Nintendo of America says Metroid Prime 4 and "new Pokemon game" are 2018 titles

They has been a main line Pokémon every year for many years already. So I will not be surprise if the next one will be 2018 Switch's big holiday title.

Spring: Yoshi, Kirby
Summer: Super Smash DX, Mario Maker DX
September: Fire Emblem
October: Metroid Prime 4
November: Pokémon Switch

2019: Animal Crossing, Pikmin 4, Donkey Kong, Pokémon Switch 2 (Mid-Sequel like Ultra Sun & Moon)

But at the same time, TPC has usually taken a year-long break between generations. While I do recognize the possibility of a 2018 release for Gen 8, a Fall/Holiday 2019 launch would be more likely given TPC & Game Freak's history (as mentioned earlier in this thread).

I don't see why they would even have bothered announcing Pokemon if it was holiday 2019. They don't gain anything from that and I don't think they really care about fan reaction. If it was that far away they would likely not have said anything till 2019.

Most likely scenario to me is they have had the Switch dev kit for some time and have been working on it for a while anyway so will launch in holiday 2018. They didn't show anything because that would have totally stolen USM's thunder.

If anything, I feel like the fans forced The Pokémon Company's hand given the backlash surrounding Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon's reveal. As Joe said, a 2018 release just doesn't correlate with how TPC usually operates. And the last time a good chunk of us thought they'd go against their go-to-the-beat-of-their-own-drum nature with the Eurogamer rumor of Stars, their usual ways ended up winning in the end. Also keep in mind that if Gen 8 were to be a thing next year, they'd have to fast-track the current anime.

Nope

Your timelines are screwy

Generation 1: 3 years 9 months
Red & Green: Feb 1996
Blue: September 1996
Yellow: September 1998

Year Off: 1997

Generation 2: 3 years
Gold & Silver: November 1999
Crystal: December 2000

Year off: 2001

Generation 3: 3 years 10 months
Ruby & Sapphire: November 2002
FireRed & LeafGreen: January 2004
Emerald: September 2004

Years off: 2003, 2005

Generation 4: 4 years
Diamond & Pearl: September 2006
Platinum: September 2008
HeartGold & SoulSilver: September 2009

Year off: 2007

Generation 5: 3 years 1 month
Black & White: September 2010
Black 2 & White 2: June 2012

Year off: 2011

Generation 6: 3 years 1 month
X & Y: October 2013
Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire: November 2014

Year off: 2015

Generation 7:
Sun & Moon: November 2016
Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon: November 2017

Every generation has been longer than 3 years and every generation has had one year off. Having the next generation be next year would be massively unprecedented.

Both valid points

Though we do have the following Mythicals we need to get:

Original Color Magearna
Eternal Flower Floette

So there's still things to distribute, but I do agree that only one Mythical and the now imminent battle with Olivia does change things a bit.

I'm just still doubting it's next year. It's against everything The Pokémon Company has done and set out for the franchise. It's too soon for a new generation. They risk Yo-kai Watching it.

Maybe they could do a new Magearna event this year and have it in it's original color. You know, as USUM are an "alternate story", Magearna also has an alternate color in this universe.

They could even be replacing Zygarde with a Floette mission, who knows? But I think they will just keep it for when the gen 6 remake comes. If they didn't do anything for it until know, i doubt something will happen anytime soon.

That would be... interesting. I doubt it though. They are probably advising/sharing tech for Prime 4 while working on whatever the hell they've been working on the last 3.5 years.
hmm aside of the possibility of a new DK which i would appreciate, i could also see a dormant franchise being revived by them.
they have been specialists at that.. maybe kid icarus or pilot wings?
The Prime games are pretty meaty though, and quite dense as well, with a lot of complexity in it's design- it's probably not something that can be developed quickly, especially by a new team. Also, not all of EPD works quickly. It depends on the size and priority of the project. Pikmin games, for example, seem to take forever. And then there is the fact that this being an EPD game is still a rumor at this point.

yeah i dont get that comment. prime is easily a 20 hour game at the first play through. echoes is probably 25-30 and corruption is 15... they are quite meaty imho..

