Nintendo TVii Announced (System seller?)

It isn't going to make somebody with no interest buy the system, but it is definitely make that $350 premium edition seem more reasonable.

Not a huge tv Person but its cool for those who want it.

I miss the gaming industry that was just about VIDEO GAMES and none of this other nonsense.

I said in the past that if Nintendo wants to keep up with the competition they have to offer entertainment options. People just rolled their eyes but it's exactly what they are doing.
There is nothing between apple/google/sony/nintendo/ms that is JUST ABOUT GAMES. I think even the 3DS has Netflix.

This is a pretty nice surprise! The integration seems pretty good, but there are still a lot of questions that need to be answered. The signing in with your TV Provider's info gives me hope that it's just more than a TV input switch to watch live TV, I'm hoping it will be a TV input switch with the option to schedule recordings from the pad and perhaps scroll through my recorded list without interrupting whats playing live on the TV (my wife would love this!) Overall I'm excited how this is truly executed.

If Nintendo want to go for the jugular here, they really need to integrate Bluray playback into this. I think this could really sell the product to those on the fence, especially since their concerned with the Japanese market and 'not taking up space in the TV cabinet' thing they seemed to be waffling on about - two prodcuts into one.

The rep says its basically a remote for live cable tv, but can stream Hulu, amazon Netflix etc.

Just saw the Nintendo Direct portion of TVii. I must say, I'm quite pleasantly surprised Nintendo is on the ball on this one and not going 2 steps forward and 3 steps back.

More excited now that I know it has Cable/Satellite/Facebook/Twitter/IMDB/Wikipedia integration and actually timeline progression and posting (like the example they did with Modern Family).

Since this has Facebook integration, I wonder if Miiverse will too...

So watching the TVii trailer again it looks like the virtual remote on the Wii U LCD screen does have a power button. That seems to suggest you can control the power at least one device besides the Wii U. So that is interesting. It would have to control all my device like a harmony remote for it to be a system seller for me.

EDIT: Pic from the OP ( power button near the volume + button )

But being 100% honest, my wife would probably prefer this TV control scheme over our harmony remote so I probably would buy it for TVii :P

Won't know until we know every feature it has if it will be any good. This could easily lack key features it needs to work well enough though. In fact it most certainly will. If Google can't get it right and Apple won't even try I don't expect a technology behind company like Nintendo to get it right. Maybe Microsoft will do it. Right now there is essentially a zero percent chance that you will be able to schedule recording for anything that isn't Tivo. There are tons of other issues here that i'm tired of talking about. Been harping on them for a while now. Hopefully i can stop bitching about all these issues soon.

EDIT: I don't know how much perfection matters though when the original Wii did so well. Getting that guide off the TV and controlling inputs (hopefully in a simple way) goes a long way, so maybe they will succeed.

Shit I want this feature here in NZ. Even if they let me just stream my own collection through the interface it'd be nice.

Agreed. Not having a Blu-ray drive in this almost kills it as a "media center". Plus, the need for a separate DVR isn't terribly attractive.

That would be the last key feature for me ( assuming everything else worked perfectly which is a big assumption alone).

I agree. Supporting something like DLNA would be important.

Weren't there some numbers that showed a huge number of Wii owners used the system for streaming video?

If Netflix et all are big among the original Wii audience, it would make sense to push this angle of Wii U as a major feature.

Yep. Wii has over 50% of the console Netflix audience. This was definitely Nintendo capitalizing on that success. I can already see my family transitioning over to Wii U as their Netflix box.

For the record, they know how to use it for both Wii and 360, but the 360 usage stopped due to my brother's gamertag going silver.

System seller my ass... nothing about this is particular innovative or unique that other systems don't already have built in... even Smart TVs have things like this

but it's nice to have, but no need to dedicate a whole section to itself

Would that suggest I'd be able to use my Wii U in my dorm to access my family's cable?
It's probably only using that inputted cable data to figure out what shows are on right now so the interface knows when to show the TV option. The cable show isn't streamed through Wii U -- the Wii U acts like a universal remote to change the TV to the appropriate cable channel.

You'll still be able to use the streaming options like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Youtube.

I think the TVii feature is very well done and a welcome addition to the Wii. Our current Wii is the dedicated netflix box for our bedroom and I can guarantee my wife will love this. Once people see it working out in the wild I think it could be a system seller. The people who would buy it for this feature alone, probably wont know about it though.

Are we sure the live TV aspect isn't actually something much more simple? Like, you only input very general cable provider details (such as provider and zip code) simply so the U can download listings like a TV Guide iPhone app would or something like that? And that clicking "watch Modern Family on TV" just changes the TV or cable box channel? That was sort of my impression but I'm not clear. But the screen grabs, sports info, and other such integration could just be a separate app that uses the internet while the show is playing as normal.

EDIT: I agree with Mardak. I'm thinking more "universal remote" than some of the more complex theories.

