Nintendo broke my heart, how about you?

Icanplaythat said:
For over 20 years I played and owned Nintendo games and consoles. The NES and SNES where my exclusive machines in their respective generations. The PC, PS1 and Saturn were played more, but the N64 was still there, just as beloved as its predecessors. Then came the vastly underrated GameCube; as my interest in JRPG's dissipated and most other games on the Xbox and PS2 were available on the PC, the only thing keeping me invested in the console market was Nintendo. Sure I had an Xbox, but it was a dedicated Halo/Madden player. Sure I had a PS2, but I lost interest in the way Japanese games were being designed and the only game I ever completed on the platform was GTA III. The only thing that kept me from playing games exclusively on my PC was Nintendo.

The first time I saw the Wii demonstrated my heart sank, I was shocked at the positive response some people had. How this garbage was/is lauded as a revolution/evolution of games is still mystifying to me. I still had hope that "regular" control methods would be included in Wii games; after all, it has GameCube controller ports. Alas, most games are waggle only. :(

Sometime in 2008, my brother took a trip to the west coast and he lent me his Wii. I intended to spend 2 weeks trying to play some games and understand why people were digging this. I played Metroid Prime 3, Zelda:TP, Mario Galaxy, No More Heroes and De Blob. Holy shit was that controller a nightmare, I came to know it as the grand ruiner of games. I never felt the pointer was in the right place in any game, the waggling in Zelda broke my spirit. My 2 week mission turned into a 3 day depression session. I packed it up and dropped it off a couple of days later at my brothers apartment as I was checking his mail.

So I have no consoles, only a PC; I might buy a PS3, but that would only be to play Madden with my brother. Has anyone else turned away from consoles as a result of Nintendo's waggle revolution? Did Nintendo break Your heart?

Postscript: I know many of you feel differently, feeling vindicated and whole when able to play games with people who never "got it" before. Elated at the idea of being able to play video games with your mom and dad. Meeting and having relations with a person you meet at a "Wii party". I acknowledge those people exist and I say good for you, but that doesn't change the fact that I hate the Wii and it prevents me from playing Nintendo games.

EDIT: Alright, I'm probably being melodramatic by saying "Nintendo broke my heart", but you get what I'm saying.
The Wii is by far my least favorite system they've put out. The only game's I've played that truly benefited from the controller were Wii Sports and Resident Evil 4. It can be argued about FPS's, but for every other game, it felt like a gimmick. It's sad, that graphics and the controls have ruined so many games for me with what's been their most successful system in years. There are a few games (Mario) that are still playable for me, but most are not. I'm glad they're going back to a somewhat traditional controller for the Wii U, but I'd still just like a GC or classic controller with out the screen.

I will say this about the Wii remote and nun chuck set-up. It would be perfect for VR games using a helmet or head tracking. There was an arcade game I played (picture linked below) that had a similar set-up. It worked really well for it, but unfortunately we don't have that.

Why not support multiple controls schemes? I can play games on my PC with anything that has buttons and a USB port. PS3 supports KB and mouse, the Wii has several USB ports. How much time would have been consumed adding MP2 controls to MP3? For god sake, there are conventional controls for TP already, they just chose to exclude them from the Wii version.

It's pretty sad that even lazy ass Sega was supporting multiple control options, yet I can't get a no waggle setup for Galaxy, Prime 3, NSMBWii, DKCR, etc. Hopefully that nonsense won't continue with the Wii U.

Don't you remember he had a fixed avatar about having revenge and that Nintendo could have their "victory" for now, and a link in his tag pointing to Mother 3 being the top seller of the week, outselling WKC I think.

He was also banned for any sales age topic for a few years. I wonder why that stopped.

Seriously, the only heartbreak with Nintendo I had so far is that the 3DS is region locked. I... I need imports to Europe for my handheld :-(
Sure, was not interested in the Wii but okay, it certainly did Nintendo good.

...I'm not really contributing, am I?

Just going by the thread title, I thought this thread was going to be about how Nintendo doesn't localize stuff, which is really the only legitimate thing anyone could say Nintendo did that broke their heart.

We all know that SEGA does what ....

I like how you are dismissing people because you don't agree with them =P

As for me the Wii has been my favorite console this generation because it had by far the highest number of games I wanted to play that I couldn't also play on my PC (yes, Dolphin, har har). Remove the multiplats and the Wii has arguably the best exclusive lineup of the three. (although the PS3 is certainly no slouch)

A late quote here, but yes, this as well.

I agree with the OP mostly. I used to love Nintendo and be the number 1 fan, but nowadays I'm afraid they are moving a direction I'm unwilling to follow on their home console, despite how much I like their first party titles :(

I've had a Wii since launch and I only own 5 disk based games for it. I only keep the Wii around for Virtual Console stuff.

