Nintendo Switch: My 3 big questions

Im very excited at the Switch. Cant wait for january to see more. But i got some questions about it, well, they all kind of make me a bit worried, but let say just a little.

Durability of the tablet: Well its simple. How durable is the tablet? I mean, you drop it once, will it do like a ipad and crack the screen? I just hope it wont break easily.

Hardware upgradable: The power come from the tablet, the dock is just use to display. Does that open a door of hardware upgrade and release in the futur the Switch 2, kind of like a hardware upgrade? The tablet could be sold separatly, costing less to upgrade, i mean, im pretty sure they tough about it when creating this machine no?

Catch another audience: Sure we saw all great titles that make Nintendo fan buy their hardware. Im one of them. But what about games, exclusive third part titles? As example, a Bloodborne 2 release from From Software, that could bring another audience to the Switch no? Cause just seeing a nba game and skyrim game really didnt make me thing its something that will make you buy the switch just for those two.

So that about it, my concern. I just wish its not going to be another Wii U for outside support. I love Nintendo games, but i need my machine to be able to get all other third party games sony and xbox got. I just hope companies are all in with the Switch.

We'll find out in January for the last 2 points. As for the first one, it'll probably be as durable as most tablets. Though putting a case on it may be difficult because of the dock.

Bloodborne is a Sony exclusive franchise.
Instead of a FROM exclusive I'd imagine they'll keep working with PG.
as for durability, Nintendo's usually good with that. I imagine if you drop it you might bust up the Joy Cons but they *should* keep the main unit safe.
Hardware upgrade is possible much like the PlayStation Pro or the yearly iPhone updates. Don't think the dock costs much to justify axing its inclusion.

Just buy an PS4 or XB1 at this point. Switch isn't going to get any good 3rd party support.

I'm super glad you shared those questions we can't possibly answer until January, at the earliest.

Until then, my answer: ÂŻ\_(ツ)_/ÂŻ

How are we supposed to know that?
😡

Nobody really know anything. Its just question i hope well know the answer sooon. Im concerned about durability, having to upgrade every two years, and hope to see great third party support.

I'm curious too but this doesn't really need its own thread, this website isn't your blog.

About the durability: The Switch has a huge bezel. That's certainly not something Nintendo included for no reason, especially since they have looked into free-form displays and at least considered using them. I'd imagine that the Switch will be a bit more durable than most tablets. Also consider that the device is most likely to be dropped when the controllers are attached, and the controllers are likely to absorb some of the force of any drop in that situation.

I don't think it's kids toy.

If you are worried about durability buy a screen protector and silicone body armor.

1. It's a tablet with the 2 joycons on the sides. It will be as durable as your everyday tablet.

2. All of this will have to wait until January 12 (TBH if this thing is designed with hardware upgrades/mid-gen iterations in mind, I doubt you'll here it there too), as don't even know what the dock does. As of now, the tab itself is 6.2" 720p multi touch capacitive going off insiders. Rest of the specs like the RAM amount and what iteration of Tegra is under the hood, is better left to the reveal event.

3. Bloodborne was created by SCE Japan and is a SONY IP. Yoshida suggested that they collaborated with a third party studio like From Software and let Miyazaki lead the project. This would bring in both positive PR and eventually lead to more units moved. There wouldn't have been a Bloodborne without the original team (SCEJ) and SONY funding it, not in a million years if it were just FromSoft/Bamco alone.

Coming to your point on 3rd party exclusivity though, you can bank on it. It's Nintendo. BG&E 2, Bayo 3, Capcom X Nintendo etc are some of the already rumored titles. The point is not just 3rd party exclusives, but mainstream (existing & upcoming) multiplat AAA titles releasing on the Switch alongside PS4/X1, more than the first 2 years of the console's lifecycle. A generation of support like the Wii/NES/SNES, or tbh, even the GCN to an extent. So far, showing Skyrim and NBA doesn't really bolster that faith. Though I've been burned before, I'd like to believe that they're saving up everything for the full reveal event in January.

We've dropped our Wii U GamePad many times and somehow it still works. It's not a far drop but it's still a drop. Hopefully the Switch will be at least as durable.

iwas wondering how the battery last in the long run constant charging etc. hope we can change the battery.

The big question should be, has Nintendo figured out how to create a modern interface/infrastructure?

If this system doesn't have party chat, makes me mess around with friend codes and doesn't utilize cloud saves they can go to hell.

During the trailer there was a lot of 2-button gaming happening (maybe 3 button, same as sideways wii-mote)...

How viable would that actually be?

Mario Kart, sure... but a basketball game? Not likely.

Durability isn't something a company would ever comment on.

It's just something we'll find out during the console's life.

Good chance Switch will be upgradeable, remember this is the same Nintendo that only sold higher capacity WiiU gamepad batteries in japan.

Yeah, they did include it for absolutely no reason. Nintendo has never been one to release cutting edge hardware. They haven't even released anything with a screen resolution over standard definition. The Switch is rumored to be 720p. The best they could do is make the Wii U controller standard def at 16:9. It's a joke. Seriously.

Nintendo is trying to make this a race to the bottom.

Question 1 ....if you look at smartphones and tablets...it could be just as fragile. I have dropped majority screen devices numerous times with no problems. And some I've dropped a few times and had major damage.

Question 2...this is actually a good question.

Question 3....IIRC damn near every Nintendo console has had exclusive 3rd party games. That wont stop with the Switch.

It worked out ok with the Wii. But hasnt been good overall since the NES days as far as bringing a new audience.

Nobody really know anything. Its just question i hope well know the answer sooon. Im concerned about durability, having to upgrade every two years, and hope to see great third party support.

