Nintendo Developing Doctor Who for the Wii

This article from January in the trade paper MCV mentions Doctor Who, Wii + DS:

So this is the direction they were going in, it's believable while waiting for a better source of confirmation.

The thing that makes it difficult for me to believe is the whole Wii + DS part. Nintendo doesn't usually release two versions of the same game on different platforms at the same part. I think this is what confirms the whole "3rd party licenced for Nintendo platforms" theory.

Why on earth would you people believe this?

Because a Doctor Who game by a high-profile developing house would be amazing.

To the press, 'Nintendo' games and Nintendo games are the same thing. Obviously Nintendo aren't making this, it's just going to be on 'Nintendo'.

This guy gets it. And he's a junior member!

It could be that a 3rd party developer has the license, and are in turn licensed to release it on Nintendo consoles. Thus DEAL WITH NINTENDO TO RELEASE DOCTOR WHO.
Ya, that's what I think

"The video game was quite actively developed, but it's difficult to nail as the Doctor doesn't blow things up."

I often wondered why there wasn't a videogame when I've watched the show, I always thought it would print money, but now I see why.

You wouldn't be holding down the right trigger for the whole game, only pausing to look for more ammo. It amuses me when games like Assassin's Creed are labeled repetitive. Bring back the 8 bit platformer days, anything but another shooter.

Ew.

just...

yeah. first party Nintendo Doctor Who game would be incredible.

though clearly room here for that 'insider' to be with a third party dev explaining why they chose to develop for the Wii.

still... if Nintendo understand how big a property Who is... yeah... i see this as plausible.

the sun may have made a mistake, but i doubt they're just making shit up this time. i don't know that they've ever made up shit about giant business deals before.

just don't make it look like that terrible CG animation they did on the red button set in Area 51.

I thought the art style of the CG episode was quite good it was just terribly animated, i'd be quite happy if the game used that style

Why has no-one gotten on the blower to the BBC or Nintendo before the weekend gets here to find out what this is all about?

Haha, asking Nintendo about something.
That's a good one.

When I read the title I though " well I wonder who is developing it..." then I read again and it said Nintedo and my mind short circuited for a moment.

Yeah this won't happen.

UK exclusive, just like the BBC channel? =/
Maybe Nintendo got excited with the show before after the BBC iPlayer contract. Nintendo moves are that weird.

Doctor Who Wii game IS real
by Ben Parfitt

October release scheduled with Koch handling sales and marketing in the UK, MCV understands

MCV can confirm that the Doctor Who title for the Wii rumoured to be in the works by The Sun this morning is real.
Furthermore, it will be released in the UK this October with Koch Media handling sales and marketing duties, though when asked by MCV the firm declined to comment.

The Sun reports that the game is based around new Doctor Matt Smith and will include appearances from classic villains such as the Daleks, Cybermen and Silurians.

The paper quotes an ‘insider’ as saying: “This has been in the pipeline for years. We're delighted to have finally nailed down a deal. We went with Nintendo as they have huge appeal for families and Doctor Who is very much a family brand.
“The Wii console is key for us as it's something families play together.”

The news follows MCV’s exclusive reveal in January that BBC Worldwide is working on producing an ‘array of new games’ based on the lucrative sci-fi licence.

Head of multimedia development at BBC Worldwide Dave Anderson said at the time: “We’re having a lot of interesting discussions for a variety of ideas around Doctor Who that are complementary to each rather than in competition with each other – boxed product console games, virtual worlds and other experiences.

“The deals we are looking at are in different spaces, probably looking at overlapping but different audiences and are certainly delivering a different kind of experience.”

Right, so it's pretty clear that when they say "went with Nintendo", they mean "selected the Wii and DS as platforms". It's pretty clear Nintendo actually has nothing to do with this game.

So, it sounds like it's a smaller dev that got Nintendo to publish it.
Interesting.

If Koch Media is handling "marketing and sales", Nintendo isn't publishing it :p

There's a Third Doctor serial called Doctor Who and the Silurians. Not to mention the fact that the Second Doctor once responded to being called "Doctor Who?" with a "Yes, quite right!". The different actors portraying the role have also been credited as "Doctor Who/Dr. Who" far more frequently than as "The Doctor".

Given the fact that the credits have sometimes gleefully lied about actor/character names, it's hard to take them as canon. =P The only legitimate diegetic reference to The Doctor as Doctor Who was in "The War Machines," and the BBC actually apologized post that serial for making such a rookie mistake. ;)
EDIT: Not to mention the multiple times that The Doctor has said some variation on 'no last name, just The Doctor" and one episode titled "The Doctor Dances." In-universe, he's just The Doctor.

Anyways, a Doctor Who game that worked as a combo point-and-click/Phoenix Wright argument simulator would basically be my dream come true. If it somehow were developed by Nintendo, well, it would be a dream my dream had come true.

Koch Media actually is distributing some Nintendo titles in the UK according to their website: http://www.kochmedia.co.uk/?rid=3242723631599506700115811

Not to mention this:
Furthermore, in 2006, Koch was appointed by Nintendo as its preferred distribution partner in Britain and Ireland and in 2007 was Presented the MCV Distribution Team of the Year at the Industry Excellence Awards.

Don't buy Nintendo's involvement -- sure, they've done licensed games before, but this strikes me as way too niche a license (outside the UK) for them to bother.

Well, there's Silverball Games who has a Nintendo game scheduled for 2010. They've worked on the UK-only Active Health.
