Welcome to the Nintendo Digital Sales Charts Official Thread for March and April

Before beginning, for those who don't want to search for it, here's the link to the precedent thread, about charts in January and February:

So, in order to avoid any kind of misunderstanding: what are these charts about? What do they mean?

1. Introduction

Digital stores are becoming more and more important as the time goes by. And this can be said for retail titles being sold on digital stores too. After a quite bad beginning in the digital space (DSiWare but, above all, WiiWare and all its restrictions both from development and economic points of view), Nintendo made lots of improvement through 3DS and Wii U, especially for developers (the most recent improvement has been removing office space restriction), even if there are many things that can and should be one for a much bigger improvement (one for all: accounts not linked to consoles). Still, both the eShops for 3DS and Wii U provide various sales charts too, costantly updated and these are the most important things for this thread. So, after this brief introduction, let's clarify how these charts work.

2. The charts on eShop

2.1 How charts are organised

Charts logo is pretty visible on both eShops. On 3DS, you can use a filter to look at Current Releases charts and All-Time charts. The Current Releases charts represent how games are currently selling on eShop, while the All-Time charts rank the top 20 best selling titles since the launch of the services. You can also use the filter in order to view 3DS Only Charts, DSiWare only Charts, Virtual Console only Charts on both macrocategories.

2.2 Ratings

Almost every title in the charts is visualized with stars: those represent the average of all ratings. Only people who played a certain title for over an hour can rate that specific game, and it's not obligatory. Clicking on a game in charts, among other things, there's also the amount of ratings.

2.3 Different region, different charts

eShop Charts aren't the same all around the world. US has specific charts, as well as Japan, while Europe...has lots of specific charts: in fact, there aren't European charts, but specific European countries / areas charts. There are specific rankings for Italy, UK, Germany, France, Spain + Portugal, Scandinavia and Greece, etc.etc.

Now, about the threads themselves...

3. Organization of the threads

Nintendo eShop Charts Threads will be bi-monthly. For example, this one will be for November and December, the next for January and February 2015, and so on. Charts will be posted three times / four times a week. In fact, they are posted on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, but every two weeks All-Time Charts are posted on Thursday.

Major rules to follow:

Posts with 3DS Current Releases charts can consist of just the overall 3DS Current Releases chart or it can contain the 3DS Only (retail + 3DS dd exclusives, so no DSiWare, no VC titles) Current Releases too. The same for Wii U when Wii U eShop will be updated with this filter.

If you've posted charts for one console, but you want to post them for the other console too, just update your previous post, so there aren't two links referring to charts for the same country.

And that should be enough. So, let me make other two posts as future archives and...let's lit off!

Additional notes:

1)Ratings don't represent strictly sales. They're posted to give additional information about titles and (if possible) discussing about trends of ratings
2)The charts do represent what's selling right now...and don't. In fact, "Recent Releases" charts list the best selling software during the last two weeks. Stated in the eShop digital manual itself (thanks serplux XD ). There's also beril's experience testifying this.

I'm guessing the eShop charts use a pretty long average time period, probably around 10 days or so, so while the first day sales where the highest (though legs are pretty good so far), it kept climbing the charts for some time, simply by virtue of selling more than it did before it was released, then it went down a bit when the first few days sales were no longer accounted in the average.

KNOWN / POSSIBLE DATAS SO FAR

1) Fire Emblem Awakening is over 80k digital copies downloaded as of April 6, 2013. Souce: NPD and NoA.
2) Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is over 50k digital copies downloaded, not sure if as of April 6, 2013 or April 17, 2013. Source: NPD and NoA.
3) 3D Classics Excitebike has 23,440 ratings (last update: March 21, 2013) Considering the charts counted the period when it was free, its ratings mean that every title above Excitebike has been downloaded at least 23,440 times
4) Gunman Clive has been downloaded more times than on iOS and Android combined. Looking at the graph and considering what beril (GC's developer) said in the thread:

Just making an eyeball estimate off of the graph and what you said, if every line was 5K that would put the iOS slightly above 10k sales, Google Play at above 25k sales and eShop at above 30k sales? 65,000 sales total?

but you should realise that this is just the first two months for each platform (except the 3DS wich is a few days short of two months). The iOS and Android version has been out for almost a year and the 3DS sales just passed the android version the other day so their LTD sales are about the same, and the iOS LTD is close to the next line

This means Gunman Clive's sales are around 50k+ WW in three months.

