Nintendo Switch Update Ver. 4.0.0 Live! Some video capture, transfer profiles/saves

From Reddit:

I did a quick video capture in Zelda while running in handheld mode, trimmed it a little, copied it to a microSD card, and took a look at exactly what it recorded.

(I uploaded my test video to Vimeo, here: https://vimeo.com/238864655)

It's an MP4 file, 1280x720 resolution, 30 fps, encoded as H.264, with AAC stereo audio at 48kHz. The bitrate is 4.38Mbit/s.

(Yeah, we could have guessed a bunch of that, but I figured it was worth actually just checking.)

Huh, this is a neat feature.

If you have a local wireless group, and someone's game isn't updated, then the update will be locally downloaded from the other Switches.

For Pokémon games, this basically enables new Pokémon being introduced via updates, since the games can now be forced to only trade/battle with players that have the same version. Just have the player with the latest update send the update to the other player, then boot up the game and start the trade.

This should solve the problem of Mythical Pokémon getting leaked at the very start of a generation, if Game Freak chooses to follow this solution.

People excited for this must not own a Xbox One or PS4, there is nothing exciting about this, its like being excited that i found the missing wheel on my bike, so now i can use it.
Pre purchage and pre download is also coming soon to select games, not activated, so half baked. But switch gets passes on frame rate, resolution, online, almost mandatory sd card buys, and now tiny updates.... whats new.

splat 2 capture

quality is pretty meh but whatever, at least I can document my splatoon shenanigans

I'm not sure I'd judge it based on twitter quality...another poster already said it recorded 720p/30fps in handheld mode and that definitely isn't 720p

People are excited about this because they own the Switch. No one is pretending this is anything new for gaming. Stop being so salty. It's a bad look

I’m so sorry you’re upset about other people being more happy with their product.

I assume video capture stuff will be part of the sdk going forward so games coming will support it.

I wonder how hard/easy it'll be for indie to do.

Yeh, I can use my PS4 and Xbox to capture video on my Switch.

Posted before, but yeah, my old screenshots from my previous Switch just appeared in my new Switch's album. I'm using the same SD card from that first Switch and I'm 100% sure that those pictures weren't there before!

Awesome that I get to have them again!
I "formatted" my sd card through the switch and had the same thing happen, but I think the pictures are partitioned outside of the rest of the files.

Everything's a damn pissing match for some of you.

I have other consoles.

Still pretty excited to have this on my portable console, which the others are not

Some things can continue to be patched and added to further be improved on switch, on the other hand, portability is not something you can patch and make my ps4 do lol

you could say the same about people who were excited about it with ps4 and xbox1 must've never owned PCs. The fact is, it's new to those ecosystems and people are allowed to be excited about it. The switch is 1/10th the size of those systems, so yeah compromises are made and people are obviously ok with it. it's fine to not agree, but don't make it seem like it's a crime to be excited about something because you're not.

For the record, I have a high-end gaming PC and I’m excited for this because I will get to (I assume) record gameplay from Super Mario Odyssey and share with Facebook, something I can’t do on a PC, or atleast not as easy.

Congratulations on fixing your bike, man.

To bad we didn’t get an update for photos. Would love the ability to take screenshots that aren’t compressed to shit with Mario around the corner.

Can't believe we still didn't get a save backup feature. Transferring to another Switch is pretty pointless if your Switch died. C'mon Nintendo, this is getting ridiculous.

I mean, Switch's picture-taking ability is superior to my PS4 Pro, so I thought maybe they could manage at least a few minutes of video capture

I'm not sure the switch really has enough available memory (either RAM or storage) to keep that amount of data around constantly.

I was just about to say this. This is the most important update that's absolutely necessary and people celebrating Nintendo in the 1st page. Like what the fuck? Lol...

I think limited might be the better word. If a couple have 1 Switch and end up getting 2, this would be useful. But yes, cloud saves would be better.

Edit: Read again, yes, it would be useless if the Switch died.
