Nintendo's next handheld will have multiple advantages the 3DS did not

OP is very optimistic. I'm expecting lower sales for next Nintendo handheld compared to 3DS.

This segment is in a downward spiral and nothing indicates a reversal.

I love portable consoles, and it'd be very, very unfortunate to see them go due to mobile taking over or whatever, so I'm going to be optimistic and side with the OP. I hope Nintendo can make enough of a commercial impact with its next portable console to justify a strong first and third party library, and give them their much needed success. Maybe they can even go back to the Game Boy name, if they're planning of getting rid of the dual screen-form factor.

"Sony won't be coming back with a Vita 2. I think we can take that to the bank"

Care to give me the name of your bank? I'd love to find one that accepts that.

I think if Sony goes back to the hand held space it will be with a tablet style system that supports a dual shock for controlling games that require one.

The OP keeps mentioning FIFA and Madden, but nothing about how Nintendo is now dead to EA.

I'd expect a FIFA game to be released on phones and tablets before it was released on the 4DS outside of the legacy rereleases/updates.

Ehhhh it's possible.

Based on where Nintendo's headed, its next handheld will probably be the first one with the controls and 3D capabilities EA deems necessary to run its 3D sports games. EA does still release Madden and FIFA on Vita after all.

It would probably be much better if Nintendo actually made the handheld with third party considerations in mind, ensuring ease of porting from other platforms, but we know Nintendo isn't about that.

They're almost there already, they just need to institute remote account management. Their next machines are being based around the iOS model so that probably gives us a pretty good idea of what to expect regarding accounts, software compatibility, cloud storage, etc.

I'll respectfully disagree. They have many things that were good for around the start of last generation, though.

Smartphone backlash..ahhahahahahahahhahaha

Wow. You post on GAF way too much if you think that is even close to being a reality.

Say what? Where does that 'fact' come from?
The fact that the Vita tanked so bad as a portable device that they had to make a home version that plays the same games...which I'm pretty sure also didn't do well.

I like my Vita, but let's be realistic here. What about the Vita's history leads you to believe that Sony will make another handheld?

Smartphone/tablet gaming backlash...hahahaha. Thanks for that laugh. Hilarious stuff. Almost as funny as the notion that people are now done buying new phones. Nintendo will continue to Nintendo, and that is to say they'll continue to make their usual slate of great games and also consistently fuck everything else up and lose more and more marketshare to smarter competition.

that really brings me down

what the fuck, Japan. MH4 was supposed to bury the Vita too. what you say is definitely gonna happen; pubs will continue to support Vita years later like the PSP before it

can I at least get one last handheld generation where I only have to buy one system that has everything before mobile eats up everything? cuz we all know mobile is the endgame for handhelds.

I own a Vita too. can't believe a system that has sold like shit will continue to get games. the fuck..

Agreed. You know certain devs will stick with Vita, maybe even when Sony pull the plug on it. Falcom, Compile Heart, and NIS will always take that route over Nintendo.

The Vita will have to be forgotten for them to jump ship, and even then, they might just stick with PS3 (if it's still active) and PS4.

Some however like a year ago felt like they'd have been in that boat as well like Gust and 5pb, but low and behold, they are indeed putting out a 3DS game for the first time, so it can happen. Ports, but still.

I can see 4DS taking in some IPs in the face of no PSP3, like God Eater if 4DS again has MH and pulls off huge numbers again, Toukiden might, especially with KT's relationship with Nintendo (might even be how Rorona is coming to 3DS). Tales... well... it depends on Hideo Baba. I'm actually VERY much expecting Vesperia to show up since Abyss did on 3DS, feels like the natural step to take I feel.

I think you're seriously underestimating the mobile gaming market and seriously overestimating third party desire to create handheld console games tbh.

I'm thinking the 3DS successor is likely going to struggle just as much out of the gate as the 3DS did.

I think if Sony goes back to the hand held space it will be with a tablet style system that supports a dual shock for controlling games that require one.

Between Remote Play coming to more devices and PlayStation Now, it makes me doubt that they'll ever do another dedicated gaming device of any kind.