Bad news pal. It's going to crack when you drop it, when your kids get a hold of it, bad things happen to tablets that you travel with. Let's not even talk about how many of the Joy-Con controllers you are going to be replacing when they get lost.

Of COURSE Nintendo is going to make you upgrade it constantly. Look at the GameBoy, Gameboy Advance, and the DS, oh and the 3DS. The SP, the Micro, the Lite, the XL, the DSi, etc etc. Oh and let's not forget special editions! Oh my god the Zelda Switch, and the Pokemon Switch, and Mario Switch and the NEW Switch that two games support. Yeah. While Nintendo's home consoles have largely been shielded from this practice, there have been revisions, special colors, and the like. It's going to happen.

You're going to be buying lots of them.

Just ask around, how many people on here have SEVERAL 3DS'? Anecdotal: I personally know someone who has five (5) 3DS'.

And there will be, once again, almost no third party support. You don't buy Nintendo consoles for 3rd party support. I say, laughingly, that that might change slightly this time around because of the draw of being a home console with portable functionality. And yes, it's a home console that you can take with you, since some people here were still unclear about that.

Let's just nail down some very, very realistic expectations.

It'll be somewhere between the Wii U and XB1 power wise when docked.
It will very likely be downclocked when not docked, as evidenced by some real choppy footage*
It'll break. The front looks like all glass (capacitive multitouch), and those bezels are thin. The core of the unit (minus joy-con) is probably pretty hefty. When this thing hits the ground, you're going to wince, and that screen is going to crack. This is just going to happen.
You're going to have a handful of "console exclusive" games from "unprecedented partnerships" like Ubisoft and EA, and then a few years later, those games will find themselves on other platforms. Unless Nintendo themselves is footing the bill, and I don't think they're going to do that every time, I'm looking at you, Bayonetta. Zombi U found a way. It'll happen. Then it'll be up to Mario & pals to keep the dream alive.

I'm not saying the Switch will be bad. It might even be better than bad, it might be good.**
That being said, this isn't going to reignite the Wiivolution. It's going to be a Nintendo games machine. Major developers are going to be focusing on PS4Pro and Scorpio games in 2017 and beyond. Games that look great on a 4K TV are what drive sales.

There've been a lot of "maybe" and "can't say for the future" as far as third party support goes.

I'll get one when there's a game I absolutely can't live without, and I can't play on another platform that I don't already own comes out.
MH5 GIVE IT TO ME

Nintendo's newest machine is a fucking tablet with controller attachments. The writing is on the wall.

*I appreciate that the footage we have seen was from a game still in development.

What? No it doesn't. Look at deze pics.
The Switch's crackable, delicate, glass screen has a very narrow plastic bezel around the edge. There's just a large gap between the edge of the system and where the LCD actually starts, UNDER the glass.

The Bloodborne IP is owned by Sony, not From Software. So, a Bloodborne game will never ever be on a Nintendo or Microsoft platform.

Well it was an example. If Nintendo could bring partnership with From to create their own 'soul' game, im just going to be amazed. it need to happen, to get a new audience.

And just like with phones I dont understand this obsession with thinner bezels.

More screen real estate at the expense of durability? Give me more bezel.

Just throwing it out there, said developers are still gonna have to support the base models of the PS4 & XB1.

1) Probably about as durable as a regular tablet. Granted, I don't know how durable that is because I'm not in the habit of dropping my expensive shit on the ground.

2) Completely unknown.

3) Yes, it will have 3rd party exclusives as every Nintendo console has. No, it won't attract a new audience. It will just cause catastrophic meltdowns and no one will buy it anyway.

All hail the Holy month of January, where all your prayers will be answered and dreams will come true in our beloved and Holy Tokyo Big Sight.

1 will probably be fine. Nintendo have been known to test hardware durability by throwing them out of buildings.

OP, weren't you in the "selling my PC for a PS4 Pro, am I crazy?" thread talking about how you sold your PS4 due to the mid gen upgrades, and now you're saying how badly you want 3rd party support for the Switch? Sorry if I have you mistaken for someone else, but if so then it seems like your priorities are screwed up(or something's off).

I'm curious too but this doesn't really need its own thread, this website isn't your blog.

Lots of users need to realize this.

Q.1 I don't know and I don't expect to find out until after launch

Q.2 If Nintendo are using USB-C 3.1 on the bottom of the unit as speculated then yes, they could theoretically release a new dock down the road that could house a better GPU and more ports kinda of like this but in dock form:

maxresdefault.jpg

Q.3 The Switch is rumored to be around 10%-20% less powerful than the XB1 which is impressive for a handheld but this will limit 3rd parties from porting major titles (ie, RDR2) unless the Switch has Wii levels of success then in that case 3rd parties will force their games on the Switch no matter what like they did with the Wii. AFAIK Sony owns all rights to the Bloodborne IP so there would be as much of a chance of Bloodborne coming to the Switch as there would be Mario coming to the PS4.

And where mid gen upgrade goes with 3rd partty support? Have you read that im wishing that the Switch is upgradable? Its where i am worried. If the expectation of the Switch is to upgrade your tablet one in a while, i wont be happy with it. I was poiting out that Nintendo tough about it when building the machine and thought they could upgrade their switch as they wish.

Don't expect that please.

The best to expect is about 1/2 Xbox One performance if there is a full clock docked mode, but games will be developed with the handheld performance in mind, so around 1/3 - 1/4 Xbox One. [resolution on handheld mode will be 720 so that will help a bit there though]

There is some room for debate, but 10-20% less than Xbox One? Not a chance in my opinion.
