Nintendo Direct announced for September 12 (6AM PT, 9AM ET, 2PM UK)

Not sure about that bike, but Prime 4 continues to look incredible! Such a shame they refuse to remaster or even just barebones port Prime 2 and 3.

Other than that, highlights were Galaxy 2, DQ7, and Fire Emblem. Not too shabby of a direct, but could've done without all that filler.

So a bunch of amiibo and a storybook for me. Really not selling me on a Switch 2 to be honest. I'm also worried about how marriage is going to work in tomodachi life now.

I mean does anyone here not think Galaxy 3 is their big 2026 holiday title? Has to be. Especially with the movie.
They won't ever make again another Galaxy 3, they will do a brand new 3D Mario. It's like expecting Sunshine 2 or Odyssey 2 (this one would make more sense). Every Nintendo console has its own unique 3D Mario.

You say that but there's no rules at all, and Nintendo is more flexible now than ever. Galaxy 2 exists, after all. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they did a new Galaxy-themed Mario.

I thought it was an old early PS3 late PS2 remaster at first, I was very surprised to see it was actually Prime 4.

Disappointed that there is no new Monolith Soft game.
It is very disappointing but those wide open areas in Metroid Prime 4 probably mean Monolithsoft was helping on development in some part.

I'm noticing a trend that they probably been helping out on big sandbox games like the Zeldas, Bananza, design of Xenoblades of course, Mario Kart World and now Metroid.

Fire Emblem was really the only thing that interested me, and even then I'll wait to see if the story is as phoned in as Engage's was. I'm surprised how quickly they went through Metroid Prime 4

They design the console around the new 3D Mario and vice-versa. Galaxy was designed around the wiimote. Sunshine was designed around the Gamecube controller, and it's on Delfino island cause Gamecube's codename was Dolphin. Odyssey is designed around the joycons. Ubisoft made Sparks of Hope around Galaxy and then they ported (again) Galaxy and Galaxy 2, that's enough Galaxy-themed games.

I really wanted to see an update for Xenoblade 2 & 3. Would have legit put a smile on my face. We can clearly see Nintendo doesn't give a fuck about updating the performance of their Switch games, unless it is from their higher selling franchises. Metroid Dread and Xenoblade are getting hung out to dry. While Captain Toad gets a update. Crazy world.

Odyssey started as a Wii U game. What you're saying was true in the distant past but no longer that relevant. And it's certainly at the very least strongly overstating things in the modern era to say that they design the console around one game. That's certainly not true any more. The GameCube controller was also designed around the flashlight control in Luigi's Mansion, hence the c-stick. As you said, back in those days the basic design of a Mario game could influence certain aspects of a system, but we are quite far removed from that at this point.

Odyssey started as a Wii U game.

With Nintendo's lengthy "it's done when it's done" development cycles, it's easy to think that some games started life on older platforms before they migrated over into the modern era. But that's not the case for Mario Odyssey, according to its producer Yoshiaki Koizumi. Speaking to Game Informer, he explains plainly, "It was always planned for Nintendo Switch. We really were considering a lot of the hardware capabilities specifically for this game, and wanted to make the most use of them."

The Wii U had its Mario 3D already. And they started working on the Switch in early 2015

Eh. It was an OK Direct in theory, but not much for me personally.

Resident Evil Requiem arriving day and date with other versions is a great sign for long term third party support, but I'm not a huge RE fan.

The new Yoshi game looks potentially interesting, but it was not exactly a thrilling announcement to close out the Mario 40th section. The rest of the Mario 40 stuff was somehow less exciting than the 35th anniversary. Wish we at least got Mario 35 back or some kind of "available now" digital title.

Donkey Kong DLC looks cool, but that game feels complete as is. It's Mario Kart World that desperately needs an update. I'm honestly shocked that it wasn't mentioned at all.

Metroid Prime 4 looks fucking insane. No complaints there. It's even making this year (narrowly).

Third party announcements were pretty bleak, outside of RE. Final Fantasy VII getting a small delay. Presumably Elden Ring is slipping to next year too since it was a no show. No major new AAA ports from Microsoft, Ubisoft, Square, Rockstar, etc.

Closing with Fire Emblem did nothing for me, personally.

I've been happy with my Switch 2 thus far and I'm still hyped for MP4 and Air Riders, but this didn't give me much new to be excited about, and I doubt it would offer much to convert anyone who wasn't already sold on the system.

The gap in time would actually not align with this, though. But they say what they say to the press. The game was in development for a very long time. And I doubt they (EPD Tokyo) spent from November 2023 until "early 2025" not working on what eventually became Mario Odyssey. 🤷‍♂️ . The Wii U was killed early and the decision was made in 2015 to very quickly pursue a successor, and we all know how that unfolded. Regardless, my main point was that the controller design of the Switch likely had nothing to do with Mario Odyssey's gameplay/ features. The time of Nintendo doing that has passed, is my point. The features are what they are, they're uniform, they're established, and they no longer pursue gimmicky inputs that radically alter how a game is played (Wii Remote). Switch 2 input-wise is really no different from Switch 1, aside from mouse controls, which would not fit a Mario game because people want to sit on the couch and have a normal controller with dual analog controls.

