Nintendo broke my heart, how about you?

If I were you, I'd just let it go.

£90 trade in for 3DS.

Batman will cost me £28. Same for Zelda. And then I have money left over. You were saying?
Well I guess you've thought this out all the way through...:)

I'm okay with a bigger battery honestly. I would, however, like a model without 3D. I can't see the 3D effects, so it's bumping up the cost of the system, then it's just a waste of my money. :\
With Nintendo said to now be selling them at a loss, 3D has no effect on YOUR cost.

So, give the Wii/DS/etc. a try again with a more open mind. Try games with "traditional controller methods"; or just buy a PS3 an enjoy more things other than Madden. Uncharted, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet...and so on.

I'd actually like to try Red Dead Redemption, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

I'm with you OP. I'm still mad over the Mortal Kombat blood thing. I used to envy my friend's Super Nintendo and while I was happy with the Genesis, the grass was always greener, until the grey blood fiasco. Sega Genesis had real blood, and then they gave us the Championship Edition of Street Fighter 2? After that all SNES had was Mario and some RPGs I couldn't afford anyway, so I never looked back. I was in awe of the N64 in college when I was a PSX'r, but I was disappointed with the Gamecube and the Wii, just cemented it. Nintendo used to be fierce. Now they're just contenders, and it's all their fault. They used to be cutting edge, but they got out of the fight, and now they're just happy.

(Nintendo has always owned the portable market though. Although Sony's offerings were alright too.)

Not gonna happen, and would probably only save, like, $10 MAYBE.

Yeah, I know. Guess it gives me something to show off whenever I let other people try out the system tho.

It was kinda depressing passing on the 3DS, but $250 and I can't use it's primary feature is just... :\

Psst. It's $170 now.

Yeah gaming hasn't been the same for me ever since Nintendo's direction changed to a more casual-oriented approach. I demarcate this time period as beginning with the very first Mii creation. Or basically ever since Iwata was given a fresh generation to implement his vision for the company.

People tell me on here I can just quit bitching about Nintendo and give my gaming dollars to to other companies and be totally fine, there's no need to harp on Nintendo. But honestly, the Nintendo magic had always been one of the premier reasons to play games. I've never quite enjoyed anything as much a romp through the castle courtyard of Mario 64, or the feeling of opening a treasure chest in Ocarina of Time, or the amazing symbiosis that Nintendo once had with Rare during the SNES/N64 days.

I'd give anything for a new leader at Nintendo, with a fresh new vision. I had a blast with bowling in Wii Sports, but that was just about it.

Seeing as this has been one of the better gens for NoE I'd say they have actually gone in the direction of mending my heart.

For over 20 years I played and owned Nintendo games and consoles. The NES and SNES where my exclusive machines in their respective generations. The PC, PS1 and Saturn were played more, but the N64 was still there, just as beloved as its predecessors. Then came the vastly underrated GameCube; as my interest in JRPG's dissipated and most other games on the Xbox and PS2 were available on the PC, the only thing keeping me invested in the console market was Nintendo. Sure I had an Xbox, but it was a dedicated Halo/Madden player. Sure I had a PS2, but I lost interest in the way Japanese games were being designed and the only game I ever completed on the platform was GTA III. The only thing that kept me from playing games exclusively on my PC was Nintendo.

The first time I saw the Wii demonstrated my heart sank, I was shocked at the positive response some people had. How this garbage was/is lauded as a revolution/evolution of games is still mystifying to me. I still had hope that "regular" control methods would be included in Wii games; after all, it has GameCube controller ports. Alas, most games are waggle only. :(

Sometime in 2008, my brother took a trip to the west coast and he lent me his Wii. I intended to spend 2 weeks trying to play some games and understand why people were digging this. I played Metroid Prime 3, Zelda:TP, Mario Galaxy, No More Heroes and De Blob. Holy shit was that controller a nightmare, I came to know it as the grand ruiner of games. I never felt the pointer was in the right place in any game, the waggling in Zelda broke my spirit. My 2 week mission turned into a 3 day depression session. I packed it up and dropped it off a couple of days later at my brothers apartment as I was checking his mail.