5) Nintendo Land probably has been downloaded more than 7,000 times. All explained here:

US. It comes from the NPD thread, where creamsugar spilled Wii U February sales (66k) and said that 11% of total sales came from Zombi U bundle. The Zombi U bundle contains also a downloadable version of Nintendo Land, and those downloads are counted in charts since they come from a bundle / deal that has a price set (on the contrary, apps and games with no price at all aren't considered in charts); so, since 11% of 66k = slightly over 7k, this means that Nintendo Land has been downloaded probably 7,000 times (especially looking at how it suddenly increased in Current Charts after ZombiU bundle's release), and that's the inferior limit for its sales.

Regarding download sales, I cannot tell you the specifics, as we have not announced any concrete figures for this fiscal year or the next. On the other hand, a quarter of the sales of "Animal Crossing: New Leaf" in the last fiscal year came from its digital version, while the download sales ratio of "Tomodachi Collection," which was released only very recently, stands at approximately 10 percent after its first week.

It's unclear if Iwata is referring to units shipped or units sold to customers. However, this means Tomodachi sold at least around 45k digital copies in its first week in Japan, as of April 21st.

Since TC, like AC, appeals to an audience (young adult females) that wasn't on 3DS before, but on smartphones, they should indeed be more interested in DD as that's the norm on smartphones. Still not enough to make the top 20 yet.

Since Tomodachi is not in top 20, this means all the titles in top 20 sold at least 45k if not more.
8)Directly from the Analyst Briefing on Wednesday, 12th:

Animal Crossing: New Leaf was launched in the U.S. on Sunday, June 9 and is having an immediate impact. The digital version of the game set a new record for launch day sales in the Nintendo eShop and sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware were nearly four times greater than the previous week.

AC had a big debut, and it rose in charts pretty quickly: it's already 15th in the US All-Time Overall Chart (last update by serplux: June 29th)
Moreover, the game is high in European charts too, also thanks to the promotion "So many games!". A recap for several European countries

It's not entirely accurate, but it should be close to the real deal. I believe everything is rounded up except for two things, The Mac Store percentage to keep the order intact, and the Total Sales # for PC since the percentage was just a difference to the total of the other percentages subtracted by 100 since the angle itself was too small to calculate lol.

Beril mentioned that the PC version wasn't released on Steam.

Combined with this

@Sab_Mas Yes the Japanese sales are very good, basically the same as the rest of the world combined

It means around 100,000 units in USA + Europe and 100,000 units in Japan alone.

12) Infos on Flowerwork HD on Wii U

Nocturnal gave a general outline on sales for Flowerwork HD on Wii U.

"Earlier this year Flowerworks HD: Follie's Adventure bloomed on the Wii U eShop, a HD remake of the colourful and rather popular WiiWare title. Available in North America and Europe, it's one of a small handful of titles that have made the transition Nintendo's most recent home console store.
Michael Shamgar, the driving force behind developer Nocturnal, has been in touch to give us an overview of sales for the eShop title, which has now been reduced to $4 in North America. Though firm numbers are off the table, the following summaries show how the title is performing for the studio."
US sales started strongly, but tailed off rapidly after the initial launch sale ended. Price has now been dropped to $4 USD.
European sales have been a real surprise released two and half months later in EU outselling the US lifetime figures by 50% within 3 weeks.
Total sales are now close to 50% WiiWare (unit) lifetime sales, which has been available for around 5 years.

for the first year of 3DS's life, 3DC Excitebike was consistenly in first place in the all-times chart of UK, France and Germany. Then, sometime in 2012 a strange thing happened. For about a month Nintendo stopped updating the charts (# of ratings were still updated as usual). I believe it was some kind of maintenance because when they finally started updating them again, Excitebike was gone from the all-times chart. The number of ratings was left unchanged, but the game was gone from first place to out of the top20. I believe they removed from the count all the free downloads. This happened in the eShops of every EU nation. I don't know if it's the same for the US eShop.

Please note that other games that were free for limited periods have not experienced similar edits: Wii Street U by Google and Super Mario Bos. Deluxe are in first place in the all-times charts of EU Wii U and 3DS eShops because of that

Decent showing for Mario v.s. DK so far, and (by a quick look) it looks like the charts are quite populated by Club Nintendo-related content, aren't they?

