Nintendo talks Miiverse, a gamers version of Facebook?

If I'll have to fake my country in order to be able to buy a fucking game on eShop like on Wii and 3DS, it's going to be automatically broken for me, so no thanks Nintendo.

Like I said in my other thread, the message board system to me, from a Japanese perspective, sounds like Nintendo's own version of 2channel or 2chan or something like that.

I'm hoping the 'friend codes' are like a blizzard ID. You have your username, and then a string of four numbers that are only used for adding you as a friend.

Considering how much I use Swapnote (multiple times daily), Miiverse sounds extremely compelling to me. I just hope it lives up to its promise.

Sounds relatively ambitious, but ambition without execution is pointless.

(Also, I may be somewhat alone in this, but when I'm playing a single player game I don't really want people distracting me.)

I don't get how a single system friend code, like the 3DS, is any worse than having to enter someone's username to add them on a friend's list. But people still complain about it.

Eh, I don't have enough faith in Nintendo on this one particular aspect for them to pull this off effectively. They would probably be better off teaming up with an existing social network and going from there.

Yeah, but mine is GJ and I can't tell my friends "add GJ on your 3DS so we can play Mario Kart". I have to boot up my 3DS if I have it with me, go to friends and give them my code, while they also need to have their 3DS with them where they can enter my code on. Then they'd have to read their codes which I have to enter. It's all so complicated. What's wrong with just a name? PSN and XBL seem to pull it off just fine.
You don't need friend codes to add friends locally on 3DS.

So, turn it off. You know there'll be an option. Miiverse comments: on/just friends/off.

I also have a hunch that even though there probably will be a friend code system at the core, you'll get to sync your account with Facebook. That way it can search your FB-friends list to see who else has a Wii U, and automatically invite them to your Miiverse.

If Nintendo could deal with the worst aspect of online gaming (expressive assholes) as promised, I'll be more that happy to use their console online.

Facebook is on a lot of platforms while Miiverse is on one.

Not really sure how they can talk about a comparison when it's obviously not going to happen. People won't use it for everyday social interactions if it's not accessible anywhere.

I suppose Facebook was only used because it's what everyone can relate to. Besides, it's Kotaku we are dealing with.

first of all miiverse is not supposed to replace facebook. it's just a more focused social network that is integrated in the wii u.
you won't be using it to ask your friends if their cats are feeling well, you'll be using to compare notes about a specific games, share user created content and screenshots and ask for advices.

second of all iwata himself confirmed that we will be able to access miiverse from any device with a web browser (ie: smartphones and pcs)

I don't think that's the point.

It's not a competitor for Facebook. It's a facebook-inspired system specifically for people who are playing Wii U games. You're on the system; you're playing already. So while you're there, you have a feed available from everyone else playing.

Based on the demonstration in the Nintendo Direct before E3 in which bits of the system were glimpsed on a Wii U controller, it's kind of like Steam's new game hub system in spirit - where you have a consolidated feed of what everyone else playing a game is saying or doing, to browse through.

So I think people are misleading themselves by assuming Iwata means they want to offer a competitor to Facebook. That's not what's happening here.

In point of fact, after Nintendo Direct, I had said "there's a great idea there, if this works out". It still looks like a great idea.

Oh, as for the question about "why are friends codes bad" upthread - here's the thing, that people keep forgetting. It's not the number really. It's the fact that you cannot send requests to add people to your list. They required everyone to manually exchange friends codes outside of their own network - to remove themselves from liability if a Strange Man begins messaging Little Timmy. The childsafe mentality (which IS a concern for Nintendo, be realistic here) clearly defined how Nintendo structured their online system.

With what they've said so far, it seems that Wii U will allow more normal friends requests or following people, albeit most likely with some stiff parental controls that can be engaged. And probably a million severe warnings when first setting up the console to try and get the attention of parents so that they turn off Timmy's ability to accept invites from strangers.

If Wii U allows people to send requests with some form of identification of who the request is from, then it won't matter much if the user ID is a number or a name - and as some people have said, technically a numerical system can be a lot better, as it allows users to set their own nickname without collisions between people with similar nicks in the system. In other words, you don't have to be Robert2848 - you have a unique number, and can just be Robert (or whatever) in terms of the displayed name.