Wish I could play Metroid Prime 3 from the comfort of my desk like I do with other console games. Didn't care for the pointer controls in that game either. I just really dislike that you basically need a living room to play Wii.

Nintendo barely tries to appeal to hardcore gamers. Sure, they have AAA first party games once in a while, but I would enjoy these so much more if they had traditional controls and were in HD.

While I don't tire of the Nintendo main IP collection because every iteration of them has been good or had good things going for them at their time, I do agree that Nintendo needs new IPs with Mario/Zelda/Metroid levels of care and thought put into them badly. I wanna be surprised by them again both by virtue of the content these new IPs could bring but also by the "wow, Nintendo's in beast mode/getting bolder" effect something like that would bring.
I think this is also an interesting problem that most of the times it's disregarded with either cynism or extreme aprehension.

Nintendo created new IP's that went well with the established gaming concept they were going for. You're not gonna put Samus in a fast octane futuristic racer because there's no chemistry between the IP's, just as you're not putting Captain Falcon to go kill Andross and fly through space. So they just quickly amassed a good number of IP's that have good brand value that can be used for specific genres. Now games require more people and time involved so it's a slower period of dev time. So with finite resources you can only pick so many ideas and IP's. Action Adventure games sell and are enjoyed, so Zelda is a natural pick to go along with it. Some people feel alienated because it's "just another Zelda", which is fine I guess. But they also churn out many new low profile IP's, especially on handhelds. So it's just a tricky rope to balance through. Give up Zelda and try to create a new ip that in the end will be harder to market?

I got a DS for New Super Mario Bros., and then became my favorite system of all time as it revitalized my interest in video games.
I got a Wii for Wii Sports, and I got back into first person shooters because of the controls, and the VC has been a godsend because I could play classic games on the SNES and N64 which I never owned because they were too expensive.

I've been happier with Nintendo systems this generation compared to the past.

For the tenth fucking time; I want to play the games, but am prohibited by my distaste for the controls/console. I want to play the games, but am prohibited by my distaste for the controls/console. I don't get the whole thing about nintendo not using traditional controllers. Nintendo's controllers have always been weird. Sure they weren't all motion controls and were generally closer to traditional controls, but ever since the N64 era their controllers have been awkward looking, yet surprisingly comfortable. The c-stick? What was up with that?

I liked the Wiimote. I thought some of the waggle stuff was lazily tacked on, but it never bothered me that much. I could still play the games I wanted to regardless of a new control method. And there were/are still games I want to play on the Wii. I didn't get my heart broken, but I do shake my head a bit when I see baffling choices or weird statements they make. As long as the games are there, I'll be there. I'm sort of a whore.

Edit: Ignore my statement OP. I think everything that's been said can be said. You didn't like the control method. That's understandable. Other people have said what I feel much better than I could express.

I play Wii games from like 3 feet away, including MP3...
You don't need an entire room.

Also, define "hardcore gamers" please.

Shaking the Wii Remote for garlic was awesome. And swinging on vines...if you felt it wasn't good, you could've simply used the digipad!?

Sorry meant the stick swinging, not vines. I played the game last year, and I usually forget about most games fast.

Shiggy said:
Don't understand what's people's problem here. Pressing another button for spinning would've felt awkward, simply swinging felt absolutely natural and intuitive. It never caused any problem.

Didn't cause any problem, just would have preferred a button. That's all.

Yea. I never got why people thought you need a whole living room to play MP3. As long as you know where the bar is you can sit where ever you want.

If you don't live in Europe or Japan Nintendo hasn't done anything worthwhile in the console 'core' market since Donkey Kong Country: Returns. The gap between DK and Zelda is 12 months and I can't think of anything that launched in between that scored higher than say a 7 on metacritic or gamerankings or whatever and that's pretty sad.

It's true, I put up with the shitty 360 d-pad when I played DOA4 and the famous hand cramps never made me stop playing certain DS games either.

Did you ever seriously try to play SMG or Resident Evil 4 Wii or MP3? You are one of the first people I see on GAF who would've preferred classic control options for these titles after playing through these games. Of course, it might be awkward at first, but it takes some time to get accustomed to new controllers. It's no surprise that many gamers are disappointed that Nintendo took out the pointer in the WiiU controller.

This thread... I just can't.

I couldn't imagine limiting myself like that and not playing Mario Galaxy... or what is the best RPG of this generation, Xenoblade.

3 games (+1 in the future) validates your 250$ purchase?

