Nintendo needs a multiplayer killer app that isn't 1-2-Switch

There are only two types of games that have almost universal appeal amongst the super-casuals with immediately understandable controls:

  • Side-scrolling Mario: move left to right, jump over the bad guys
  • Bowling: throw the ball

Outside of that you are going to deal with confused looks.

mario kart sales peaked as high as 2d mario.
so did wii fit.
didn't cod peak at a similar 30 million or so point?
minecraft has outsold all of those and is a mess of collectable objects.

most people may not be interested in consuming the widest selection of games possible, but a tremendous range of things have the capacity to be the next big thing.

Dear Nintendo, port Wii Sports Club.

Also, consider porting Pac-Man VS using the 3DS (or a second Switch) as the device for the asymmetric gameplay.

Yeah 1-2 switch as the "show friends" multiplayer game.... Naaaaaaaaaaah

Dunno what they were thinking at all. Should have had Mario kart ready for launch

Is Smash Bros coming to the switch? One of the few games I miss from the Wii U. Probably should buy it for the 3DS. But, would love a switch version...

There's been no announcement, but I think there's quite a few people who are expecting something akin to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's touch-ups to the content when E3 rolls around.

It's heavily rumored, with the missing Smash 4 Amiibos being the biggest indicator of a Switch port being on the way, but we have no confirmation thus far. We may get something on Smash 4 Deluxe at E3.

In a perfect would it would be pocket rumble. All the hooks that made popular Street Fighter 2 are there. Simple control scheme. Easy to understand. And it looks retro as fuck, which would make people think "oh yeah...I fucking love nintendo"

Perfect storm that I wish someone high up at nintendo would see.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is definitely gonna be that multiplayer killer app for the Switch, at least until Smash is a thing on the Switch (be it Smash 4 Deluxe or Smash 5....or both). As for Splatoon 2, it could definitely be great for wireless LAN multiplayer. But given the button requirements for Splatoon 2 (based on the demo build we've seen), it likely won't be as perfect of a demonstration of the Switch's multiplayer potential as MK8 Deluxe. Pokémon Stars, should that be a thing, would fall in the same situation, but there could be potential for an in-game equivalent to Pokémon Stadium for the sake of instant local multiplayer.

Shoulda been a launch title
Gotta leave something for (likely) May. The last thing the Switch needs are Wii U-level droughts in its first year.

Rocket League, Overwatch, Splatoon 2, Battlefield bad company 2, COD, Pacman Vs, MK8, Smash, CS:Go, Donkey Kong arcade with vs mode, and a New 1 vs 100 trivia style online game, mortal Kombat 2 or Trilogy HD remake, PvZ:GW, Madden, NHL.

All of these come to mind that would certainly help. I personally don't think there is a silver bullet. Having a variety of good multiplayer games is the key. Bomberman is a great example, but it needs a performance patch.

Even if Blizzard gave a shit about Nintendo, the Switch is limited to 8 players for wireless LAN. Overwatch has 12 players for regular matches.

Mario Kart is born for this, that's why I was completely shocked when it wasn't a launch title.
I mean, Nintendo would have been caught with their pants down in April if they didn't push MK8 Deluxe back a bit. I suppose the Wii U's Year 1 droughts spooked them (as it should have).

Seriously pick up Snipperclips now, then ARMS and Mario Kart, THEN Splatoon 2. Maybe Bomberman if that's your thing, but there are some good co-op games coming our way or are already out.

I think we might see some more announcements at E3.

It's still not too late for a "Switch Sports" title. The Switch was going to sell-out regardless, with or without additional killer apps. If they announce a new multiplayer game for Summer or Fall, I can see it taking off and selling more Switch units.

I agree with the premise of the OP. I want to show off all the features of the Switch to friends that are new to it but none of my friends want to play 1-2 Switch. It's not fun.

Snipperclips is what you're looking for. It immediately shows off many of the benefits to owning a Switch, is easy to pick up and immediately understand, and is just a well made game all around.

Having Splatoon or MK8 ready at launch would have done a lot for this. But Switches are mostly sold out (in my area at least) so Nintendo is fine in staggering those releases.

I agree.

Nintendo Land had instant appeal in its presentation alone. Plus basically all of the games had instantly apparent appeal and keep me coming back. I don't think this is the case with 1, 2, Switch.

Nintendo would be wise to both:

1) Capitlaize on brand recognition/fan appeal with a Nintendo Land approach.

2) Make the games available in the "hardware demonstration" app have longevity and replayability.

Yeah, until something big like MK8 hits this is what I've been showing off to people. Hammers the point home quickly and people like it.

Also went to a bar and played FAST RMX and that drew some attention.

Played 1-2 Switch at the study association bar. Was a big riot. Everyone was like wow that's a Switch, and at least four or five people came up to me saying, I so need to get a Switch pronto.

The people are the presentation when it comes to 1-2 Switch. You can't drag the Wii U to social settings, so the appeal is also pretty nonexistant.

I'm really interested in 1-2 Switch but I'm worried my GF and I will play for a few hours and then never come back to it. That's pricey at $50.

Did they at least indicate that they will possibly add more games via DLC?

This. It's currently, by far, the best Switch game.

I don't wholly disagree. Mario Kart Deluxe, or even better, Diddy Kong Racing alongside launch would have been *ahem* bananas.

Everyone loves a great kart racer.

Edit: I love 1-2 Switch though, it's an awesome party game.

They could release a Switch port of Melee and people will buy Switches for it and then maybe the best-selling GameCube game of all time wouldn't regularly go for over $60 for loose copies anymore.

The current rumor (from Eurogamer) is that Melee will get a Virtual Console release, with Smash 4 being the one that'll get an enhanced port.

Realistically speaking, Smash 4 would be a better draw for the average joe anyway thanks to the larger roster, so it'd make sense to do an enhanced port of that.

I Guarantee they have lots of multi player experiences coming but please bring New Wave Racer, Pilotwings , 1080, and lots brand new I.P s I think they are just waiting on e3 now.

A multi player luigi mansion would be killer and I still this will be one of those killer games that where rumoured and are coming.

Splatoon
Mario Kart Deluxe
Smash Bros
Pokken (Hopefully)
Snipper Clips (not my thing but looks fun)
Fast RMX (discount purchase for me)
Bomber Man (doesn't look fun for me)
Pokémon (Nintendo and GameFreak please!)

Some of These are great games but maybe not the killer multiplayer app you're wanting?

I personally want something like Diablo 3 or Overwatch or Rocket League.

I'm not a big fan of First person shooters but everytime I play the Switch (I only play in handheld mode) I want something like Destiny or Overwatch.

If Bomberman came as like a pack-in or was cheaper it would be a lot more popular I think. People just don't know about it and must be off-put by looking at the price and the back of the box
