Nintendo's Best Selling Games of 2010

I don't see Zelda SS outselling TP. That game was on two platforms, had wii launch hype. SS will come out after the Wii's peak, and will require a peripheral. Excessive motions are sure to turn some people off. The hype is just not there.
I'm not going to make any predictions about SS (I don't know what it'll do), I just want to pick apart your argument there.

- The Gamecube release of TP was intentionally limited to drive people to the Wii version. That version was released later and (iirc) available only online in Japan.

- Releasing at launch can help a game get attention, but it also limits its userbase. It's almost certain the SS will outsell TP in their respective first few months, the question is by how much and how strong will its legs be afterwards.

- That peripheral has been available for two years (by the time SS ships), has been shipped with every system for a year, has reached at least 26.35 million consoles with just Wii Sports Resort, and is now built into the standard controller. It won't be a major hurdle.

- Other than SMG2, is there any game in that list that had a substantial build up of hype? I pretty sure I've heard that same argument for all of those Wii games above. Hype (particularly GAF-Hype) means nothing (especially this far from release). Did you see how many people here claiming that they weren't feeling the same anticipation for Black-Ops like they had for Modern Warfare 2?

1 million for DQ9! Glad to see that game didn't totally bomb but now Nintendo needs to realize they should be bringing over other JRPG's...like Last Story and Xenoblade. C'mon Nintendo!

It's ironic that Nintendo's only major female protagonist (Peach is rarely playable) belongs to a franchise that is among the least embraced by females. To be honest, though, there isn't much that could be done about that without completely scrapping the Metroid look and atmosphere.

I was thinking Nintendo should make a Princess Peach 2d adventure game. I think there is one for the DS. That could be an easy 4 million + in sales.

Considering that Kirby has not been released in the EU yet , i think those are good numbers.
Just to be clear, you do realise the numbers will hardly change if the UK data on Kirby has any resemblance to how the franchise fares in the rest of Europe:

The following examples are all the best chart position closet to release (I'll to get to why in a sec as well as how flawed this is):
Nightmare in Dreamland? (release week)
Air Ride (note: week after release)
Amazing mirror never charted (note: We got this one months before America as well. It seemed NoEs experiment of "maybe Kirby will sell better if it isn't a fucking year late" failed)
Canvas Curse Power Paintbrush never charted
Squeak Squad Mouse Attack never charted (fun fact: In both the launch week of this and the previous one "King Kong: Official Game of the Movie" was in the chart, man that game had legs?)
Superstar Ultra never charted

I hate how the chart-track archives can't be searched with Google (I don't have time to check each week in case they bounce back or something)...as you can see they linger at the bottom of that format at best. A game not being in the chart /=/0 sales plus its true UK/=/Whole of Europe (isn't it 35% of the games market these days, a smaller percentage than a decade or two ago?) but its the only country I know of with a large pool of archived data. Would anyone in other parts of Europe like to comment on if Kirby sells great where they are and its just the UK who dislikes the pink blob.

I didn't even know these two were renamed. If I walked into a store and saw them, I'd be like "I never even heard of this". Maybe these really are kids' games and it doesn't matter that I'm out of touch, but I always felt Kirby was an all-ages thing, something that adults would appreciate maybe even moreso than children because it reminds them of the NES times.

Just speaking in general, in this day and age I find it incredibly short-sighted to rename a game for another [English speaking] territory. So much of the word of mouth and marketing that gives these games a longer tail of sales takes place on the internet now, and there is no continental segregation on the internet. That publishers still pretend as if there was seems backwards and antiquated. Pool all the hype together under the same name, and it can only get bigger.

Next step: timely worldwide releases.

I agree with you that M+ might not be an issue from a userbase standpoint. :P

Didnt the GC version add at least 1M sales? japan pretty much negligible for zelda compared to other territories. :P

Of course SS has hype, but the hype for TP was much much greater and far reaching. The Wii hype only added to it.

Sure the wii userbase is bigger now, but the people who want zelda probably bought a wii for TP at some point. Brawl outsold melee, but only by a few million for example, but a large userbase will not increase sales proportionately.

It is hard to factor in all the + and - effects. I guess we will have to wait and see. :)
If the game is great, I obviously would be happy to see it outsell TP.

By the end of March 2007, Twilight Princess was at 4.59 million GC+Wii combined. It is likely that DKCR will exceed that by March 2011.
Again, these are Nintendo published games only.
If memory serves me right the last known quantity for TP was 4.59M only for the Wii version, GC version was at 1.2+.

DCKR selling 5 million isn't surprising, what I'm wondering is if it can achieve the 10 million goal.
That would beat my expectation.
Time will tell.

Thought it was meant as a joke that they should do something "new". You probably know that Nintendo does not let them work on their own IP.
Star Tropic 3 bitches !!!

Fake edit:
Damn you Azure, damn you.

Good to see DK Returns doing well really liked that game.

Indeed, Fantastic game.

I think nowadays Retro is my favourite studio, I've yet to play a game they made that wasn't awesome (yes even MP2). Sorta like rare in their N64 days. But i would like to see what they can do if given free reign to make a new IP.

It's mindblowing how popular Mario Kart has become. It wasn't too long ago that people thought the series would be shelved after Double Dash.

Which is such a shame, considering Double Dash is the most innovative game in the series (excluding the first, obviously). Nothing has come close to matching co-op racing, particularly on a LAN. Shit is INTENSE.

There is a Japan/Other breakdown in Nintendo's PDF.

Mario Galaxy 2 has broken one million in Japan. Of the 5.1 million Wii Fit Plus shipped, only about 600k where the non-bundle version. And it looks like they only shipped about 1/2 million for N.A. and Europe each of Mario All-stars. Kirby's Epic Yarn is trailing what Super Star Ultra had shipped in a similar period by about 100k in N.A.

I imagine that Mario Sports Mix will be added to this list in their fiscal year-end report.
