Owing to the fact that "Wii U" hardware sales have a negative impact on Nintendo's profits, the operating loss was 36.4 billion yen. As a result of exchange gains totalling 39.5 billion yen due to the depreciation of the yen, ordinary income was 10.4 billion yen and net income was 7 billion yen.
Pretty crazy how much of an impact the exchange rate had.

390,000 wii u's shipped worldwide last quarter. yep, those awful sales showing up.

it isn't currently getting better, either.

that averages 130k/month. current sales may not be much better, 60k usa, 30k eu, 30k jp/month or something? they may ship 500k/quarter (rounding up as usual for ship>recorded sales) on an ongoing basis but not much more.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

3D Land being the best selling 3DS game is awesome, Luigi also already a million seller.

Whoa, tennis did better than I thought. The lack of brain training on that list is notable. Love that Luigi is so high so soon. I expect that at 3 million after this christmas

Is the exchange rate expected to get better or worse in the next couple months? Do reliable indicates even exist for that sort of thing?

#25
Pretty much even poorer results than their Jan forecast right across the board.

Finally seems like they set an achievable 3DS forecast for once though with this years slate.

more conservative figures certainly aren't a bad idea

boggles my mind that anyone can look at those hardware/software #'s and still call the wii a fad though

The gist of it in layman's terms:

Nintendo made a loss in 2012 for the second consecutive year as its new Wii U console failed to spark excitement among consumers. The company's operating loss was 36.4 billion yen ($366 million) for the 2012 fiscal year; last quarter, the company unexpectedly predicted that it would lose $220 million in 2012 after previously saying it would turn the same amount in profit. The Wii U has sold 3.45 million units worldwide to date, missing Nintendo's goal of 4 million units for the financial year — itself a lowered expectation after the company initially predicted it would sell 5.5 million systems.

Terrible Wii U numbers. Well, it's a miracle they manged to ship even more units, I would like to know its sell-through.

3DS shipment figures are very worrying too, a 40% drop from last year and barely 1 million units shipped. NDS didn't have a 4th quarter this low until last year.

Am I understanding this correctly? Every Wii U sale or every Wi U sale in the west, because of the exchange rate, loses them money? Is that right?

If so, maybe that's why there was no real push to sell the thing.

#42
They expect to sell 9 million Wii Us in the next fiscal year according to the other thread. I think the OP just made a mistake.
as i said and breaking it down even more, even that low number is difficult to imagine.

as per my previous post they're probably looking at 500k/3 months for the slow 9 months at current rates.

so that needs 7.5m in the holiday season, based on what? selling 400k in usa in dec 12 with no supply constraints and no next gen competition?

you could always fall back on the "games are coming have no fear" excuse but ouch, i could actually see things getting worse not better for wii u. it's entirely possible to be forgotten entirely when ps4/720 hit.

this may be over the top reactionary, but nintendo has got to have another next-next gen system at least in the far flung planning stages already, i bet.

No, sales would've increased profit. They already made the systems.

They specifically said the reason why the losses were double what they expected were because they didn't sell as many Wii Us and 3DS as they expected.
