Nintendos software is incredibly Gordian for 2015

Nintendo being behind the times? A shocking truth, indeed
But yeah, A LOT of stuff Nintendo does is behind the times. Buying a New 3DS and doing a system transfer was a nightmare.

It does by it's very definition. If what had been said was "You are ignorant of the definition of this word" you may have a point but that's not what has been said here.

I'll play your little game.

ignorant
[ig-ner-uh nt]
Spell Syllables
Synonyms Examples Word Origin
adjective
1.
lacking in knowledge or training; unlearned:
an ignorant man.
2.
lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact:
ignorant of quantum physics.
3.
uninformed; unaware.
4.
due to or showing lack of knowledge or training:
an ignorant statement.

"Ignorance is a state of being uninformed"

---

If semantics is all you can cling to this is already over, though. You know what people mean. You know it's properly used. If you understand what people here mean (which you clearly do) and your only counterpoint to it is that it's a misuse of the word according to a very selective definition you posted you are already dead.

Byzantines.
latest

Thaaaaaaaats the stuff.

That people are bitching about the appropriate use of a word they don't know instead of looking it up, learning it and adding it to their vocabulary is both somehow shameful and depressingly expected in a world where few see the need for reading.

Thank you, and everyone else with a similar sentiment in here. This was pretty disheartening. If you don't know the word, ask politely, or look it up, rather than contributing to the circlejerk around how one is so high and mighty for using a word you don't see every day.

Sorry to see the mods contribute to the derailment as well. That's their job?

Oh, sorry. Sentiment means a view of or attitude toward a situation or event; an opinion., gaf.

In order for them to follow those definitions their context would have needed to be stated as such. Saying "you are ignorant" does not imply any definition except the first one. Saying you are ignorant of subject X implies definition 2.

Context is king.

Come on guys, complaining that his word usage is too obscure for you is the equivalent of thinking it's cool to pass on a 50% in high school and tearing down others to feel better about it.

Why not look it up and carry on? Heck, this being a forum means that you can look it up, carry on, and appear to have known the meaning all along for the rest of the discussion. Insta-cred. This is like that verssillimitude discussion from a while back all over again, which was also super dumb.

I disagree, I have a college education and have never seen the word used before in any capacity outside of this thread. In fact I would bet the English majors I know have probably never heard that word used in conversation.

Bad news: English major here, use the word when appropriate. Also saw it on a BoingBoing headline the other day. Told fiancée of its use in this thread and the subsequent reaction, she wept for humanity.

If your (not directed at you, specifically, bomblord) reaction to not knowing a word is to jeer and say "check out the big brain on Brett" instead of looking it up, it says more about you than the speaker, every time.

I don't mean to derail this thread, but here we go anyway.

When I saw Gordian in the title, my mind interpreted that as Gorean. Which left me really confused about what could be happening at Nintendo.

Byzantine's a perfect word to describe it, based on this definition:

"(of a system or situation) excessively complicated, typically involving a great deal of administrative detail."

The confirmation dialogues, the menus, the load times, the logins, the redirects, it's kind of brutal.

So you're just gonna ignore the fact that both definition one and three are plausible for this and stick to your guns? Gotcha, nice strategy.

This thread makes me sad. Dude came in with a legitimate topic to discuss and got dogpiled on because apparently half of GAF have never picked up a book. Doubly sad that the mods are just making it worse.

jeez, talk about No Merriment Sanctioned

I know a lot of people see it as just having fun, but it isn't always like that when you're the one posting a thread. I'm always very wary about making threads here, because I know there's a lot of smart people on GAF whom I respect, and I want to avoid looking foolish in front of them. If I'm posting a thread, it's because I'd really like to have a proper discussion about something with like-minded people.

So then having people ignore the content of your thread and make you feel like a fool for not limiting yourself to two-syllable words is kind of a bummer. I can remember making that same mistake back in high-school, and the fact that you can get almost the exact same reaction years later on a forum for adults is... well, sad.

Tbh, this gif is not really far off reality. If I used these big words when talking to my manager or my boss I would probably loss my job.

Yep. I was accused of plagiarism in college on one paper. The reason for the accusation was that the professor thought a college student is not capable of the writing used in the paper. I used some larger words my professor probably didn't know. I don't want to go through that again, so I now write like I did when I was 15. It kills my creativity, but it doesn't piss other people off.

Why not force him to prove the accusation of plagiarism? I would never debase my writing level to satisfy some nitwit professor.

Yes? Why not? If I've selected another app to launch, why would you not want it to suspend the state of the first one and launch the second one without having the confirmations? It's the other way I don't get. I've already selected a new app. That means I want the new app in RAM. That means it's free to boot the old app from RAM.

Some sub menus on 3DS can be opened while playing a game without having to close the game, like friend list(and I'm not sure which other ones). While any other app or game will have to close the current running game. Since it's a little inconsistent I'm glad there is warnings.

Oh and, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

I bought my lkttle girl a 2ds the other day for her birthday, she is over the moon with pokemon and mario kart.

Over the moon because SHE did not have to set the fucker up.

i had a headache afterwards, i made the fatal error of putting her real age in and having to set up a parent accountand yes i kept making a club nintendo account by mistake.. holy shit the ammount of times i had to type in security info in on that little shitty screen with those little shitty letters..

I would concur.
I recall a similar thread regarding the use of large words in off-topic that nettled me. Byzantine isn't particularly large, and the original poster used it in its correct context. Not to mention that it is the more concise option than "Nintendo's software is incredibly confusing and complicated to a great degree". There are jokes and quips about word choice, and then there is legitimate railing against the original poster. Certain people in this thread have done the latter in accusing the original poster of having some sort of notion that he or she is superior to them when using the first word that came to mind.

More on topic, I would also agree that at times Nintendo's software can be needlessly byzantine or complex or labyrinthine or Gordian. In having one of their systems for the better part of the decade, I suppose I have gotten accustomed to it.

Jesus Wept...

If I don't know a word I select it>>Search in Google. Bingo. Problem solved. It's not hard people. No need to take it as an insult.

I've known Byzantine as a word since I was a teenager. I didn't think it was particularly obscure.

I read a comment or two from people who claim they have gone to college but never encountered the word byzantine before. Is it wrong that my first thought was that they should have gone to a better school than Devry?
