Nintendo Downloads - October 2009 (VC / WiiWare / DSiWare)

So we're getting another version of R-Type that's inferior to the one we already have, which itself is inferior to the arcade original. But at least this one won't be blurry! The virtual console arcade has so much untapped potential.

was just thinking the other day when that "best games of all time" voting thread popped up how cool it is that so many of these purported games are available on v.c. anyone who's never played those games has this great treasure-trove to dig into, which i think is pretty awesome considering what a pain in the ass it was to discover these old games in the past. the older i get the more i think about what it's going to be like introducing my hypothetical young'uns to the stuff i played when i was young, and being able to whip out a service like this and play

- OCARINA OF TIME
- LINK TO THE PAST
- SUPER MARIO WORLD
- SECRET OF MANA
- PAPER MARIO
- MARIO 64
- SUPER METROID

and so on and so on. . . that's just totally bad ass. love virtual console. i only wish they'd get on the dsi virtual console so i could fawn over it too.

I just realized that if the following four games showed up on the US VCA I would never give Nintendo shit about anything ever again:

Armored Police Batrider
Battle Garegga
Battle Bakraid
Dimahoo

Thankfully that'll never happen. I wouldn't know what I'd do if I couldn't talk about Nintendo's suckiness.

Just a reminder, previous ReBirth games have taken 3+ months to localize and release in the West. I don't know why you guys would expect it so soon, I'd say mid December at the earliest.

Agreed; love it. I'll never be able to sell my Wii, not least because of my VC library.

i think fighting street is on capcom classics collection vol. 1 and 2 for ps2. so u wanna save money - get that instead.

good news is - next week will be better - they can only release these games once. except for all those wonder boy ports.

Carnival King is a great light gun shooter - so quit hating.
You must be new here, no matter what games are released in a given week there will always be people bitching about a game/games that weren't released instead.

Escape Game also received some fairly positive impressions when it was released in Europe.

Haha - I know there's always hating. I just hope some people will give it a try.

(I worked on it - so I have to take the hating personally)

Oh, so you worked on Carnival King, huh?

So, sell it to me. What makes the game worth playing?

This is a pretty disgusting statement to make without the qualifier that you worked on it.

Well, he did tell us that he worked all of ten minutes after his first post, and unprompted. You could perhaps argue he should have made "full disclosure" initially, but this isn't parliament and the guy told us within minutes so I think throwing around phrases like "disgusting statement" is a little harsh.

Hey. I came clean right away. Why is it cool for people to hate on games without knowing a thing about them, but it's not okay for somebody who worked on a game to defend it against that baseless criticism? Perhaps I should have come clean on post 1, but I'm excited that a game I've put a lot of time and effort in to is hitting WiiWare (my second one) and I let my excitement get the best of me when springing to its defense.

Elevator pitch: Carnival King is a fast paced arcade light gun shooter. It's a conversion of the arcade game with the same name popular in bars and movie theaters in the early 2000's. We tuned and tweaked it to work best with the Wii pointer (adding calibration as well). There's also online leaderboards to see how well you stack up. It's a score attack game for those that like to prove they are the best, but being a light gun shooter, it's pretty simple to pick up and play.

If you play it and don't like it, I'm willing to take the criticism. If you pass it off as garbage because you wanted Castlevania instead, or because it said "minigames" in the description or because "Carnival Games" makes you sad (Carnival King existed well before that came out), then I think you're being unfair.

Yep.

You've every right to defend your game, and to say it's great, but your bias needed to be made clear instantly, not in another post later that people could easily have missed.

most of the stuff i consciously know i want is already there. the other few things i'm still twiddling my thumbs waiting on:

- BLAST CORPS
- PILOTWINGS 64
- all the snes FINAL FANTASY games (6 in particular)
- disney licensed capcom games (DUCK TALES 1&2, RESCUE RANGERS 1&2, QUACKSHOT, etc.)

but really, there's enough on v.c. to keep me busy for pretty much forever, and i have other means of playing all that, so i don't worry too much about it.

hey congrats on your 2nd wiiware game. what was your 1st game on ww

i know a lot of the feedback sounds harsh if the game isnt cave story or earthbound or castlevania. but thats the competition any game released on vc,ww or dsiware will face. thats the reality and i hope devs will step up their game, like 2dboy and.... the other guy in 2dboy.

i played fighting street and it is a historical release, without it we would not have street fighter 2 or the fighting game genre - mortal kombat, killer instinct, tekken, soul calibur, smash bros etc.