It definitly would, they started working on the Switch back in 2014, revealed to investors in March 2015. And their previous game, 3D World, released in 2013.

And "they say what they say to the press" right after announcing that Bananza was originally a Switch 1 title, yeah.

Honestly I thought it was almost a lock we'd see something from MonolithSoft 😔

Disappointed Kevin Sorbo GIF
Yeah I was pretty sure we see something from Monoltih Soft this time around.

But they not type of team announce their game waaay too early and release it years later like Metroid Prime 4.....they will announce their game when they are ready.

3D World released November 2013 and the Switch didn't exist at that point, but design docs for what eventually became Odyssey were certainly made, and eventually the game was of course made alongside it. 🤷‍♂️

The Japanese one had a few things exclusive for Japan like the Ryusei no Rockman Collection.

Obake Idoro 2 (which looks like Run for Money with ghosts instead of agents).

Tamagotchi no Puchipuchi Omisecchi Omachido~sama

The deflation is real, I feel like the Nintendo Ninja's are watching these forums so they put stuff out no one asks for and purposefully not release on things people ask for. NO Mario Kart World DLC? The game for real needs re-hydration.

Okay. I don't see things this way, but I don't have supporting elements, besides what Koizumi says, so we can end discussion here I believe.

Not expecting, but hoping for (and not thinking this is like super unrealistic or too much)

a Mario 64 successor
a new Wave Race
a new F-Zero
a new Star Fox game that's not shit (shooter or adventure game)
a new 1080 Snowboarding
a new IP
...

really anything besides the usual FE, Zelda, Mario, Pokemon treadmill we're on for how long now?
....and Yoshii

It's all getting pretty stale

Pretty disappointing. Some neat things there but overall lackluster. You would think they would pull out the stops for mario's 40th.
Then no updates on mario kart is certainly a choice. It doesn't even necessarily need dlc, there's a bunch of unused roads in the base game.

Pretty bad Direct overall. I'm honestly not excited for the Switch 2 at all. Nintendo is becoming more and more of a brand management company rather than the ambitious, innovative company they once were. It just annoys me how overly safe and pragmatic they've become, almost to their own detriment.

Kind of glad I missed this live.. not that exciting overall.

Mario Galaxy ports are solid - have it on Wii though still.

Metroid Prime 4... no idea what to think about these motorcycle segments - but they aren't good thoughts.. the rest looks good though...

DQ VII Reimagined looks solid, surprised to see that there.

Virtual Boy mod looks neat, I like that, though I still have my Virtual Boy so not quite as exciting because of that - but still really cool idea.

DK DLC - I like the concept of collect fossil>gain1 of 3 random perks> etc, but not sold on this for 20 USD. Will read some feedback.

Not surprised to see RE9 coming considering the leaks, cool but don't care much. Would much rather have portable RE2/4 than VII/VIII, but I'm sure they're coming.

Glad to see more Fire Emblem.. not sure about the theme, but open to it.

Not sure what megatons I was expected or hoping for, but these weren't them, at least for me. :(

I am surprised they didnt throw MP2 on NSO today

Seriously not trying to be hyperbolic here….lifelong Nintendo fan and do not regret my switch 2 purchase, but that was probably the worst mainline Nintendo direct I've ever seen. I'm starting to get concerned there is something going wrong at Nintendo on a creative level. Nothing excited me that wasn't already announced. Even the one bright spot, Metroid, has some ugly looking tacked on open world motorcycle parts? Really trying to be open minded, but that looked like trash. Has anyone ever thought Metroid needs a motorcycle?

We got some seemingly barebones DK Bananza DLC, Nintendo Switch 2 editions of casual third party games that don't look like they'd benefit from the switch 2 upgrades that much, while the Xenoblade series is neglected? No Prime Remastered Switch 2 editions? Why don't the galaxy games have a switch 2 edition? More of the same old Fire Emblem:Teen Angst edition? The series has fallen hard since Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, which were amazing narratives that took themselves serious.

Who the hell wants to play virtual boy? And FFS just release a massive amount of music on the music app. What are they even trying to accomplish with that app? You own the music, release it. Why are we drip feeding music from decades old games that you can already listen to elsewhere. Where are the GameCube games?

I know it's only year one but I feel like we should atleast have an idea of some other things to look forward to that are…..exciting? Unique? It almost feels like they were expecting the console to bomb and didn't have much planned. Really hope we hear about some exciting things to come next year but I'm honestly not holding my breath at this point.

Fatal Frame 2 remake, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined and Danganronpa 2x2 is all I am interested in. Which is both cool and sad, since they're all remakes/remasters.
