Nintendo Reflects on Cancelled Wind Waker 2, Would Have Been Set on Land

Hey, that's just how I feel. "Too kiddy" is a stupid complaint.

Bruh, do you realize that Super Mario Galaxy came out the next year? lmao

Mario Galaxy is a good game, but its definitely not a generation-defining type of game that Nintendo used to churn out on the regular prior to their Wii malaise. Its just a very good game that is further elevated due to the fact that it had no real competitors as the industry had largely moved beyond dedicated 3D platformers at the time of its release.

Wind Waker 2 would have been like 80% similar to TP, guys.
And would have had a way nicer art style and cast to go with it.

TP was a smart financial decision but as far as the games themselves go while I like Twilight Princess, it was no Wind Waker for me. The actual sequel to Wind Waker Linebeck aside is fucking garbage to what we could've gotten too.

LOL. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are a couple of the greatest games of all time.

Curious how many here were hating on "Celda" back then but now are bemoaning a lack of Wind Waker 2.

I'll admit was a bit "wtf" at the initial reveal seeing screens but then I saw it in motion and hoo nelly...

Still one of the most beautiful games of all time.

And Twilight Princess is? C'mon, son.

Zelda is my #1 Nintendo franchise and I don't even care much about Mario overall, but the Galaxy games are easily the best things Nintendo put out on the Wii.

No. It would have been if Nintendo had bothered to evolve the combat beyond what was impressive in 1998. For a sixth-gen action-adventure game it is very, very good, but it still falls short of being one of the greats of its generation because they rested on their laurels too much in regards to the core gameplay mechanics.

But it was the last game where it felt like Nintendo was still actually trying to keep up with the rest of the industry. Now, they're just so far behind the times its laughable. Skyward Sword was a joke, and BoTW would be impressive by 2010 standards, but today? It just looks like your average open-world action-rpg.

Wind Waker was a good game, but I consider Twilight Princess to be the true future timeline & sequel to Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask.

As a newcomer to the series, I much prefer WW to TP. The art style holds up better (holy shit the NPCs are ugly in TP), it's not as front loaded with stuff like the terrible bug hunting padding, the story and overworld movement are more enjoyable as a whole, Link emotes regularly, your companion isn't a dickweed in the beginning and has a better story arc. It's just a bigger joy to go through. TP has better dungeons in the later half of the game, but I feel the overall experience is brought down by all of the datedness and frustrating moments. I'd pick up WW any day of the week over TP easily. It's a shame the game got shat on on a preconception of the art style not being mature enough; talk about an ironically childish response.

Also fuck Zant to Hell. Talk about wasted potential.

keep up graphically, you mean.

galaxy was GOTY 2007, and 2007 was one hell of a year. what it was lacking in technical power it more than made up for in art direction.

Twilight Princess was a much better (and better-selling) game, so as far as I'm concerned, they made the right decision.

And frankly, I think it's good that they've decided to explore a variety of artstyles and tones for the series. It keeps things fresh.

They didn't fuck it up. It was a proof of concept that eventually got realized in the incredibly under appreciated Spirit Tracks. That game was awesome.

...nah
i forced my way through some of the poor design choices for that game, but couldn't finish Spirit Tracks. Zeldas shouldn't be merely endured.

We already have a Wind Waker 2

Sucks that didn't get canceled.

Gotta be honest here I have no idea what Team Alucard is talking about

Realtalk tho Midna was good
Her shrunken-form design sucks though. She deserved a way more elegant design, not some generic anime-inspired shit.

Sorry for this controversial opinion.

It's cool I'm not triggered I barely remember Midna because I gave up on TP half way through but she? was chill iirc

A lot of us probably did change our tune seeing the game in action.

And we saw it in, what, 2001? 2002? We've had 13-15 years to mature and change our opinions.

Wind Waker was by far the worst 3D Zelda and very close to worst overall.

Wait what?

First of all spirit tracks and phantom hourglass exist and are by far the worst Zelda games...

PLUS we are complaining on a very high level when even your "worst" Zelda is a highly acclaimed game whith millions of sales AND it even got an HD remake...

It sounds like the game itself wasn't really canceled, it probably would have been fundamentally really similar to what TP turned out to be in terms of gameplay, maybe with a storyline more along the lines of PH/ST. It is a shame that we never got more WW-like visuals but whatevs.

I love Wind Waker, I really do. It was my first Zelda game and I love the ocean and sailing in pretty much any game that's possible in. But the dungeons are just so bleh and few that it's impossible to give the edge to it over TP imo. TP wasn't as good as it could've been, but it's still an amazing game with my favorite Zelda dungeons.

there's also this thing now:

apparently it's popular or something

I think that's what they meant by "got", but it was frankly hard to parse in lowercase considering it's also a word.

You are on drugs if you think Twilight Princess is either a better, more revolutionary, or more influential game than Mario Galaxy. And I say this as someone that actually loves Twilight Princess (and also Wind Waker).

Wind Waker was by far the worst 3D Zelda and very close to worst overall.

Mother of god some opinions on this thread...

Twilight Princess looked great outside the NPC character designs, the game had a lovely atmosphere. (Semi) realism isn't a bad or edgy thing.

Galaxy 2 > Twilight Princess > Galaxy

it is known

I wouldn't classify either of those two as 3D Zelda the way people usually classify the games. They have 3D graphics but gameplay moves on 2D planes just like ALttP.

Wind Waker was very close to be a masterpiece. But it needed another year of development.

very close
another year of development

I wholeheartedly agree. Props for defending Twilight Princess while having a Wind Waker avatar, this "us vs them" thing is fucking silly. Both are amazing games and you can love both.

Glad Wind Waker 2 was passed over for the dark and gritty Twilight Princess. There's room for both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess in the series and I'm glad they share the same home ^^

Thank heavens. Twilight Princess ruled when I was 13.
Have at it, OldGAF.
Now I play the more sophisticated 2d entries because I am a learned scholar of the Snappy Gameplay Of Original Games Entity, or SGOOGE, as it's often abbreviated.

It's cool how nearly every Zelda game has a unique look. I'm a fan of the interpretation claiming the Zelda series is the same fairytale told differently each time. In that sense I'm glad it didn't get a console sequel.

Nah. That honor belongs to Majora's Mask. It has worse dungeons than Wind Waker and a worse overworld with wonky controls. The only area MM wins is story but just barely.

Nah. MM has got every other Zelda game beat in terms of atmosphere and world interaction. One of the tighter and more focused Zeldas and the last time they truly did something radically different with the franchise.

So... it wouldn't have been a seaquel, eh?

...I'll allow it.
