Nintendo 3DS smuggled off a Chinese assembly line

honestly it's not really outrageously ugly. the price and games will be the real answer

$300 but no Paper Mario in launch window (first 3 months) = no buy at launch
$300 but Paper Mario in launch window (first 3 months) = buy

rest of launch window looks lame so that's the answer for me. I got it pre-ordered just in case.

the thing could honestly be shaped like a dildo and if it had Paper Mario 3DS I would buy it on day one and gleefully skip my ass home to play it all day and all night until I beat it thirty times

the only thing I can think of for the 3DS design is the top lid is now easier and faster to open since it has that over hanging edge

the orange and purple are both really really nice to me
 
It is quite ugly but I don't really think I care. It matters about the games more than anything else and I don't even know if I want one yet because I don't know what the games are.

I am hopeful that it's the system stats (like on the Nintendo Channel on Wii), letting you see the most popular games of the moment, etc.

You'd still have to push-grip the the bottom part.

If it had a small bit to the side where only the upper lip is exposed and only the bottom lip is exposed, that'd work I think.

It would work fine.

I was thinking that sliders, et al, along the side are harder to accidentally change while in one's pocket. This would be more helpful if the power control was on the side, though.
 
God, as much as want it, I have to admit that it is a rather ugly design.

The awkward power button placement, the weird double bezel of the lower screen, the white-for-no-good-reason analog nub, etc

it's a train wreck of a design...

Too bulky? In the comparison shots it looks like it's not even bigger than a DS Lite.

People keep talking about revisions, but I'm left wondering what's actually going to warrant a revision of the current design. I know it's silly to say that Nintendo won't eventually put out another model, but considering the tech and the comparison shots, the 3DS looks to be a more advanced DS but in a similar package to its predecessors. Its design is already looking way tighter for a launch system than the original DS Phat. What more will Nintendo be able to do?
 
The only thing I have to say about size and appearance is this: the GBA, GameCube, SP, and Wii all amazed me with their tiny size. Then I opened up my DS Fat box in 2004 and had the opposite feeling: that I was looking at a hunk of granite with tiny square fogged portholes carved into it.

I can see how it looks a bit bulkier in those photos, but dimensions don't lie - it's actually about 3% smaller than the Lite, and less than half an ounce heavier. This is also why I think that much of GAF is exaggerating the likelihood of a primarily-aesthetic redesign like the Lite and GBA SP; if there is a full-fledged, branded redesign, I suspect it'll be closer to DSi in the addition of new features and the timing of its release.

The original DS always seemed like a prototype rushed to market in a "Sony entering the market" induced panic.
 
The DS Phat wasn't completely awful, but the DS Lite is what I consider just about the perfect revision. It eliminated pretty much every issue of the Phat's design. Smaller, sleeker, more uniform in shape, better screen, bigger stylus. The loss of clicky buttons is the only issue, really.

I don't think we'll see any change on that level with the 3DS, which is why I feel people are a bit hasty when concluding that they should wait for a revision.
 
It looks nice.
Since PSP2 has dual analog I will go with that format.
Nintendo never cares to have the most powerful hardware, I am betting the next PSP will be a beast!
Although the 3-D does pique my interest, I may at some point buy a 3DS....

I like more the black column for the screens in the DSProto. Buttons and pad look better in the Phat, although.

edit: do we have images of a closed DS Prototype?

Damn. I really want that shit whittled out of gaming entirely, never mind just on handhelds. Thank the gods that Nintendo is continuing to not use a dual-analog design.

I haven't any issues with Nintendo deciding to not use the dual-analog design, but I'm curious why you think it's so horrible...

I just enjoy it when games find other ways to control. Using the left stick to move and the right one to look just never clicked with me. I'd hate to use that kind of scheme with, for example, 3D platformers. Not to mention that I'm one of those people who prefers the first-person controls of the Metroid Prime games more than any other console shooter-types, and the third-person controls of RE4 over anything else. Maybe I'm just weird that way.

I will say that including a right stick merely for optional purposes may not have been a bad choice, but then again, I have no issue with devs being forced to think outside the box by Nintendo's exclusion of a second stick altogether. Control limitations are but one of the only aspects keeping handheld hardware enhancements from taking handhelds too far into the console realm.

Yeah sucks no second analog. Fans of factually superior control can't help but be disappointed.

That said, the 3DS has Paper Mario, and I'm sure that won't really need a second analog stick, so at least that's a positive.

Gonna suck ass in Metal Gear Solid. Best thing about MGS3 was when they finally got full camera control. Stylus camera control is always gonna be inferior, as is L+R camera control.
 
I know people have the whole redesign thing going but I dont understand that arguement. 99.9% chance when a redesign comes out Gamestop and others will let you trade it in with like $50-$70 cash for the remodel.

I know all I had to do was give them my DSL+40 bucks to get a DSi.
 
have one on reserve at gamestop, still not sure if I want it or not, but better safe then sorry I guess. It is ugly, not as ugly as phat DS, but still ugly, and there are zero games I'm interested in but I know I will get one down the road, guess it's really a matter of price

MGS3:S and the introduction to a fully 3D camera was AMAZING.

The thing is, devs are practiced and skilled with implementing camera control to the right stick. They are used to building games that feature that setup. Why would any hardware manufacturer want developers to not use the full talent they have with particular types of games or controls?

You make good points there about those games. Those games never suffered from not having a fully controllable camera.

So Paper Mario is definately coming out this year right? So you're getting one this year most probably. So at the end you get 2 scenarios if it isn't a launch game, either wait up on 3DS for 3+ months, and continue to happily game on the other systems and wait for a few deals on old games, or just get a 3DS at launch and play the other games, which are no Paper Mario should be good fun. That and new hardware.

I'd rather just drool over my new portable system, even though it's ugly as sin.
 
I'd rather have a really good automatic camera than have to switch my right hand between the action buttons and the camera controls.

It's probably too much to hope that developers will take the lack of a camera stick as a reason to develop reasonable cameras.

There's a billion incredible games coming out this year, 3DS is like small potatoes compared to the games I want. On the priority list it's all Paper Mario 3DS.

So if I don't get it at launch, I won't feel like I'm missing much. There's like eleventy billion games coming I will be in process playing. The launch window lineup looks really unappealing outside of Paper Mario 3DS for me.

It's just another in the retarded "OMG FORCE DEVELOPERS INTO LIMITATIONS BREEDS INNOVATION" garbage screeched by certain subsets of gamers. It's bullshit. If a developer doesn't want to use the second analog, they don't have to. Plenty of Ps2 games don't. If a developer wants to, they can.

And the second problem is second analog is NOT merely for camera control. Various PS2, PS3 and 360 games use it in integral fashions that dramatically enhance the quality of the control and gameplay.

Don't drop superior control methods because you want to pigeonhole developers into some warped shackled environment.

My bet is that the prevalent use of 3D effects will mean that devs will use more fixed cameras to control how the player experiences the effect. there will be shots that are composed and not controllable to make the effect more impressive and wowing.

this could, of course, be to the detriment of actual gameplay if a controllable camera would make movement easier.
