Nintendo: A Sad Story (bizarre animated short)

He's an artist in the games industry. A good one at that, and a funny guy.
He may work in the game industry but going by his Twitter and this animation his criticisims and commentaries are sophomoric at best. If he wants to rip on the industry (and we all know there's plenty of material) that's great but it doesn't appear he has the wit to do so.

There are only two ways to view this:

If he's trying to be funny or witty he failed.
If he's trying to be serious he super-mega-ultra failed.

Watched the first 38 seconds and I think I'm going to shut it down here. I kind of want to know what happens if I watch this shit while I'm high.

Can't be good...

You're completely missing the point and taking it far too seriously. The joke is that a mental, rabid "Nintendo has killed gaming" fanboy went off the rails made it while working at Lionhead. It's part of the PeterMolyneux2 pastiche that one guy is making for a laugh. That's it. It's not a special statement on the industry as a whole, just lightly ripping on Peter Molyneux.

Has there ever really been a hole in a game? So far we've had 2D/3D representations of holes but have we actually had a PHYSICAL hole?

Would love to make a platformer where you play as a thing with a microwave for a head. You have to grab enemies, put them in your head. Etc

What if LOVE was a character?

And if you don't find the Twitter feed funny, I think you need a humour transplant.

No I'm not. What you're not getting is that's exactly why I called the guy a poor conceptual artist/street performer. This whole act is a long drawn out joke without a punchline. The act is only funny if it's 100% serious and it clearly isn't.

Are those quotes from the twitter feed? Because I think I need a humour transplant then. :\

# Is it possible to make a racing game with emotion? No. Is it possible to make a emotional driving section of a game? absolutely.

# Has pacman REALLY evolved? Can't play it without wondering who the ghosts are and why they are after him. Would love to make a prequel.

this is more upsettingly accurate than funny. :[

Seriously, am I the only one who thinks this is awesome?

And what's up with you "I don't get it" guys? It's not THAT hard to understand - Wii (and all that came with it) in a way killed Mario (aka traditional gameplay) and Miyamoto (as a former believer of all this casual gaming stuff, but at the end seeing the "truth").
Who's behind the Reggie Mask? Seriously?

But even that interpretation doesn't make sense. Wii and DS revived the traditional Mario gameplay that had been missing since the N64-era. The only time Mario has been more popular than now is during the 80s.

Funny that they use Mario as the victim here, if anything there have been more Mario games than ever, with 2 Mario Galaxies, NSMBWii, and the whole 25th anniversary thing this year.

That's the point of the video. Mario is being used to satiate any criticisms that nintendo has killed the core gamer. He's a prostitute. A two-bit whore for Nintendo that they have elected to use, abuse, and make filthy with their non-gaming taint. But when they get criticized for the direction that they are leading the industry, they can point to the abused Mario half-corpse in the closet and say, 'Look! Look what we have given you! Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained!'

Yes Nintendo doesn't give a crap about traditional gameplay anymore.

They've only:

Released 3 mainline Mario games on the console
Resurrected 2D side scrollers (NSMBW, Wario Shake It!, DKCR, KEY)
Greenlighted one of their most shitty selling cult games (S&P)
Started a digital download service just for downloading classics of past generations
Two Metroid games
Is creating a revolutionary handheld with a God-tier 1st party lineup

And they've somehow "abandoned" tradtional gameplay and their fanbase?

He's exactly right, that's what I got from the video as well.
then what about the rest of the list warz? Nintendo has outputted much more core games on Wii than it did on GC.

I mean, I get that's the whole point of the video and that's why it feels off to me.

I'm not commenting on the Wii as a system, but rather the message of the short.

That's pretty much what it was saying.

As for the Wii, regardless of how the Wii's library is finally seen, I think the whole gamut of casual motion-controlled gaming will be looked back on as insubstantial.

I do however enjoy plenty of Wii games.

did nintendo ever focus on hardcore gamers though ?

i think they focused on kids before and now they are focusing on kids and soccermoms and elder people

Nintendo just made games that ran a decent range. They always lacked in the RPG department however. They never made "Bro" or "dude bro" games however. Not many others did either until GTA3 hit I think. It's the "bro" games that people seem to associate with "hardcore" these days and anything not made in that mold is for casuals or non-gamers. This generation Nintendo has only made a handful of games that could be considered primarily targeting the non-gamer. Everything else they've made/published (which seems to be ignored by people in order to further the belief that Nintendo has abandoned their core audience) has been their usual game making that is comparable to all their outings on their various systems.