Also, if you don't mind, it'd be great to know the amount of reviews for Pokemon Shuffle and Ironfall: Invasion, since they don't appear in charts due to their F2P nature. Also, OlliOlli, just to have something about the other crossbuy title recently launched.

Ehhhhh..... I'll tentatively say yes. Ratings are a hard thing to judge sales with. But yeah, it getting that low on the chart this early isn't a good sign. Things are a LITTLE skewed since the chart is dominated by Club Nintendo rewards, but still

Steam is probably going to be a bigger bomb than Bayo 2. At least Bayo 2 had consistent acclaim to back it, the iffy reviews alongside a poor first impression isn't going to do the game any favors.

Am I missing something? Why is Tengami selling so well overseas? I loved the game but the $8 price seemed to doom it in North America.

However, Bayo 2 is still selling at near full price at retail after 5+ months on the market. We saw what happened to certified Platinum Wii U bomb the W101's price in that timeframe.

Also Bayo 1 sold 1.35 million copies by March 31, 2010. At that time around 70-80 million PS3s and 360s have been sold.

Nintendo states that 9.2 million Wii Us have been shipped through 2014. In US Bayo 2 did around 134k via NPD. In France around 60k via Nintendo France. If no one bought any copies after the third week than 50k in Japan via Media Create. Assumming Nintendo sold all 9.2 million Wii Us and no one bought Bayo 2 outside of those reported areas the game still has a noticably higher attachment rate then its predecessor.

So I got nothing but irrational hope.

Hey I went with Nintendo of France who said 60k by end of 2014.

I figure attach rate comes into play with how Nintendo expected the game to perform. The first was a commercial failure and I doubt Nintendo thought the Nintendo consumer was inherently more receptive to the franchise than the 360/PS3 ones so it could be a viable metric. Obviously they expected more sales when they originally funded Bayo 2 but they were also anticipating a much larger Wii U user base at that time.

With the noticably higher attach rate and retailers not dumping stock I argue the game did what was expected of it within Nintendo's revised expectations.

Am I missing something? Why is Tengami selling so well overseas? I loved the game but the $8 price seemed to doom it in North America.

I guess Famitsu had an article about it. Got featured on the eShop as well.

I would assume the concept is more appealing to the Japanese audience.

For everyone else, I believe they had a 50% off sale.

Well, yeah. From pretty casual observation, the game started appearing in charts once the sale started. It was a quite consistent one as well (from 6.99 to 1.99) and, just by looking at the page right now, it's still with the promotional price. Hopefully, it's doing well enough for you, especially at the deeply reduced current price.

Just noticed that online Wii U eShop charts must be updated at the same times as on the eShop itself (probably, it's the same for 3DS): not only it's different from the Weekly Charts, but (right now) Sin & Punishment 2 is already 2nd, and it came out mere hours ago in Japan. There is something similar on Nintendo.com (with a specific chart for best-selling retail titles), but I don't know the period of reference, or if they're accurate at all.

Yes, they're the same as on eShop, so updates should be frequent and almost instaneous. The website is only missing the filters and the weekly charts.

All the Wii Disc VC console releases charted highly thanks to the discounts they have been getting. S&P2 is actually the first one I didn't buy myself because I already own the original release. Everything else was a nice addition to my library.

Theatrhythm is at #5 in the recent charts, for anyone interested. It releaesed today.

I guess the download charts on nintendo.com might correspond to the US 3DS eShop?

Nintendo showed two new Western indie games in the last ND and announced a two week sale for these and the older Trine 2. They all made the top 4.

On the free download charts, the Nico Nico app took #1 from Yakuman Houou, the f2p cross play with 3DS Mah Jongg game.

Code Name S.T.E.A.M. started its preload last week. It will become playable on May 14th and costs 5076 yen. So to compare its performance to XenobladeX here are the 3DS eShop charts:

You might notice that there are less positions and all the download only titles are on their separate top 10. Maybe they also just don't list preload titles on the 3DS side but for whatever reason, Code Name S.T.E.A.M. didn't make the top 10.

Same as on the Wii U side, Capcom's sale has ended last week so there were still a few days at the lower price to boost those titles.
