Nintendo Reveals the Toads' Gender Secret

But which character would be the tank? And would it be a defense/absorb type or agility/evade type?

If it did a Alliance/Horde style system the "horde" would have tanks like Bowser/Womp - probably just defence. I could see Yoshi being the "alliance" agility tank.

Doesn't surprise me. Though yeah, I tend to view Toadette as a girl.

What about Kirby and Yoshi? Are they gender neutral too?
Kirby is whatever he feels like. Or eats:

"We never gave them genders, we just gave one a lower pitched voice and red and blue clothes, and the other one a higher pitched voice with pink clothes and pigtails. Just some gender characteristics, you know."
Ha, not to mention the "-ette" at the end of Toadette, typically associated with females

Yeah, Toad's a dude and Toadette's a girl, in my book

Not that it matters either way

Well, there's ChuChu, a pink-octopus character who is Kirby's love interest in the Dream Land games. She's the closest to a female Kirby.

never heard of her before today (maybe because Kirby's Dream Land 3 was never released in Europe)

The wiki says she's an octopus. She looks cute!

I always thought of Kirby as a genderless character though.

Ah! I forgot about this commercial! See I like to think of Kirby as a free spirit, haha.

People really are way too hung up on the gender question. "Is your baby a boy or a girl?" Don't answer and it drives people up the wall. The answer to the Toads gender is simple: It doesn't matter.

Kirby is gender neutral, which makes a lot of things in the later series and the secondary marketing (anime, comics, etc) really interesting and progressive.

Of course Nintendo would prefer it if you just don't think about it too much.

Birdo and Vivian are trans in Japan but it seems Nintendo has made every attempt for them to be strictly female everywhere else.

Birdo was pretty clearly trans in the SMB2 manual but since then Nintendo has been like "shit, controversial, sweep that under the rug and never mention it again." Possibly one reason why we never got Captain Rainbow.
Yeah, they definitely edited Vivian, but with Birdo they just refer to her as female and that would be the politically correct thing to do with a trans-female anyway. It's not like they bring up her birth certificate every game.

Apparently Toad's can detach their mushroom heads and use them as parachutes too!

It's a hat.

Some Toads have hair coming out from under them:

Though who knows what's going on under the hat. Their heads could still bulge out under them. They still have big hats when they become tanooki or propellor toads, but it would look weird if they didn't:

But there's no way their heads would fit inside this helmet if their hats were part of their head:

They were always meant to look like they were wearing turbans.

Peach and Rosalina look like this when they wear a tanooki suit:

and we know it's not because they have crazy thunder thighs and huge heads.

It's weird to think about Toadsworth not being male. But-but... mustache....
Maybe all Toads can grow facial hair, and shaving it is a matter of personal preference whether you want to look dignified/respectable or you want to maintain a clean, youthful or even feminine look.

Also to the above poster, I always imagined the hats were turbans and read Toad's dialogue in Mario 3 in a stereotypical Indian accent (think Apu from Simpsons).

He also clarified that Toad and Toadette are not romantically involved.
“But I think what I can say is that Toadette and Toad are not siblings[...]”
Not siblings and Japan means of course they're not romantically involved~

Yeah...this dude can fuck off.

Toad's male and Toadette is female. Otherwise, they would all be called Toad.

"Progressive." Give me a fucking break. They're gender-less because when they were created they were simple and abstract enough to not need one. No one cared. They haven't updated them since because the fact remains, it doesn't matter.

Quick, someone grill Atari on what gender the Pong paddles are.

That is indeed lovely. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

It's a ceremonial 'tache. As has been established, 'taches are worshipped in Toadstool culture, so only the very highest echelons of society are allowed them. It's why Toads adore Mario.

I don't know why, but I find this so cool. I think we should try this. The person with the most epic moustache gets to be leader. Girls, stop plucking that facial hair now, if you ever want to be President.

I never bothered to think of Toad in gender terms, but now that it's been brought up, they just adopt whatever gender characteristics they dig better, and everyone else just rolls along with it?

That's lovely, actually.

Yeah, I'm a fan of this.

That's cute as hell :3

Maybe they have no biological sex, but can choose/develop whatever gender they want.
Possibly as they were culturally assimilating and interpreting gendered cultures/species that they were living around.

Makes sense to me!

He is?

That seems pretty decisive if you ask me. Calling him both "he" and a "fellow."

They're male and female. DUH!
