No Fat Drake in Uncharted 4

Neil Druckmann, remember: Simply don't say anything at all about 'irrelevant stuff' like skins, your thoughts, personal opinions, etc.
Remember in the future. Just to 'save pains'.

So going by the quote in the opening post, it seems like the reason he cited pretty much amounts to "we don't want to offend anyone."

This is where we're at now. Something like Donut Drake is now deemed too politically incorrect to feature in a Naughty Dog game. Good grief.

Wow even ND is being PC. Sad ND just Sad.

This mentality is just fucked up. They say they don't want to make anyone feel bad about themselves and that makes them sad?

This push against people actually treating others nicely and not being an uncaring asshole is annoying as fuck. Being an asshoile and insulting isn't something that should be praised and outside of the internet it isn't.

why is playing with a fat guy skin, and doing jumps and climbing cliffs and all that stuff, making fun of fat people?

isnt the removal of something like that, them implying that only skinny, fit people can do the things drake does

its just a skin for a character, Naughty Dog just seems more and more that they just lost all the "Fun" they had

Sad, let drake have a donut and us have a laugh at a silly character. Hope this doesn't mean they won't have other Sony characters as DLC. playing as Cole or the combine was so cool.

It's deemed by who, though? Nobody said anything to them, it was their choice.
They played it safe, but it's not like there was rioting in the streets for Donut Drake.

Likely scenario is, if they did release the game with DD in, they would've gotten a blog post or two about it, maybe a bunch of tweets.

No one is an asshole or insulting anyone? WTF?

It's a fat character model. The world is a fucking boring place if we try to make sure no one is ever "upset" based on extremely unlikely scenarios or overly sensitive people.
If you're upset over a fat character model in a game, you're the one with issues.

You know, I kind of agree with Druckman.

I mean, it's one thing to have an obese character. But it's another thing to have an existing, established character turned fat for no in-story reason, but jokes. I'm sure it's innocent enough, but could come off as immature mocking of a body type.

Then again, we went through that NBA Jam big head mode era. I don't think anyone thought they were making fun of big-headed people. I guess that's just the world we live in now for better or worse. But I see no harm in ND not wanting any part of that anymore. Good on them for at least thinking of others.

This is a good a place as any to say that I appreciate the protagonist of Firewatch being a big chubby burly bear of a man, grabbing pinecombs and turtles with his meat hands, and it gels perfectly with the physique of my local hiking group.

This removal is such a shame because there are countless ways to include a beefier Drake without it coming across as mean-spirited. It's disappointing that the path of least resistance is to just homogenize it down and keep everything involving Drake as bland and boring as possible.

What is sad? The fact they didn't want to upset anyone? Sounds like they are being thoughtful tbh.

Assuming you do want to have intellectual discourse rather than just driveby "lol @ people outraged over outrage" sort of posting, and assuming that the reason this Donut Drake was cancelled is due to fear of "FAAAAT HAAAAAATE" backlash, the sad thing is that studios are driven to self-censorship even on good-natured humor by the very fear of backlash. People are arguing that there should be a line between considering feelings and creative freedom rather than going "oh some people might find this offensive so let's take this out" at every single thing.

No loss

The kind of people that would actually get a chuckle out of seeing a fat drake run around are the same the probably loved Duke nukem forever when it came out. Poop jokes.

It's 2016 and I think the medium has moved past big heads/limbs mode.

It doesn't have to be all serious at all, I expect a lot of one liners and jokes from Drake and sully. But time to elevate your game, stop going for low hanging fruit.

Just my 2 cents

it would be immature if the skin made the game unplayable, and made the character unnable to do the things in uncharted games, like running, jumping, climbing or any action deemed as physical effort, as it stands its just a skin for a character, nothing else

Sure. But the main character in firewatch is a heavier person done with tact. Proportions aren't cartoonish

Donut drake looks like a skinny artists caricature of what a fat person looks like

Like someone in a fat suit. Looks stupid

this is starting to become a stupid trend

as a fat person, i don't think anyone has been offended by fat drake except people like neil druckman who think they are being thoughtful amazing better than everyone people

LET ME BE FAT IN A VIDEO GAME

LET ME HAVE A FAT ASS IN A VIDEO GAME REEEEEEEEE

See that deal with it attitude? Selfish as fuck.

ND have said they don't want to upset anyone and it's removal is harmless, why would they want to keep it if they think someone will feel bad about it? There's absolutely nothing wrong with purposely not wanting to insult others.

People who think this world is too PC are just wilfully ignorant with movements like Gamergate existing and most online gaming communities just being cesspools of negativity

This is ND's decision and I find it curious that people are getting upset about it's removal but then go to the threads about censorship and protecting the artistic values of the devs games, why is nobody here protecting ND's right to make the game they want?

Why all the stupid taunts in MP then? How is that better than a Fat suit?
Even the basic function of a taunt is to make fun out of somebody.

They're exercising their own creative freedoms by not including it because it makes they themselves feel uncomfortable. lol

Well in this case it does seem to be Naughty Dog's decision, I mean there has never been outrage caused by Donut Drake in the previous games. If they couldn't find a way to include the skin in this game in a way that they comfortable with (Neil suggests they prototyped it in a number of ways) then they shouldn't have to include it.

Do they nerf fat drakes stats?

if not, i don't see how a guy being fat would offend anyone, especially if he's doing cool shit

Sure. There's a limit to how much I care about other people.

If you think a fat Drake is somehow problematic, I really have no sympathy for you. I'd rather have it in the game and have fun with it than care about your weird problems.

This isn't making fun of an opressed minority, it's not even making fun of fat people. Nothing about this decision is "mature".

No idea? Never wasted my time in multi-player in the uncharted games

I'd say those should go to but I won't be playing MP in uncharted 4 so I don't care?

I'm not even asking they remove donut drake at all. Just saying I respect Neil and teams vision and decision on this, I don't think its a loss

Gaming is boring.

The real fat cat minion from FFXIV lol

Is that fat cat a NeoGAF reference? (see colors)

Kind of weird considering they released a collection not 6 months ago where they added Donut Drake trophies with puns centered on "Fat and Furious".

Still funny how somehow this thread doesn't have the usual "but creative vision" and "critique = censorship" posts.

"Creative freedom"? The game devs chose not to include a fat joke. Nobody forced them.

You can't seriously whine about "creative freedom" because an artist made a creative decision you don't like.

Neil's reasoning is fine, even if I don't agree with it. It's the addition of "I thought we'd matured beyond that" that bothers me. It comes across as, well, pretentious--especially in a video game about taking human lives with little or no consequence.

How long before he changes the company name to something more mature? Naughty Dog? That's 80's immaturity at its finest. Might as well have named the company Porky's Software (Google Rings of Power).
