Nintendo: Wii U has "lost momentum" due to release schedule and miscommunication

I don't want them to go third party at all. They make some dumb mistakes, but I think they're far more consumer friendly than Microsoft. They're the type of company we need making game systems. Just a shame their leadership is fumbling so much.

Agreed. I still wish the Gamecube had performed better, they got a lot right with that hardware.

I just want to know who thought of the Wii U name and why these morons went ahead and approved it. It does not even take a business savvy person to know it's such an idiotic decision. What is wrong with you Nintendo? The Wii 2 was the obvious moniker to go with. It'd help at least in terms of getting the message out.

The other problem is that the gamepad is a shitty idea. Not as accessible or marketable as motion controls and the killer app that was Wii Sports. I think the problem here is that Kinect came along and ate their lunch. A sensible evolution from Wii would have been a Wii 2 system that had Kinect essentially built in. But obviously, MS kind of ruined all of that.

Their only hope for recovery is Japan now. They've pretty much screwed up elsewhere and don't stand much of a chance of competing unless something miraculous occurs.

I would not have even called it a Wii2. The whole concept of a second screen had nothing to do at all with the Wii.

I would have named it DS-HD or DSTVii - a console version of the DS line. The DS experience on your TV! It's basically what it is.

Not sure if it's been said yet, but bring these guys back.

The Wii U was not sufficiently differentiated from the original Wii in the eyes of the consumer. That ship has now sailed.

Nintendo needs a new system with a less esoteric name in the next 2 years that provides distinctly unique experiences in order to recapture hearts, minds, and the market. Call me crazy, but I think they'll do it.

"Wii would like to play..."

And then 2 other people show up and say

"Wii would like to play too..."

And then you see people from halfway across the earth in India also say

"Wii would like to play too..."

Experience the Wii like never before, this time with Mii Universe, be connected worldwide and play together.

Wii Too - The next generation console from Nintendo

You know if Nintendo decides to release another console, we will still be having the exact same conversion.

"Why did Nintendo not learn the lesson with Wii U.? Why did Nintendo not learn the lesson with Wii U?"

Does Nintendo really believe that Pikmin 3 will help the situation in any way?

I loved the first and the second one was quite good, but the franchise is far from a system seller.

That's a horrible idea. If you're going to tie a new product into an existing product with names, you have to be careful as it can backfire very easily. The DS has a strong brand name. The Wii had a strong brand name. There is absolutely no reason to abandon the Wii moniker and try and piggy back off the DS when it's its own entity and should be treated separately. Marketing isn't easy, and it's in your best interest to make it as easy and accessible as possible.

Wii 2 sends a clear message. It doesn't matter if it's not similar to the Wii. It sends a very clear and distinct message that this is the next iteration of the Wii. If you're not going to create that kind of distinction, then come up with a new name and treat it as a completely new product.

Going half the way never benefits anyone.

They don't really. Pikmin is a lesser franchise in terms of reputation than even Ratchet and Clank. It's not selling anything. But it's a Nintendo game, and I imagine they're counting on a stream of content that is steadily released to build momentum. And Pikmin just happens to be the first in the line. After they have 7 or 8 good quality games and some big names on the system, the value increases as a purchase. I imagine that's the effect they're going for.

Look, we have Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, Wii Fit U etc.

You know if Nintendo decides to release another console, we will still be having the exact same conversion.

"Why did Nintendo not learn the lesson with Wii U.? Why did Nintendo not learn the lesson with Wii U?"

Followed by 'wait for Mario 3D / Mario Kart / Zelda / Metroid'.

I'm not exactly sure the concept of the "system seller IP" is what actually sells consoles anymore. Community (what consoles are your friends playing on, so you can play with them) and library (It's not about one killer game, but having a lot of the best games) are what sell a system now.

Pikmin 3, Bayonetta, and Wonderful 101 are not going to move consoles. Heck, even NSMB failed to move the console. But it's getting all of these that make it a more attractive buy. It's all about value now.

"Why did Nintendo not learn the lesson with Wii U.? Why did Nintendo not learn the lesson with Wii U?"

Except in the case of the Wii U, they not only maintained the same fundamental issues of its predecessors but in addition to that created a set of new ones that never before existed.

Gamecube wouldn't have sold half as well as it did without Pikmin and its successor.

Wow what a clusterfuck the wii u has been. Everything that could have gone wrong has gone wrong.

-no 3rd parties
-ps4/720 are monsters spec wise with all the 3rd parties supporting them
-no 1st party games because of delays
-buggy and slow os
-shitty marketing
-shitty online service
-1 year headstart completely wasted

How does Iwata have a job again lol

Man.....things looks really bad when you think about it. Can't believe I bought this system day one. What was I thinking?

I think the name is something that's too late to change, personally. It was always obviously a bad idea (because there was no argument that it wasn't confusing people, because many people here on GAF couldn't figure out what the fuck it was, even if it was instantly obvious to me and others). It doesn't tell you anything about the system in the same way that 'Wii' did.

