Nintendo and Panasonic join forces to improve game interaction.

From reading up on the site... I believe a lot of this tech could be used already in future 3DS/Wii U software (as they already have front-facing cameras/mics built-in).

No need for a Kinect-like device.

People seem to forget that the Wii U can do video chat. The Wii U gamepad has a built in camera and mic which are suppose to be of a decent quality. I believe it was said they in theory had the tech (in addition to maybe using the Wii remote and sensor bar) already to pull of what is being done with Kinect and possibly even the Oculus Rift as well. Kinect possibly being the easier one to pull off since you'd have to mount the gamepad to do what OR is doing. It would possibly come down to the proper software which is what it seems this new deal could likely address.

Why would it need dual OS tor movie playback?

because that's how Q worked at the time.

I suppose there are complications to implementing Blu-ray playback into an existing OS that does not pay the license.

anyways, nothing on the hardware front to expect from this deal.

I'm still hopeful one day, Nintendo & Panasonic will venture together in the broader tech business. I'm postive Nintendo could use its gaming knowledge in non game-centric products. a little miiverse in cameras, a little spotpass in phones etc...

Exactly. They may not have entire teams dedicated to the console, but you can be sure there's already a bunch of engineers already working on it.

I was always under the impression that, at least with Nintendo/Sony, the next console is always in the works.

yes.

it's probable Nintendo thinks NUI is a mature enough/cheap tech to be implemented.
Nintendo has history with implementing stuff once it has reached pervasiveness in other products.

they bought the rights to patents and can influence NUX researches to fit their goals.

Interesting, if you could have your iPhone/Android or whatever mobile device communicate with your console. Like simple shit to start, taking pics of people creates Miis instantly transferred to the verse. Or even a photo album that you share with friends over the same community. Or, seeing as mobile devices use gps there could be an app for Miiverse that shows your location to other friends/Miis on a globe or map, completely scalable and on your console. And like Facebook, those Miis could have connections to others you may know...I'm sure there better ideas, I just thought you had an interesting point.

Whatever they do, at least you can rest assured that it will work properly. Nintendo doesn't fuck around with input. DS and 3DS touchscreens have better response time than an iphone 5. They've pretty much always stressed superior control in their input schemes.

Nintendo's been making games that utilize mic and camera inputs for a while now (continued into the 3DS platform), so this makes sense.

Gamecube didn't have a full featured OS capable of supporting multiple applications though. If Panasonic made a movie playing variant of Wii or Wii U, I'd expect the DVD/BRD player to be just another channel in the regular OS menu. Maybe even the same as the Game Disc channel.

I know they're not gonna make a console whatsoever, but if they ever did, they could call it the Fun Unit Q... aka Fu-Q.

Ha ha ha ha, y so funny?!....

Anyway, I think we're probably never get to anything from this collaboration, not directly (it'll be behind-the-scenes stuff we'll learn about several weeks/months later).

PUX is a software company developing tools and middleware for voice and image recognition. Both Wii U and 3DS have cameras and microphones, so this isn't necessarily about future platforms.

... do people NOT realise the CD-i was from Phillips, not Panasonic?

Nintendo looking ahead to the after Wii U?

Of course they are, just like they're already looking ahead to the after 3DS. Even if they weren't, that doesn't mean the Nitnendo engineers just sit in their office all day without doing anything. They're always researching stuff, not even necessarily for their next console(s).

Technically pretty much all the major players doing speech recognition do all the heavy lifting on remote servers. I doubt that this will be different.

The ones that don't, require training that is kind of the opposite of easy to use/set up.

Siliconera wrote something about this news, with a bit more information about PUX itself :

PUX is a software development kit used in Nintendo games like Brain Age. The package includes a set of video codecs to encode movies, 2D to 3D conversion software, and various recognition tools for speech, handwriting, face, objects, and gestures. Brain Age used speech recognition and the kanji recognition tools.

The M2 is back!....as M2 tech was cutting edge at the time, it'd be great if Nintendo and Panasonic combined to create another M2 like machine, but this time it actually gets released...

Then the Wii U can be cast-aside...