So I have no consoles, only a PC; I might buy a PS3, but that would only be to play Madden with my brother. Has anyone else turned away from consoles as a result of Nintendo's waggle revolution? Did Nintendo break Your heart?

Postscript: I know many of you feel differently, feeling vindicated and whole when able to play games with people who never "got it" before. Elated at the idea of being able to play video games with your mom and dad. Meeting and having relations with a person you meet at a "Wii party". I acknowledge those people exist and I say good for you, but that doesn't change the fact that I hate the Wii and it prevents me from playing Nintendo games.

EDIT: Alright, I'm probably being melodramatic by saying "Nintendo broke my heart", but you get what I'm saying.

Yep. They sold out as far as I am concerned with the Wii. What a crappy system. Worst purchase I've ever done.>:(

Twillight Princess: Most dissapointing high profile game ever.

Oddly enough, that casual oriented approach has brought me some good memories of playing Wii Sports and Mario Kart with family and friends on the holidays. And the memories of Twilight Princess the first time are amazing as well, even if the final game did leave a bitter taste in my mouth.

Not on the Gamecube. Love it on that, but can't stand the wii controls. Skyward Sword will be great though, as it's developed for the Wii.

Yeah, there are options..Forget if you find that Nintendo no longer has stuff you're interested, then move on and have fun. There are plenty of options. Maybe next year you'll be interested again in Nintendo and the Wii U; so just keep your eyes and mind open. ;)

Uh... RE5? Or Sonic 2006?

I wonder what the average age of gaf is...

as time goes by, the more it seems like people just need to get over their predisposed notions of gaming and just shut up and play. If you don't like certain games, play others.

Is it really that hard?

Nope, I am not a fan of Nintendo as a company. They have some very talented people working for them which allows them to ignore market trends like CD,dvd player, online, HD, ect. It’s basically. “Here is our system, you’ll buy it because were Nintendo.”

Also they have left Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. rotting in arcade hell. It's a slap in the face to the fans that made them big in the first place.

edit: OP get an 360 and play Banjo and Kazooie & Tooie, you won't regret it.

I don't think I lack an open mind, I'm just lamenting the fact that I can no longer play some of the franchises I dig and have enjoyed for so long. It's not like I didn't try it, I did and it was repulsing.

A lot of people expect every company to make the "perfect" video game system, but that's never going to happen. Not a single one does not have bad design choices or problems with the software library. They are all going after different designs to make the platform unique, so they're all tech and software leaders in one way or another.

Every Wii game Nintendo that put out has underwhelmed me. I honestly have more fun watching other people play than playing their games myself.

Well, if you meant "traditional DK games", the Mario vs Donkey Kong games are relatively close to that.
Heck, they released DK'94 -Game Boy- on the Virtual Console for the 3DS and a Donkey Kong Jr. -NES port- for the 3DS also; so is not like they've forgotten about it/them.

I don't think I've ever had any troubles with the Wiimote. Works pretty well for what it does. The split setup is fairly comfortable and the games I've played (mostly first-party stuff, I'll admit) have used it quite well. *shrug*

Probably said 8 or so pages ago but the answer to your question is Sin and Punishment 2 and/or Xenoblade Chronicles. Yeah maybe that does kind of say it all really...Nintendo's best output has been being a budget pool.

Even then you have to mentally block out patches of it. Super Paper Mario? Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn? Super Brawl Smash Bros? (all of those taking about 5 months to come out...I'm pleased NOE got there in the end with large volumes of text though) Last but not least Excitebots?

And I didn't even get started on WiiWare with Cave Story taking 8 months and many others never making it or the largely useless Virtual Console due to forced 50Hz crapiness.

But enough of the bad, when its been good its been more than worthwhile with Sin and Punishment 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles. Also Metroid Prime Trilogy not going out of print (but not down in price thanks to rumors to the contrary) so soon(? I've not bothered to check recently)

The funny thing is, footage from the prototype version is not only a higher framerate but has more animation frames too...