Any terrible name could have been made to work with the right marketing and brand design (IE, a much more different logo, say, and a much more different looking piece of hardware) but where 3DS was something they struggled to convey at first, this seems to be a problem that's hanging around.

because at least 3DS clearly demonstrated the USP, even if it didn't clearly tell you that it was a generational upgrade over previous DS hardware.

It's a moot point, but I think "Striim" would have gotten the message across that the product is both in the Wii family, but also new and different. That and a different console case.

I see your point and agree but naming it Wii again contradicts it in my POV. Having the Wii moniker is what's confusing people in the first place. Super Wii, Wii 2 or Wii U will cause the same confusion IMO. For me, the Wii is synonymous with Wii Sports and motion controls. You can't separate the name from the concept. It's what made the Wii brand.

I mainly meant under the hood - nice, powerful little box for it's price - but I disagree about the button layout. I loved it.

After 3DS and U I think the new lesson is don't buy Nintendo hardware at launch. You wait until Nintendo realizes they launched new hardware and scrambles to get games out. Takes about 8-12 months.

you're crazy. Gamecube was amazing. The only thing they messed up on was the disc capacity. Gamecube was proof enough that they are wasting their time trying to persuade most western developers to do anything. That's all the Cube was.

I came to enjoy it too. It was the only pad where I could do B+G and A+K attacks in Soul Calibur without having to use shoulder buttons and macros.

To all the people who want them to get rid of the pad, you realize without that it's just a slightly shittier XBox360 in terms of hardware and a massive joke in terms of infrastructure, right?

imho it was the right concept, just bad timing. Sony had the market on lock, don't underestimate how loyal many customers are, hell most of my friends bought a PS3 despite me telling them that's it's a piece of crap (with a great library). If they would've released something like a GC 2 now (meaning up to date hardware and easy to develop) they certainly would have more success because developers nowadays don't want exclusive titles anymore, they probably would've ported any game there is.

The Dreamcast is the single most over-rated piece of hardware in gaming history.

If you had Dreamcast games on 9/9/99 when everyone else was still playing an N64 or PSOne, you'd understand. The shit it was doing was insane at the time. Playing NFL 2k1 online the first time, Phantasy Star Online...shit man, I'm getting all nostalgic

No. Just...go back in time and play Phantasy Star Online during it's launch week. There was fucking magic in the air. Usually, you realize these things when they've gone away, but back then, I already knew. Dreamcast was fucking amazing.

Dreamcast was overrated and PS3 is a piece of crap? The Yankees? No wonder your friends ignore you.

I had insomnia on 9/8/99, because at 7am the next morning I was going to be playing Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure, House of the Dead 2, and a very close arcade port of Hydro Thunder. Quite possibly the best launch I'd ever experienced, and the system was only $199.

Even GAF were confused when Nintendo announced the Wii U, it was that fucked up.
Yup. I remember missing the reveal and trying to get the info second hand. I was utterly confused. Multiple core gamers told me it was a tablet for the TV.

They didn't even show the console itself the first time out. That's excusable for the PS4. But for the WiiU where the tablet is essentially its own device?

With THAT library?

Did you own a Dreamcast back in the days? Now THAT was a next-gen feeling coming from the N64 and PSX. The Dreamcast was like the perfect arcade console.

I grew up in the arcades man, this was like a dream coming true for me.

The library the Dreamcast had built up in such a short periode is nothing short of amazing.

No other console can claim this.

Yeah. I remember playing the Ready 2 Rumble demo and being amazed at the character oozing from the fighters, the expressions, the deformities, etc. It played like shit and in hindsight it has awful clipping issues, but at that time there was nothing like it.

The Dreamcast has been surpassed but at the time... Amazing.

Wrong. It's the most legendary along with the SNES, PSX and PS2.

You are certifiably insane. The Dreamcast didn't even have as good a library as the Saturn.

You had to be there.

I was there. Unusable ugly DC controller and all. Those triggers were the worst in history.

I grew up in the arcades too, and it was hardly the perfect arcade console. Marvel vs. Capcom was unplayable until I got a joystick, which pissed me off. I went back to the arcades to play Marvel vs. Capcom the same day.

That controller was and is an abomination.

The Wii U is looking like a Dreamcast 2 if they are not careful. :(

I'm actually kind of sad and disappointed that it has come to this point of frustration.

We need first party games atleast when the DC came out it had a ground breaking new Sonic game for the time... :(

The controller was uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time, granted, but the fact that it even had analog triggers and the VMU/Memory system was beyond its time. The DPad and face buttons were not nearly as horrible as what we've seen this generation.

And certainly not enough to discount the entire system.

Yeah, it was the future at the time. My buddy and I would play the online games together. One guy on the controller, the other on the keyboard trash talking. People would get pissed and wonder how I could type so fast while playing. Lol.