If anything, I feel like the fans forced The Pokémon Company's hand given the backlash surrounding Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon's reveal.

I'm not sure this holds much water. I mean if you use that argument then there's another argument which goes that announcing it so early is going to lead to absolutely sky high expectations. If people are thinking / talking about it for a full 2 and a half years before it comes out then they're gonna expect a seriously massive revamp / overhaul. Holiday 2018 might mean people may forgive it using a similar engine to Sun and Moon albeit in higher resolution and with better graphics.

As soon as you start talking about holiday 2019 people are going to be expecting a full, Breath of the Wild style open world and the backlash if it doesn't have that, after 2 and a half years, could be even worse.

I just don't think they would make the announcement based on fan backlash to USM being 3DS exclusive. They KNEW how much people wanted Pokemon on Switch. If they cared that much they would probably have tried to make USM cross platform with online cross play like Monster Hunter World has.

They're such a stubborn, set in their ways company that I don't think "fan backlash about USM" which, let's face it, was probably mainly found on ultra hardcore sites like this (I don't think there was much of a general fan backlash about it), would be enough to sway them to announce a new game SO far before it launches. Even by this industry's standards, announcing a game fully 2 and a half years before it's due to launch is very, very premature.

Ouch. Hopefully they can do much better than that. That would only be 2 new games from January to September, and those 2 don't even have a large appeal.

Is it at all possible (genuinely not sure) that this "core Pokemon RPG" they're working on for Switch could actually be the Diamond / Pearl remake? They could launch that in Holiday 2018 for Switch and then take 2019 off.

Then we could get Gen 8 for Switch in 2020. That would mean Gen 7 lasted effectively 4 years with a year off, and Switch owners still got a shiny title to play to keep them occupied until Gen 8. This would kinda fit with their traditional timelines and the Anime wouldn't it?

GF typically doesn't like to split Gens across systems.

My dream scenario:

While XY were being developed, Masuda foresaw the leap to HD development in their future. He not only future proofed the pokemon models to ease future development, but also began planning for Gen 8, knowing the scope of development could be enormous. After proving himself worthy with ORAS, Ohmori was chosen to direct Gen 7, a stop-gap generation, because Morimoto and Unno are chosen to be co-directing Gen 8, which has been in development since the release of XY, and is a massive HD open world.

Please be the gen of our dreams.

What's the excuse for Gen VI then?

Maybe USUM is the BW2 that we deserve.

Pokémon Crystal aside, TPC & Game Freak doesn't usually split up generations with different systems (or more specifically, a family of systems like the 3DS family). We'll probably have to wait until Gen 8 starts before we get our Gen 4 remakes.

There wasn't one between gen 4 and 5 or 5 and 6 (instead there was a break between D/P/P and Platinum, and then another break between B/W1 and B/W2 going off Japanese release schedules).

Didn't they say something like "it may not release for a year" in the Pokemon announcement? Expected it to be a 2018 title (not so much Metroid).

Edit: https://youtu.be/MRAtmZ2pQqU?t=9m38s

Yeah they said it may not release for "more than a year".

This suggests holiday 2018 to me even more. "More than a year" from June 2016 would be 1 and a half years to holiday 2018. If it was holiday 2019 that would make it 2 and a half years.

I think if they knew it was going to be 2 and a half years out they would have either said "more than 2 years" or they wouldn't have even bothered announcing it. Announcing game which is still 2 and a half years out, without even having a trailer or anything doesn't feel right to me. I reckon we will see it properly in a Pokemon direct in Spring 2018, ready for a holiday 2018 release.

Then fine, what about a Pokemon Stars for Switch that is a crossover with 3DS next year??

They wouldn't jump hardware mid-console generation.

Plus there seems to be issues with local play for 3DS/Switch connectivity, which is why Monster Hunter XX doesn't have it

To be fair, they didn't with Crystal. Gold & Silver were GameBoy Color games that could be played on the original GameBoy, but they were undoubtedly GameBoy Color games.

Yup. GBC had black cartridge games that could run on the old Game boy and clear cartridge games that only ran on the GBC.
