Nintendo Switch launches with 330,637 units in Japan

Good launch numbers. About what I think was expected, and it seems like they sold through pretty much the whole first shipment. Hopefully they're prepared to get more stock to Japan in a timely manner.

So a few million units globally by the end of the week?

I guessing they probably moved around 1 million units first few days world wide. That leaves them another million or so for additional shipments this month. They launched a lot earlier then what we were all expecting when they said 2 million units for launch.

Maybe it's different in Japan but has anyone else felt like this was a pretty soft launch from Nintendo in the rest of the world? It hardly feels like a new system just launched

Demand seems incredibly strong in Japan and the US.

Less so in Europe. No idea what the situation in the rest of Asia / Australia looks like

None of the stores by me even set up Switch sections but I guess it wouldn't have mattered cause it's all sold out.

I don't know. The system is incredibly hard to find in the U.S. I don't know what we are looking at with a second shipment or when though.....

I heard stock is more available in Europe/Australia though.

nintendo isn't even planning to make that many. they're aiming to have shipped 10m worldwide by the end of next march.

a successful switch will probably get to 4.5-5m in the us in that time though.

Source?

good question! just one of those things i heard and i can't find anything that's a source to back it up.

It's unlikely (impossible) that Nintendo made publicly available their forecast for the next fiscal year before the current one has ended.

The 10 million figure extrapolated from information from Wall Street Journal(WSJ) stating that Japan Display Inc. is the sole producer for the Switch's 720p screen. According to this source that summarizes the WSJ 3 million for the first batch and 10 million for the end of the year. The article is behind a paywall.

Wall Street Journal said:
TOKYO—If Nintendo Co. finds success with its videogame console, Switch, it could brighten the future not only of Nintendo but also of Japan Display Inc., a struggling display maker that won the contract to make the Switch's screens.

People familiar with the matter said Nintendo picked Japan Display as the exclusive supplier of the Switch's 6.2-inch touch-sensitive liquid-crystal display. The Switch, which can be used both as a stationary console and a hand-held player on the go, is to go on sale globally March 3.

The contract calls for Japan Display to supply three million screens in an initial batch, and the company is gearing up to ship slightly more than 10 million units by the end of this year, the people said. However, the latter figure is subject to change depending on sales, they said. Spokesmen for Nintendo and JDI declined to comment.

Nintendo has said it would ship two million Switch units in its first month on the market.

People familiar with the deal said it probably wouldn't contribute much to JDI's profit, at least initially. The company's fortunes remain tied to smartphone makers, including Apple Inc., that buy more expensive display panels in far-larger quantities.

It'll be really interesting to see how sales (and supply) go over the next few months. I imagine the next big burst of sales will come when Splatoon 2 launches in the summer. If Pokémon is indeed coming as well, then that should be the third boom in the fall. Nintendo is probably hoping that ARMS and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be enough to sustain momentum.

Don't forget Mario Odyssey in November.

It's so much cheaper in japan than Europe too.
32000ÂĄ~ (after tax) is about 265 euros at current exchange.
Essencially 65 euros cheaper, it's almost a full 3ds panic mode price cut cheaper.
Even the games are cheaper compared to European msrp.

It's freakin March, holiday 2017 will be most interesting!

March is a great time to sell a new product in this country though. It's the end of graduation for college age people, end of the school year for elementary-high school students, and the beginning of the new school year. Decent time for parents who want to reward their kids for a good school year/the kids who still have not blown all their new years money.

A few of my students have said they are waiting for their parents to give them their switch in a week lol. Sadly the area I live in is a bit poor so a lot are making do with their Wii U's til a price drop I'm sure.

That's pretty good from Japan given the launch line-up.

The Switch software line-up was clearly conceived with the Western hemisphere in mind.

There's bound to be a strong drop-off there, but I assume Nintendo will ramp up marketing expenses when MK8 & Spla2oon launched.

For a better look on these numbers, I wish stores limited these for 1 per customer, instead of having one person buying the whole store stock and have it rot in his "store".

About the qualifier...PS4's (slightly more successful) launch was also outside the holiday season in Japan, was it not? February 2014.

The joycons have no sync problems, it's the americans hands that are too big...

Seems like a compliment.

Nintendo isn't the only company that deals with scalpers at launch.

They actually increased the production a little over a month ago, so no, they plan to sell more than 10 million in the first 12 months.

Well for starters, KFC in Japan is marginally superior to American KFC.

It is? God damn, KFC is shit in Japan, can't imagine how horrible it is in the U.S.
The chicken is so dry and flavourless. Lawson friend chicken is so much better. Lawson. Ridiculous.

Zelda first week sales:

OoT (LTD ONLY): 1,143,570
MM (LTD ONLY): 601,542
WW: 287,346 (LTD: 742,609)
FSA: 54,782 (LTD: 127,399)
MC: 92,882 (LTD: 235,400)
TP (Wii): 145,068 (LTD: 552,476)
PH: 288,282 (LTD: 902,386)
ST: 320,940 (LTD: 725,904)
SS: 194,894 (LTD: 297,441, yeeeeesh)
ALBW: 224,143 (LTD: no idea, but 2.51million worldwide as of May 2014)

So besides the DS Zeldas and arguably ALBW though I don't know what it's LTD sales are, the franchise really hasn't done that great in Japan recently. The last console Zelda to really pop was Wind Waker.

Forgot how terrible Skyward Swords legs were. Hopefully BotW will have good legs.

Skyward Sword was basically sent to die with the state of the Wii at the time. They should consider giving it the WindWaker HD approach. Revamp some of the stuff people had issue with and release a nice HD port of the game.

These numbers are quite promising. If all goes well it might exceed my predictions for the first 24 days.
