Nintendo TVii Announced (System seller?)

I think it's a big deal. It all depends on the marketing though. If Nintendo can repeat Wii's fine marketing, this may become popular with the mainstream audience.

It's a valuable feature for a game console. While not likely to boost sales, it helps establish the device as a legitimate entertainment platform. Without it, WiiU may look less worthy beside other major living room platforms.

That's a notable upgrade considering they already have a majority of the console Netflix userbase. I wonder if MS will be inclined to remove the Gold paywall from Netflix
Nope

Can one watch Netflix (or other) videos on the gamepad alone or just choose what to watch on the big screen? (watched EU-thing, therefore don't know)

If that was possible, buying a Wii U would essentially buy your kid its own tv. A TV that still keeps the little one in the room with you.

That would be a great feature

Strangely, I think the TiVo interaction is what will NOT make it a system seller.

That is, they're working with existing DVR's. Why can't the Wii U just be the DVR? If I could plug in a USB hard drive to the Wii U, and have it capture OTA broadcasts, that would be a system seller for me.

The ability to watch your recorded TiVo stuff on it is awesome. Shit, I kinda wish I still had it rather than just the built-in DVR from TWC.

Wait, so this is just a media hub for your existing subscriptions, so you need to pay additional costs for whatever else you want to watch on it? Lame.

How does this work? Do you plug your coaxial cable connection into your Wii U and its able to stream your cable to the pad or is it just the usual services (Netflix, Hulu, etc) only?

$300 universal remote, no thanks.

MS will have something similar up their sleeve with Smartglass I'm sure.

In a year's time, every major cable company world wide will have a tablet app that does the exact same thing that NintendoTVii does on any mobile platform.

This isn't as amazing as it seems. It's a nice bonus. That's it.

The U Pad has universal TV remote features. So I imagine it just changes the Video Input, and puts it to the right channel.

If it works like Zeebox does, it communicates with your cable box via wifi, of it it's older, you can sync it similarly to a 3rd party remote control, then it searches for programming data via the internet.

will it play mkv? will it play mkv?

It doesn't play anything on its own.

It's an amalgamated guide to Netflix/Hulu/Amazon/Tivo and your TV channels. Those are the video sources, not media files elsewhere.

Good question above about how the TV channel side of things works, though.

People will underestimate this like they underestimated Netflix back then for the Wii

But seems to be US only, or what? :/

This may sound a little odd but I really think that Nintendo TVii has the potential to revolutionize how seniors watch TV, similar to how Wii Bowling was in nursing homes everywhere.

If there's a microphone in the GamePad and a senior can say "Wheel of Fortune" and have Wheel of Fortune pop up on the TV, this will save hundreds of nursing home workers trips back and forth for the remote and seniors from exacerbating their carpal tunnel.

This is not a sarcastic post by the way, I really think this could help a lot of people, aside from just being a cool take on the Smart Glass idea.

I'm down with it, despite no multitouch, the interface in itself will be an easier navigation than the current systems, especially PS3. Since I have Hulu plus and Netflix, browsing programs without switching between the two will be very very nice. Though I wish they would use the Controller's mic for Speech to Text on searching.

I don't think it's a system seller but the features you listed are really interesting and they certainly differentiate it from the other consoles. The Wii U will be a better living room console than the 360 with these features.

People have iPads for this, with a heck of lot more content including every single thing that Nintendo is showing off, but running at 1080p in many cases. The ABC Player on the iPad is amazing and looks a heck of lot better than this.

System Seller? Probably not. If Jeff Rigby and all sorts of documents, patents and what not are to be believed, he's been speculating a similar update to PS3 and 360 for years.

i have an ipad, but im not going to hook it up to the tv every time i want to watch videos, the consoles on the other hand are already connected.
my ipad is handy when im taking a shit tho.

If it can play recorded movies or tv station separate then what is on the tv it would be. Xbox does not combine all of this into one app it just has a thousands apps you have to launch. To say xbox live already has this same service for free much less at gold subscription cost is still false.

Am I missing something about what this is?

It seems to be merely a hub/portal for all the video apps you can use on your 360/ps3/phone/iPad?

*show everyone what you're watching, and update your thoughts to all your social networks instantaneously
This is why I hate FB and don't even have an account. People don't realize that they are loosing all their privacy.

I'm surprised they didn't partner with Logitech to integrate Harmony remote features. Maybe it would be too strong a competitor to Logitech's own universal remotes.

On TVii:
-Probably useless in Australia
-Probably won't control my media centre pc tuners
-If it could access and stream networked video it could be pretty good.
-Sports stuff looks pretty cool

That alone makes it better than the current solutions. Having one app with the others feeding in to it is a much better way of doing it.

You're allowed to say something nice about Nintendo. We won't judge you, and you won't melt.

This is going to come quite in handy for me. I'm all for it and I'm sure it's going a tempting feature for others. Might not be a system selling feature but it certainly won't hurt.