I think you've got it backwards. Miiverse is specifically for Wii U and the games that support it. You're not supposed to use Miiverse to share the picture of your new dog. (But there'll probably be a Facebook app so you can do the social stuff on the GamePad as well, just not with Miiverse.) Miiverse is there to connect GAMERS that want to share thoughts and experiences directly related to the GAMES. Something you really can't do with FB and other networks. With Miiverse you're guaranteed that the comment or question you post is read by people who play the same game as you, and their comments and feedback will be completely tied to your own progression in the game. Pure genius, imo.

Yep.

Me: "Yay, I just killed Rathalos!"
Friend: "Great job! *emote*"

Me: "I can't seem to kill Deviljho! *emote*"
Friend: "Come join our party later tonight!"

I imagine it will be a lot of fun with the right games.

I dont wanna talk about vidjagames in my facebook

Friend codes can mean names you know?.
OK, if you actually take the time to read... What i got out of it was your friend code is your account number. Like most systems accounts are numerical but you associate your screen name with it... it means fewer people will have names like john1256431xbx1

edit: beaten like the dead horse

It's going to be pretty much only for super-hardcore Nintendo fans then, as I can't imagine normal people giving half a fuck about which bosses people are beating/struggling with. Even if you do start off caring, after fifty or so posts along those lines, I reckon it'll just become white noise; just another SpotPass/StreetPass gimmick that'll become irrelevant after the first couple of months.

It sounds great.

I just don't have a ton of faith they can pull it off.

I would like to be proved wrong.

They've shown video chat, I think it'd be badass if you could enable/disable the ability for friends to watch you play. For instance if I was playing AC3, my friend could "tune in" and just watch me, with voice chat enabled. This could be killer for getting help on stages, and would also be pretty fun for a lot of games. I've played single-player games with friends (taking turns) before, why not bring THAT to the online sphere?

If you have your friends and stuff online that you talk with everyday I dont see how itll just be a gimmick. If its just your mario machine then yea..

So what, this is like a visual representation of your friends list? "Miis gathered around game titles updating their status" sounds almost like your friends list from the 360 dashboard except they're all standing around next to each other instead of in a row.

This could be interesting if pulled off well, but I don't see how they can get people to "interact" with others while they're in the act of playing a game.

That's the complete opposite goal IMO. It's meant first and foremost to lure families who bought a wii based on the prescription of their Nintendo fan son, nephew, etc. It's getting relative people closer/together, and as such it's a killer feature, the 3rd Wii U main pillar after the GamePad and the dual screen set up.

This has serious potential. Looks very interesting. The ideas seem solid and definitely realistic in terms of being able to deliver.

By the way, I loved this quote. Got me genuinely enthused.

"What we really want to do is create a place where folks who are playing by themselves will not feel like they are playing by themselves."

But see, how do you do that without spamming their screens with messages about their friends? If I'm playing a single player game I'm not going to go out of my way to post status updates after every boss I beat. Unless you build it right into the game somehow I don't see how you can do this.

But then we're back to the question of why you'd want to talk and communicate with your friends through Nintendo's system rather than Facebook or Twitter or whatever? Especially if you're expected to stay entirely on the topic of Nintendo video games in the Miiverse.

Sounds disgusting. Shouldn't families be talking to each other, rather than just leaving each other notes on their game console?

Well we have seen that in NSMB U, at least, it is built into the game. And I've heard Ubisoft has plans for Miiverse integration in Zombi U.

If well integrated into games, this could be marvelous. It's like Dark Souls, conceptually.

The whole Nintendo joining in on the Internet revolution with social sites and memes

About time but it may be too late

But I look forward to the Miiverse, despite it not be a launch thing... which is imo stupid as hell

They will probably put features to turn it off and stuff like that.

There have been several articles recently on how gaming-oriented social graphs are far more effective than general purpose social graphs like Facebook, now that the Zynga fantasy is starting to wear off. Gree is a much better example of such thing than Facebook. For once, Nintendo seems do be doing something that approaches cutting edge.

Wait, what? I thought it was launch, with the 3DS and Smartphone apps coming later.

Edit: Iwata said at E3 that it would be available at launch.

Isn't it the system's OS or part of it.. how could it miss launch?

So the Miiverse idea has already been done by Vita.

Got it.

Thanks for clearing that up... coulda sworn that was either being delayed or some function of it wasn't going to be there right away
