Nintendo has sold the Mariners for $661 million

Now use that money for Tokyo Mirage Sessions 2.
How about no.

Since the turn of the century, the Mariners have had one good season - 2001. They were considered one of the greatest regular season teams in baseball history - didn't even make the World Series. Since then, they've been terrible. No playoff appearances since.

This year they do have a shot though. I actually think they'll sneak in via the Wild Card.
No way man, the Royals are coming in hot.

2001 was historic but the following two years they had the third best record in the league behind the two teams ahead of them in the division. After that, they've been irrelevant.

We might sneak in this year, though. I fucking hope.

They had to pay the players and run the team. It isn't 600M profit.
Nintendo owned the controlling interest in the team, but the organization made its own money. Nintendo wasn't the ones writing the checks to the players.

Fools, team will be worth more after we make it deep into the playoffs. Or maybe we're actually viable this year because Nintendo sold the team and lifted a curse.

Really? They just let the city and the team pay for itself.

No wonder billionaires just buy these things. It's zero risk venture.

That is how every team works. TV deals, Ticket prices etc. pay for everything. Very few Teams go above and beyond what the team is capable of Generating. Typically only the Yankees are occasionally willing to spend more than they take in. Nintendo was decent in the fact that when the team made money they did not pocket the profits. There are owners out there that do the bare minimum and pocket all the extra cash.

Is it me or Nintendo want to decrease their western presence? First I thought this was when they appointed Iwata as NoA CEO. I miss old days where NoA was almost separate entity, and had freedom to do whatever they want. Now we don't have CEO, Nintendo Power, Mariners... What's next? Fire Reggie, shut down NoA & NoE and go Japan exclusive? I bet it's one of their plans for the future.

I hope they won't sell Nintendo World Store too.

Reggie was promoted to CEO of NOA.

I'm being serious here. You can't build your own narrative without at least checking the basic facts about a situation.

Reading Yamauchi's entry on Wikipedia it looks like Nintendo never really cared about the Marines, it was more like a personal favour Yamauchi did to Seattle
In the early 1990s, the Seattle Mariners were available for sale and United States Senator Slade Gorton asked Nintendo of America to find a Japanese investor who would keep the club in Seattle. Yamauchi offered to buy the franchise, even though he had never been to a baseball game. Although the owner accepted the offer, the MLB commissioner Fay Vincent and ownership committee were strongly opposed to the idea of a non-North American owner and did not approve the deal. However, following the strong support and sentiments of the people of Seattle and press the commissioner formally approved the deal, under the condition that Yamauchi had less than 50% of the vote. This was a major development in American baseball, because this opened the gates for Japanese baseball players to American league teams, which had been previously denied. In 2000, the club made its first profit of $2.6 million since its acquisition by Yamauchi. Yamauchi never attended a Mariners game.

Mainstream mostly forgets that Nintendo even OWNED this team. And they still have a good presence in the Mariners board, they just don't own the team anymore.

Just because they want to make more money from a PHILANTHROPIC GESTURE made in the early 90s doesn't mean they want to get away from the west.

I mean fuck dude, Baseball is HUGE in Japan, owning a baseball team in America would've been like a status symbol.

For real, the N64 ken griffey games were great games.

Lou Pinella had some nice teams when he was there. Some really nice players went through there--of course Griffey in his prime, Randy Johnson, Edgar Martinez, ARod, and obviously Ichiro.

Hopefully ownership is in good hands. M's are a shitastic team but the ballpark is great and I love popping down across the border to see them play a few games a year.

I wasn't being serious and I know he is now. But still, I want the old, cool NoA back. Old NoA who had a MLB baseball team, its own magazine, an internet forum where fans gather, a Pokémon Center, freedom to go talk any third party they want... Things have changed the way I don't like...

If my math checks out, that values the Mariners at 1.4 billion dollars. Goddamn is that an obscene amount of money.

Sports teams are ridiculous nowadays. Especially if you're in a big market. The Seattle market is growing at a ridiculous rate too, by the time their next TV deal is done they'll be worth an even more obscene amount of money.

I still remember a really old Nintendo Power section where someone wrote in asking why they stopped making Ken Griffey Jr. baseball games, and they joked about making a game called "Ichiro's Base Hit Frenzy" since Griffey was no longer with the Mariners. It was one of my favorite responses I'd ever read in that segment.

I dunno, this thread just made me think of it.