For myself the wii is my most unused console (and yes I do have friends who can come over and play splitscreen). I agree that the Mario Galaxies are great - as is most of Nintendo's installments on the system - but it's really not enough compared to the offerings of the other two. I don't even mind the sub-hd graphics (although Monster Hunter Tri / Xenoblade on Dolphin are glorious).

I'm definitely going to hold off on the WiiU until its for sure that the online isnt shit and that it's going to get quality support across the board.
I left quite a few out, but yeah, that's kind of the point of a killer app. The games mentioned were good enough that I don't regret my purchase at all.

No, mostly because I'm not getting such an emotional attachment to a certain company or a franchise. If it's not for me anymore then I don't care.

This happened with Star Wars for example. I don't cry on message boards and imagine that George Lucas rapes a stormtrooper. I just loose interest.

Nintendo did some shit decisions with the Wii.
They had shit decisions with the Gamecube, too one could argue, but i was younger, the console had current-gen graphics for its time and i could play with the Gamecube alone for years.

With the Wii, the way online gaming had evolved and the way Nintendo didn't give a shit, etc. left me a little sad.

I'm all for quality instead of quantity, but there were some third-party games on the HD consoles i absolutely didn't want to miss, and the Wii simply couldn't have them.

I don't know if the Wii U will fix this, i don't think so.

I think Iwata's Nintendo did a lot of things wrong, but also made some awesome decisions with EAD Tokyo.
Everyone is always "Mario Galaxy, dude".
That's because the game saved the fucking system for long-time fans. that and games like DKCR.

Also: the Nintendo DS. basically, the best system ever.
Do i think the 3DS will be as great? absolutely not, but the DS isn't old yet, so my heart is not "broken" when i have, right here, such a fantastic console.

The problem with Nintendo is the future: i want to see an up-to-date console from them.
The Wii U... not sure it's going to be it, graphics-wise. and the pad? single-touch? bad idea.

Basically i was a Nintendo fanboy as a kid, so i had the emotional attachment thing... i still am a fan and the current gen (by that i still mean Wii-DS) had me thinking... they are so much better than everyone else in some things, but they hardware staff is not.

Also, i have a precise way of thinking about graphics and consoles: i think portable gaming doesn't need PC-quality graphics.
The DS was perfect. 3DS may even be a little too powerful.

But i do think you NEED a great hardware when it's about home consoles.

The Wiimote? when it works, it works (Mario Galaxy, etc.)
But many times, in many games, it doesn't. it's time to move one. the idea behind the Wii U giga-pad is much better.

I was really hoping this was a thread about Nintendo's love hotels, but alas it's just another "console isn't for me" and followed by ignoring any IPs Nintendo actually has made other then the main three and sometimes Miis. Poor poor Captain Rainbow and all the rest.

One company will never decide how I feel about a medium as a whole. Nintendo is just a company to me, not a childhood friend I caught taking drugs and throwing his life away by joining a punk rock band as their drummer. I'm not in your situation Icanplaythat. I have many games across multiple platforms that are not on PC and I'm enjoying them quite a lot. Nothing "Wii Party" style or whatever that means, just games I would enjoy normally by myself or with friends. I'm not stuck in the position of "well if that goes, I have nothing left". Yes, that even includes Wii titles I've yet to pick up or coming out.

I'm sorry you can't enjoy the games, but even if you just have PC only now for your outlet, that's okay. Video games are just for fun and as long as you still enjoy yourself in this hobby of toys, I just don't see anything wrong. Plus who knows? Perhaps in a few years your taste will change and you will find titles on systems you do want or Nintendo uses a control system you are comfortable with.

Also remember, every game you have ever played isn't a real game. It's a fake game. It doesn't exist. It's all in your mind. Real games never existed, ever! So enjoy those non-existent games on whatever gaming platform you use.

I got to the ice boss? in MP3, not sure how far that is, and quit out of disgust for the controls. I didn't like RE4 on the GameCube, so didn't bother on the Wii.

To be honest about Mario, I might be burnt out on it. Those games are so inconsequential and lacking in tension and excitement.

But MP3 and TP I wanted to play, definitely and absolutely.

As I've gotten older I've kinda shyed away from single player games. Pretty much just play 1 competitive multiplayer game at a time. That being said I'll always play Nintendo stuff and I can't wait for the new Zelda game. Pretty sure no matter how old I become I'll always come back for Zelda and Mario.

and whatever the Team Ico guys make

You'll always find something to hate about the thing you love. That said, no I don't hate Nintendo, they just make some stupid decisions like every other company, but when it's a company as great as Nintendo (and they've shown us this time and time again) it can be a bit hard to accept sometimes.

As far as I'm concerned they seem to be continuing making games like no other company can and that's worth a lot. I just wish there would be more unity. That is; great games deserve to be available to everyone, not some.