Oh yeah, I realize that's the point of the video. But it feels wrong to me because that's not actually true, regardless of the marketing blitz from NOA. And even the second part of his post doesn't really make sense because Miyamoto kinda gets redemption at the end by saving a half beaten to death Mario, where they've been kinder to Mario and all of their mascots during this generation apart from the NES era.

Don't know. Wasn't totally sure what the actual term was. I've heard both used.
yeah, i guess you should check your oxford colloquialism encyclopedia to make sure that your facetiousness is termed properly according to the academic experts in the field before being sardonic on a video game internet forum next time

Did the reggie-thing service undead mario a blow job at 4.00? Is it a viral video hinting to Epic Mario for 3DS by Warren Spector? or Silicon Knight coming back on board?
So many questions better left unanswered...
It looked like it at first, but Reggie mask guy was using the glove from Mario 64 to stretch and disfigure Mario's face.

This could be:

1. A guy crying desperately for attention
2. A troll
3. A stupid Nintendo fanboy in despair for not having the console he would like to have with 1080p Marios/Zeldas/Metroids/StarFoxes and nothing else
4. A sick bastard
5. A Sega fanboy that misses the 90s era
6. All of the above together...

Strange as it sounds... I'm going with the 6th option :lol

I find it kind of ironic that the video used music from Mario Galaxy.

Nailed it, and thought the same thing

Sounds like Sonic, except much more successful

Why should any company want to appease "hardcore gamers"? They're all a bunch of whiney bitches. :V

I think third parties are at fault not Nintendo. Nintendo genre games sell like hot cakes, it is the dull crappy ports/no effect third party titles that suck. Remember Nintendo wasn't just great cause of Mario. My "Nintendo" experience is remembered by not only Nintendo genres but Capcom's Sqaure's, Konmai's and others.

Disagree

Nintendo understands that not all gamers have hours upon hours to play games. They have read the market exceptionally well.

The Wii is a great console for those in their mid-late 20s who, due to increasing work commitments, prefer 'pick up and play' titles.

There is a reason Mario Kart Wii and NSMB Wii have sold like crazy.

My friendship group is composed of young professionals aged 23-27 many of which enjoy having a console they can play with partners, friends and also in small bursts.
This is my situation (although late-20s here). I have a PS3 but I haven't played it since running through the new Castlevania once. I prefer the quicker and more immediate experiences like DKCR or Wii Sports Resort.

I don't have sound on since im at work but I like this video. I like how Mario is all worn and beaten because nintendo milks the shit out of him.

I could understand the "Mario is being milked" thing, like, last generation. They milked the shit out of him with the Gamecube.

Nowadays, he's been in two of the highest rated games of the last five years and two games that combined sold, what, 25 million copies?

Is this a scenario where people are only now complaining about Mario being "milked" (as if a corporate mascot is supposed to have dignity beyond selling things) because they feel betrayed by Nintendo for not specifically catering their cartoon plumber games toward them?

I find it hilarious how people think that Nintendo abandoned hardcore gaming with Wii. I use to put out a comparson between GCN and Wii. Guess what?

NINTENDO GAVE US THE SAME GAMES THEY DID ON GAMECUBE!

They just release faster and more closely together. Gamecube would release 1-2 big games a year so people thought Nintendo focused on hardcore. Mariokart:DD came a year after Mario Sunshine whereas Mariokart Wii came out only a few after Galaxy.

People think that because Nintendo released Wii Music, Wii Sports etc.. in addition to then hardcore games, they abandoned hardcore gamers. So what if Nintendo decides to focus on promoting Wii Fit and Wii Music more than Smash Bros.? Hardcore gamers know what Smash is and don't need a commercial to buy it but casual gamers may not know what Wii Music is and won't find out by visiting a game website.

The only games I see Nintendo has not given us this generation as they did on GCN is Starfox and Pikmin but Nintendo has given us:

Donkey Kong Country Return
A third person Metroid
A sequel to a Mario platformer
Punch Out!
Sin and Punishment 2(This is from Treasure who is not known for making sequels.)
A second Zelda(You can argue TP was released for Wii launch)
Excite Truck

Sorry for the rant but this Nintendo abandoned hardcore gamers whining tick me off for people's lack of thinking.