In other words, different than Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, which will have the U processing the video content on its own.

As for being a system seller, no. But it's nice to have and if it's well done, it could spread word of mouth or at least make families more receptive to what else the U can do. Seems like a certain portion of the board here criticizes Nintendo whenever something similar has been done before instead of appreciating that the feature is there.

I'd like to see more than just NintendoTVii though. Hook up with Spotify, Pandora and Amazon MP3 for music (and allow more games to have custom soundtracks). And isn't there supposed to be a book reader? With the screen size, it could be a nice one. And I was actually a little surprised to not see "youtube" as part of the NintendoTVii interface. Must be tucked elsewhere? Then again, "sports" seemed out of place to me when really isn't that just a subset of TV?

I think it looks amazing. Especially for the lazy..lol

But will this work without the console on? I think I read that somewhere but not sure.

What I want is this...

A "quick toggle" button on the touch screen that switches from the tv station and back to the game you are playing (pausing when going to Tv, of course). Every time a commercial break comes up, switch to your game to get 2-3 minutes of game in. Ideally, there would be a picture in picture of the TV broadcast on the tablet, but I don't think thats possible without a video-in on the console.

That would be the last key feature for me ( assuming everything else worked perfectly which is a big assumption alone).

I agree. Supporting something like DLNA would be important.

Maybe the Plex guys need to get into making an App for Wii U. I could sell my Apple TV then.

This is surprisingly awesome, and not the type of functionality that I expected from Nintendo. Sure, they touched on this briefly at E3. However, after today's presentation, it's evident that they have invested some real effort in trying to integrate the TV and video services together into a simple, centralized interface. This is far beyond a simple "use your GamePad as a fancy-schmancy remote control", and puts a wealth of useful functionality at your fingertips.

Not a huge tv Person but its cool for those who want it.

I miss the gaming industry that was just about VIDEO GAMES and none of this other nonsense.

When was this exactly? When you could learn BASIC? When you could learn math? When you could edit videos? When you could make music? When you could paint? When you could print? When you could (almost) stitch Nintendo patterns? When you could write programs? When you could listen to CDs? When you could watch DVDs? When you could check your email?

Since the days of gaming computers to the earliest days of home consoles that got big, we've always been able to do more than just play games on them. It's never been just about video games, but luckily it still remains MOSTLY about video games. Don't believe that? For all that the Xbox 360 can do, I haven't spent more than 25 minutes using it except in regards to playing games... or getting updates/patches for games.

This is a good thing though. I know plenty of people who got a system for Netflix in the States or PS2 for a DVD player overall and then decided to get some games because "why not, I have this device" and joined in when before they wouldn't have.

This is pretty cool. I was thinking i could leave the controller in my bathroom so when I'm in there on the throne i'll watch/play something.

It could be a attractive feature for the wii u if marketed correctly.

*comment on portions of episodes and episodes and sports games on the fly, interacting with other people far away watching on their TVs
- I have GAF where I can comment about shows I like. Don't care about this feature in Vita as well.

*recommend episodes and tv shows to other people's tvs at the push of a button
- I don't care if other people enjoy what I enjoy or not. Don't care about this feature in Vita as well.

*show everyone what you're watching, and update your thoughts to all your social networks instantaneously
- Don't care about this feature in current consoles.

*use the Wii U Pad as the true universal DEVICE remote
- Maybe the only selling point, but the current medium of remotes are not annoying to me at all to make this investment to transition for Netflix.

There's a video were the person just taps on an icon and you can choose between seeing your Facebook feed, your Twitter feed or your Miiverse feed.

I want less social connectivity in my tv viewing, not more. Actually I don't want any of it whatsoever. Everytime some random dude's tweet comes up on my screen in the middle of my show, I judt stop watching. I did not make it past one episode of Deadliest Catch last season because of twitter spam all over my screen every 2 minutes. This shit is just pure fucking stupid. Not a single thing in OP's post sounds appealing to me.

When asked about a Verizon Fios DVR, this guy was clear to respond that "you'll be able to control your TiVo DVR, and any cable box." I.. don't think this is controlling any non-TiVo DVRs, guys. Which renders it effectively useless. I'm not gonna use one remote for normal watching, and another for watching my recordings.

Nah I think it's just a timed deal with TiVo, reps said on some demo videos that they will be announcing other partners as the Wii U gets closer to launch.

Remember this?

Was it replaced by Nintendo TVii?

Not entirely, as I understand it. The basic remote application would presumably still be accessible from the main menu in order to quickly turn on your TV or switch inputs before starting a game, without needing to enter the more complex TVii app.

I remember that stupid curtain they showed at the pre-E3 ND

they forgot to bring it back cuz they realized how stupid it was

His answer definitely was open to interpretation. I think you'll just have the gamepad as a universal remote, so you should still have "full" access to you dvr, it just won't be a nicely integrated to the gamepad like the TiVo feature. So you really shouldn't need a second remote.