If I get what you mean...
Sorry, the NES ports are the best you'll get (and Nintendo even made a RROmhack of Donkey Kong which adds the missing stage*). Legal fall out with the subcontractor who made the arcade versions back in the 80s (basically Nintendo hacked their code to make new games without their involvement) pretty much kills releasing their early 80s arcade games as arcade version anyway. In a way you could say Nintendo does something bad, we suffer.

*-The only way to get it is by a built in game to the long out of print Red Wii...and the European version at that...

But if I didn't then sorry.

What I'm reading: "I don't want to like Nintendo games anymore."

If motion controls, most of which are either pretty small/minor or even optional, are all it took for you to go from "I love Nintendo" to "fuck Nintendo" then you aren't making an effort to care about their games.

I'm not happy with Nintendo either and I don't like motion controls, but that is a pretty miniscule part of my reasoning.

I have become increasingly disillusioned with...not video games, per se, but video gaming. I still love the products, but I think I kind of hate the hobby.

It's things like this. Things where the industry itself is not just a sport, but a narrative. You have to have your good guys and bad guys, your plot twists and your presentation. Who are the good guys? Well, the guys you like. Who are the bad guys? The guys you don't like. And when the good guys do anything, hooray. When the bad guys do anything, how terrible.

And it's...weird. Because I've been racking my brain for the last year or so to realize if my hobby has changed or if I have. Was there ever a time where not liking something was not a personal offense to oneself? Did the existence of the 3DO bother me the way that people who don't like Nintendo, or Sony, or Microsoft, or Japanese games, or American games, or whatever seem to feel? Or is it an even weirder, even deeper level of psychosis where we're only reacting this way because it's the internet and we have to scream louder and more aggressively to get anyone to pay attention to our feelings?

I came to the realization a few months back that I basically grew up with video games and my generation may be the first one where we can say that. I grew up talking about Final Fantasy VIII with longful anticipation on message boards for gaming magazines. This is the world in which I was essentially raised and I doubt I'm the only one. Where, then, did we lose the ability to like and dislike things without putting our beings in to it? Was it recent?

I don't know. I see things like the OP saying he was depressed for three days because he had to move the controller in Zelda (a design choice I didn't like, but I still got out of bed the next day) and had to get the system out of his house and I just go back to thinking about how much of a narrative the gaming community has become, where we have to exaggerate our claims and be dramatic because that's just the way the story goes. Perhaps if I weren't so used to it, I'd get the hell out.

I actually really liked the impetus behind the Wii controls, but the application has been lacking. I've been a huge Nintendo fanboy since the 64, but I just sold my Wii and entire collection last week to buy a second PS3. Skyward Sword will be the first Zelda I haven't played in 20 years.

Note: I do have a 3ds so I haven't gone Nintendo cold turkey.

Wouldn't go as far to say they broke my heart, because I was never that in love with them in the first place. But after buying a Wii on launch day and slowly realising what a waste of space the console has been on my stand...yeah, they're pretty much dead to me when it comes to the next-gen. I refuse to be suckered again. The Wii is the worst console I have ever purchased, and just out of sheer spite I am not paying any sum of money for a 3DS or Wii U.

I choose to believe that people just act this way on message boards, and when you really dig down, they don't actually care so much.

But I only chose to believe that because if I didn't, what little faith I have left in humanity would be wiped away in an instant.

Oh lord, you've done it. Here I was thinking I didn't like the controls, but in reality I love them, I simply lack the "motor skills" necessary to navigate such a fantastical setup. You sir, are the light that has led me out of the darkness; I cherish you.

Illustrates Alberto's point beautifully. There are so many games worth playing for the Wii that so many people choose to ignore due to some arbitrary objection to flicking their wrists or even sub-HD graphics. Confuses the hell out of me.

I've always loved Nintendo games, and as far as I'm concerned, they've delivered in is gen at least as much as in any other. Give me that Skyward Sword all over my face and in my pants.

He sort of has a point though. I don't really understand the basis of your opinion that Wii controls in general are simply unacceptable to you to the extent that you refuse to play excellent games. They can't possibly bother you that much.