What a shitty garbage week....

Can't we have nice things like Castlevania or Cave Story?

.

how do you know that all of this weeks games are garbage?
It's already stated above that some of these games are actualy really good.

Why is it that games without big names are automaticly shit here?
WHY? WHHHHYYY?

Yeah, I'm really interested in the Tower Defense game for DSiWare (Viking Invasion) because I've wanted one for DS for a while. It's more expensive than I was hoping, though... :p

Oh I agree the VC is more than enough gaming from now until possibly the end of time.

What I'm saying is that if my four games made it to the service I wouldn't be able to crap on Nintendo about anything. They would have a free pass to jump straight to Wii3, charge $800 for it, and release one game every five years while still inexplicably selling 600k units a month.

Hopefully we see some flipping NES updates in the very near future. I'm still sitting on my free NES VC game as there's nothing available that I don't already have(that I actually want of course). I'm thinking Rygar will be next on my list unless Dragon Warrior III comes out of nowhere.

Oh well, tower defense games are not my thing so I guess I'll just keep playing Pinball Pulse. It's been a while since I've wanted something new on WiiWare or VC though since I want to get some older released stuff I really want first.

Same reason people only buy big-name Nintendo releases while great third-party games like LKS and even new Nintendo IPs languish, I guess.

Name recognition.

because most of us have our hearts set on games that were announced months ago that still haven't shown up on the service. :lol

and, to it's credit, the master system version of r-type isn't as bad as you'd think it'd be. i'm pretty sure it has an additional stage that's not in any other version (i haven't played it in about five or six years) but, why play it whenever the much superior arcade version is available elsewhere? hell, even the already available turbo version is much better.

slightly off-topic: wow, holy shit, i was just looking at the US arcade releases in comparison to the Japanese ones and it's pathetic! there are some games on the list that have never been released on compilations and it just makes you wonder how the lesser VC games are prioritized over some of these Arcade VC that have never seen console releases.

In terms of announced games, the arcade game I really want is Starblade.

Unannounced: Golden Axe - Revenge of Death Adder (hey, they have ever other GA game on VC aside from The Duel).

I would totally be about all of those Namco arcade titles that aren't hitting the US for whatever reason.

It's only going to get worse when Sega really starts firing up and somehow Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder, Virtua Racing, Outrunners, and who knows what remain JP exclusive for whatever reason.

Then again at least Golden Axe and Outrunners have name recognition going for them. That just leaves NoA being retarded and blocking them from release due to something that can be deemed as inappropriate(still wondering what the deal is with Rondo).

I bought Carnival King because I saw Incredible Technologies attached to it, and it was the fun arcade experience that I thought it would be. It's not necessarily deep, but it's fun to play in short sessions and the addition of WFC leaderboards is an improvement over the local-only Target Toss Pro Bags, which was the last IT offering for WiiWare. (And I think N-Space worked on that port, too.)

I'm a sucker for arcade game ports, even if arcade games are few and far between these days.

A bit off-topic, but I can't decide which NES game I should download with the free 500 NES pts that Nintendo gave out to those who bought the Internet Channel. Any recommendations? The 500 points expire on December 31st. Any good games hitting VC until then?

we got all of the shitty golden axe games, how about the good one! :lol they could always put "hey, this one doesn't suck! in fact, it's pretty good!" for the descriptor.

the rondo release absolutely kills me too. there isn't a perfectly emulated version of it stateside, castlevania games sell well... it seems like the logical step. but here we are, another version of r-type and a home console street fighter.

If Revenge of Death Adder gets put on JP VC but gets blocked from releasing here, I will kill everyone who participated in this thread. Yes, I can do that.

Because an enormous amount of the low-profile stuff on WiiWare is shit and there's no demo capabilities so no one is willing to gamble. If the structure of the service was more amenable to trying to find the hidden gems, more people would.

What I don't get is where's Irem in the Virtual Arcade? At the very least R-Type 1 & 2 should be up there. Besides games like GunForce 1 & 2, In the Hunt, and so on look freaking sweeeeeeet in low-res.

or maybe some of the people here are just too lazy to do a little research on the internet before they claim game X is shit. There is plenty of information for the games(even reviews) available.

At least we know Excite Bike and Bomberman DSi hit next Monday.

And I support the need for Pilotwings 64. If Nintendo put that on the service I'd shut up about never getting Rondo of Blood.
