Nintendo Downloads - July 2014

Okay, I've got a VC question I keep meaning to ask.

For NES games, they look best on 3DS or Wii? And worse on Wii U?

And for NES games, they look best on Wii U, and worse on Wii? Is that pretty much the gist of it?

"You're in for a special treat! Blurry dark versions of those games you already purchased on 3DS!"

Nice to see US get MMBN network today. Totally missed that it came out in Europe til I saw the OT, so I need to get that myself this weekend. It'll be my first MMBN game, ever!

It's a lot of fun. I'll be eager to read your impressions over in the OT!

Roger that. Thanks!
NES on 3DS seems to be just raw emulator output. So the aspect ratio isn't adjusted to match what you'd see on your television, making the image look slightly stretched in comparison. Here's an example.

On the other hand there's no blurry filter, pixels are nice and chunky while colors are vibrant, so 3DS is still leagues ahead of Wii U and I'd even put it above Wii outside native res personally. So basically; Wii (240p) > 3DS > Wii (480i/p) or Wii mode (Wii U) >>>> Wii U.

WTF NOA. Seriously. No wonder your financials are in the negative.

Welp. No VC games other than NES Mega Man for Wii U for August then.

Thank you, sörine! Is my assessment of SNES games emulating better on Wii U correct as well?

(BTW, real tech scrub question, but I assume 240p is the default Wii output?)

Same level on the Wii U.

Yeah, no thanks.

Maybe you guys can help me not be terrible at OG Mega Man games one day....

I don't know what happened with NES emulation on Wii U. It was pretty solid on Wii.

SNES and GBA on Wii U look absolutely amazing, too. NES got the shaft.

Welp. No VC games other than NES Mega Man for Wii U for August then.
NES Mega Man games are great and I'm happy they're coming out. That said, there's something about getting ONLY one franchise's games that bugs me. There should be some variety, too. I hope August has more to offer.

Just curious: what kind of eShop update would it take for you to not make one of these posts?

Release more than one damn Wii U VC game. Mega Man is an amazing game and it's great it's on the Wii U now, but one release...really?

100% agree.

There's lots of misinformation in this post.

The 3DS displays NES in the correct (or near correct) aspect ratio you will see on a TV through actual hardware (4:3). The screenshot you have posted is a raw pixel dump, which is incorrect as the NES does not output exact square pixels via actual hardware.

WTF NOA. Seriously. No wonder your financials are in the negative.

Yes, because lack of multiple VC releases is why Nintendo is having issues money wise..

I always see you complain, do you not care about any of the non-VC eShop games? On ask since I never seem to see you mention any interest in any indie or non-VC game.

They aren't my first interest, but I do care. Releasing just one VC game on Wii U a week is inexcusable.

So which is the better console/handheld for NES games then that are more closely related to it's original release?

Wait, isn't Steel Empire supposed to be a sweet shmup that they remade for the 3DS?

It's pretty good, yeah, and while the remake is a little low-budget it's also quite good and adds a few extra features (new difficulty modes, replay recording, achievements, etc). A good choice for beginners or people who wanna play a horizontal shmup that's not as hard as Gradius or whatever, but $30 is probably too steep for most people, I'd wager.

It's horrific. I tried playing Ufouria on Wii U after upgrading my Wii copy and couldn't even last 5 minutes.

I think SNES looks great on Wii U, although it looked great on Wii too.

240p isn't the default for Wii VC, 480i or 480p is depending on your setting. To activate 240p output you have to set your Wii to 480i then press A + 1 + Z on the operations guide while running a VC game. To get back to 480i press A + 2 + Z. And note that this will switch for everything that supports 240p (offhand I think it's everything but TG16?) and it's system wide iirc so you only need to do it once.

Oh, well now I'm thoroughly embarrassed. I had it entirely backwards. :(

A Mega Man game every week in August? Megaugust?

So it seems next month, we'll get Mega Man 7, Mega Man X3, perhaps 5 & 6 the same day, then either Battle Chip Challenge or Zero.

Edit: Think this is worthy of a new thread so people can anticipate which MM games will be added?

I'll be there, but not yet, game's too damn expensive!!

Doesn't mean I'm not willing to pay it though, it's just that I'm kinda broke right now, so can't afford it, but totally will get it in a few weeks more.

Wait, it is $30?!?!? no thanks

Going to take a guess at what's August VC release for Wii U
Megaman 5
Megaman 6
Megaman 7
Megaman Battle Chip Challenge
I think we'll get X3 and Zero too. Basically everything for 2014, which still leaves a good amount of Capcom stuff for the rest of the year.

I wonder what 3DS VC gets for August besides Murasame though? SMB Deluxe? DK Land trilogy? Pokémon TCG? More from the NES backlog? TG16?! (lol)

It will be funny how they fill that month considering there are only two NES Mega Man games left to release. Unless you consider MM7, MMX3 and MMZero to be NES games.

Yeah NES games on the Wii U are so disappointing, especially as SNES games look so great. Emulated games with a filter you can't turn off are a big no-no.

In general the lack of options compared to unofficial emulators is really noticeable, if there's one thing big companies like Nintendo should realize it's that to combat piracy you can't offer an inferior product to it...

I feel that's especially true on 3DS what with not being able to configure controls, and although I appreciate the NES games being the correct aspect ratio there should be the option for 1:1 pixels for those that'd prefer it.

To me, SNES games look a little more pixely on the Wii U.

They should've did what they did with previous Capcom releases, like Street Fighter and Final Fight - all three Street Fighter games (SFII:WW, SFIIT, & SSFII) and Final Fight games (FF, FF2, & FF3) all came out on the same day on VC.

Really no need to spot release all these Megaman games.

We keep hearing that the reason for the slow VC releases is because Nintendo wants it absolutely perfect. This image is absolutely horrendous compared to the 3DS/Wii/NES. How did this even pass?

Because someone at Nintendo thought it'd be a great idea to mimic shitty 80s TVs to give you the "true" 80s NES experience.

I'm sure some people actually want it to look like you have an NES hooked up via

I just wish they gave you an option to turn those filters off, so it could look like the Wii output again.

There's too many MM games in the pipeline (5-7, X3, Zero, Battle Network, Battle Chip) for that. We'll still probably get multiple games some weeks though.

Just watched Mega Man Battle Network footage for first time. Man, that was not what I was expecting. Maybe I'll get it some time.

Other than that, really shit update.

Yeah, I can see them releasing perhaps 5 & 6 the same week, then Battle Chip Challenge & Zero another week. Not sure if 7 & X3 would get released the same week.

I was surprised to see Australia gets XType out this week, although apparently its buggy and crashes consoles.

Still waiting on anything else to be announced though. Armillo, Scram Kitty, Shovel Knight still MIA.

Actually my understanding is that Nintendo wants the emulators to be accurate, not just graphics looking the same. This link gives a good explanation on what accuracy is...and why it may be impossible to accurately emulate a SNES despite increases in hardware performance.
