Nintendo needs to give Bowser a rest

Yeah but Wario has already shown he can stand on his own. Daisy is like Waluigi, only with a luxury that she starred in a non-mainline game.
Though there is one definitely "mainline" Mario game that had Wario--Super Mario 64 DS, which makes the game feel pretty out of place in the series as a whole on some level but at the same time it's also the source of a lot of Mario's modern aesthetic design (owing that to the fact that the team then went on to make New Super Mario Bros.). So the streams can cross, they just don't seem to like to.

This attitude of Mario series "purity" seems to be crossing over into Mario spinoffs even, where Mario Kart has become really insular to "mainline" Mario as of late with Donkey Kong, Wario, Waluigi, and Daisy only in due to being grandfathered in.

Which I think is a shame, because setting another 2D Mario in Sarasaland with all of its bonkers ass enemies and environments might do the series some good to shake things up from a visual standpoint.

Yeah but Sarasaland has terrible gravity and physics so Daisy should probably clean the place up.

Also wasn't 64 DS a bit weird in that it separated the caps gameplay to four characters?

Instead of another Mario game in Sarasaland, how about a new Mario game in Subcon? Preferably a 3D one.
At this point what would a Mario game in Subcon do differently to any other Mario game?
I can't think of any level aesthetic in Mario 2 that has been in another Mario game since then, and the important enemies from that game like Shy Guy, Bob-Ombs and Birdo have already been in other Mario games.
Do you just want a game where you can't jump on enemies to kill them and have to throw them?

Which mainline game Birdo have appeared on? What about Wart, Mouser, etc?

Mario 2 featured vertical platforming which is not seem that much in other titles in the series. Plus, there is the "pull turnip" mechanic which still is exclusive to Mario 2.

Plus, as I said, I'd like a 3D game set on subcon, not a side scroller one.

I know it's not part of the "main canon" of Mario, but the Mario & Luigi games did a great thing, where they made Bowser a reluctant protagonist - in Bowser's Inside Story.

This worked great in that they had a main antagonist that was different, for those that are bored with Bowser being the primary antagonist, but he still wasn't on the side of good at all. You still fight him several times but you also fight AS him. (This doesn't actually spoil the game btw. It's awesome.)

In a way, it's a shame they didn't try doing this again. It was great fun.

I love Bowser but that doesn't mean I wouldn't have loved to see Wart in Super Mario 3D world and Tatanga at the beginning of Super Mario Galaxy stealing the castle.

But Bowser can stay in the games and in my heart, becuase he is the perferct archvillian.

Again, why do people wanted Wart, a creature from dreams, to be in 3D World? I am yet to play it, so perhaps I am missing something here.

If anything, he should have been the villain (or the secret boss instead of... the actual secret boss) in Dream Team.

3D world is a tribute to SMB2 (as 3d Land was to SMB3), the fairies come for subcon, Wart comes from subcon.
As you say, you didn't play it, so it's understandable.

Even if the characters themselves haven't been in mainline Mario games, those style of boss fights have. Birdo is essentially a bullet bill launcher that moves back and forth that you have to throw it's projectiles at and there have been several Mario bosses who throw projectiles you have to catch and throw back at them. Wart is essentially a Bowser reskin that blows bubbles instead of fire. And Mouser is just a guy that throws bombs which was done again for the mole miniboss in Mario Sunshine and probably a bunch of other times I can't remember.

I would be with you on the vertical platforming thing but a lot of the levels in Super Mario 3D World are based on vertical platforming, it's the whole point of the cat suit. That game also featured the four characters from Mario 2 with their abilities from that game too, and it takes place in a world outside of the Mushroom Kingdom. Super Mario 3D World is basically the 3D subcon game you want in all but name.

I guess I should hurry up and buy 3D World then, huh? xD

So here's how I'd like to see Nintendo setup the next main Mario game:

Bowser has disowned the Koopa Kids for not being able to help him stop Mario and basically boots them out from under him completely abandoning him as he returns to his home lands (think Super Mario Bros. 3 World 8). This is when Bowser Jr. shows up to recruit the Koopa Kids after he himself was disowned by Bowser for similar reasons.

Together all eight of them overthrow Bowser and take over his kingdom. It doesn't stop there as Bowser Jr. has a plan which doesn't involve taking over the Mushroom Kingdom but instead expanding the existing borders by spreading fire and lava. Each Koopa Kid is sent to a land (Mushroom Kingdom, Sarasaland, Del Fino, and so on basically revisiting major areas from past games and using them to inspire the level design of said world) with a fire crystal which, once activated, causes a volcano to grow and erupt spreading lava and fire across the land converting it into perfect territory for Bowser Jr.'s new empire and making the land unlivable for the prior inhabitants.

Each time you clear a level within a world the level design will slightly change (think Super Mario Land 3 with how levels would change as the world itself changed) with fire and lava slowly spreading. For example in the ice world the ice will obviously melt and be replaced with more a water level that will rise, some platforms will be weak and collapse under the weight of characters, you get the idea. Other areas will become more hazardous in their own ways as this effect spreads. Worlds will also have several paths through them and once a fire crystal is destroyed the land reverts to its original state and all past levels can be revisited.

Bowser meanwhile seeks the help of Mario, Luigi, and Peach to stop Bowser Jr. and the Koopa Kids from ruining his land and keeping the true king from his rightful throne. The three agree to help him (or rather stop the destruction of the surrounding lands) and team up with him. Mario is the balanced character. Luigi is about speed, slippery controls, and high jumps. Peach obviously has her slower jumps, hover ability, and isn't quite as fast as Mario. Bowser is slow but powerful, he's able to use this strength to one hit enemies Mario and the gang have to hit several times (like Chargin' Chuck) and can also breach walls and obstacles no one else can (think like Knuckles from Sonic 3 and Knuckles) which opens new routes and secrets on levels.

The game ends with Bowser Jr. and the Koopa Kids being defeated but swearing revenge, not just on Mario and friends but also Bowser too who admits to being a bit too harsh on them and basically apologizes for his actions so they can make up. As they bury the hatchet they basically come up with the idea to attack Mario and them which is where the game leaves off with Bowser, Bowser Jr., and the Koopa Kids laughing evilly while Mario, Luigi, and Peach look on nervously wondering if they truly made the right call with Bowser.

I agree. Wario hasn't been in a mainline Mario game in such a long time, since the gameboy perhaps? Why aren't they making better use of him? I realize he's had several good games of his own, but it's strange that he no longer appears in Mario platformers.

Ganon needs to take a rest more than Browser. I'm still pissed off over Twilight Princess.

That was nine years ago, get over it already. Ganon's appeared in one game since then, and even then his appearance is contested.

Anyway, chalk me up for the "no" catagory; Bowser's a great villain and still has refreshing and fun boss fights. So many people in here are clamoring for change for the sake of change, but besides the ideas for a RTS or Dungeon Keeper style game (really, a DunKeep game done a la Bowser would be pretty spectacular), they're all so...I don't know, I can't see them making it past the pitching stage.

Bring back Foreman Spike.

Waluigi hasn't gone by that name in a long time, ok? That was a different life, then.
