No Fat Drake in Uncharted 4

No studies of general behavioural can make universal principles that can apply to all phenomenon. Psychology and social sciences do not explain individual social phenomena to such accuracy, and nor does it seem to.

These tests can be designed for specific purposes or to broad theories of behaviour, but not every conclusion has 100% external validity.

Behaviour in practice is much more diverse and without controls than studies that are designed with many controlled variables.

There is also a lot to be said about how different cultures, and sub-cultures, and individuals within each of those, can react to the same inputs or pressures.

This is disappointing. I was really looking forward to his physics/animations with the Uncharted 4 engine. I hope they make up for it with another skin. Maybe a bear or something.

I know Naughty Dog is trying to be sensitive, but this is all I get from this decision:

UC3 didn't have him either. There was no boycott.

I have to admit it was pretty awesome seeing someone so heavy do all those acrobatics in the game, but on the other hand it was a bit cringey.

Err, UC3 doesn't really even count because it didn't have tweaks at all until the PS4 remaster. And said remaster includes Doughnut Drake skin as well as of other characters for the single player. While yes, Bluepoint is responsible for the remaster they had to have gone through Naughty Dog to make sure it was fine.

Was there some sort of statement about it, or did it happen quietly?

I for one am wondering if this would have even been a thing had nothing been said.

No, the game didn't have any tweaks/cheats/skins in the original PS3 release at all because of how rushed the game was. They rectified this issue with the PS4 remaster but then that was done by Bluepoint with Naughty Dog's approval (meaning it had to at least go through them once).

To be honest. Donut Drake was the sole reason I replayed Uncharted 2. I loved the story, but it was hilarious when Donut Drake was running away from the truck during chapter 5 of that game.

Rant time: MIGHT AS WELL TAKE AWAY THE TAUNTS FROM MULTIPLAYER TOO! HOW ABOUT NO CROUCH BUTTON AS WELL BECAUSE WE ARE SOOOOOOOO MATURE.

Rant over...

would buy if dlc tho

After reading most of the thread, I never realized how much people actually liked the Donut Drake character model. I see it up there with the big head mode that used to be in a lot of games. I don't really find it offensive, but understand their decision not to include it. If they had not said anything about it all I doubt people would be up in arms. Still, I think it is kind of silly that some people are not going to be buying the game over this.

There just being sarcastic such as "Pre-order cancelled."

As someone who's obese, the reasoning for this decision bothers me. Being this fat is a health issue. It is not something which should be glorified.

So should there also be crack-fiend Drake and alcoholic Drake to be used as a social model to ween people off other forms of self-abuse.

I think it's probably a mix of the humor not matching up with this game and their own decision to not actively insult people for laughs.

To include or not to include are both valid choices. Neil or whoever is responsible for Easter eggs decided to not put resources into this goofy joke at the expense of obese people.

Only skinny characters allowed in UC4 I guess. :( Can big people get some love, ND? Nice going, Druckmann. You stupid, dick!.

Awwww. :(
I'm obese. Like really obese. I look like Donut Drake. And while usually I play as females in video games anyway, it's sometimes nice to get to play as someone who looks like you, especially in multiplayer games. In SWTOR I was a lardass Jedi and it was glorious.
I'm sure some many people would be like "Hehe, look at the tubby Drake! Too many pies, Nathan!" But you know, whatever. It's not like you don't get used to that as a fatty anyway, especially if you're around children.

Oh well, their decision and I respect that.

The remaster was 4 years later, and I doubt they planned for it back then. The point is, I don't remember anyone saying they'd boycott the game which didn't have any tweaks, but now this of all things is a problem.

why are you calling him a dick? might as well blame everyone on the uncharted team if you're going to do that then.

"We actually had the whole thing modelled and in there," explains Druckmann, concluding that the team, "decided to make the call not to do it."

I can understand what he's talking about (even if I'm not sure if maturity is the right word) and I also think that unless they are doing something funny people shouldn't laugh at overweight characters/people (not that I can force people to not do that anyway if that's what they want to do and I know on gaf the majority of people seems to be fine with that), but I never really thinked about Donut Drake in that sense, in fact (as far as I can remember) almost nothing changed outside of his appearance. To me Donut Drake, besides maybe the name, is actually pretty awesome. Now if we talk about Rufus and the new Birdie...those are super annoying and retreated stereotyped characters imo. Of course an original good overweight character would be much better than a skin, and I hope it will happens in the future. Bill in TLOU was definitely a good start and I hope we would see more characters like him in the future.

I'd rather no representation over another "haha look doughnuts" character. Please.
I agree with you but in what way outside of his name is Donut Drake hilarious? The character itself is not hilarious imo.

....if only because I love large, chubby guys - it's a bummer to lose a representation of my ideal, in a medium I also love
:(
Next Bob in Tekken!
please Harada noooooo :(

They did this. It wasn't in response to pressure. Its their vision and they don't want it.

I'm okay with that.

I'm all for showing and having avatars of all body types, but to me, this model was mocking, was meant to be laughed at. "omg look at that giant huge man running and rolling and shooting" Again, my opinion.

I am fine with this.

I'm aware of your larger point I just wanted to make a correction to your statement. That said, the Doughnut Drake skin was still technically in UC3's original release via multiplayer anyway.

However, it seems like they probably treat MP as a separate entity in this regard otherwise the taunts wouldn't be so over the top and silly. And it's that very same reason why MP has those things and single player doesn't.

It'll be interesting if the Doughnut skins appear in MP at all this time around.

So we can shoot people in the face in this game, but we're stepping too far with a fat protagonist. Gaming industry.

UC3 didn't have him either. There was no boycott.

Uncharted 3 was lacking a LOT of extras which people were pretty let down by, all the cool little unlockables in Uncharted 1 and 2 made replaying the game fun because of the weapon cheats you could do, or skin changes, running around in beta versions of outfits, etc.

The devs don't think "lol fat people" is a very funny joke. That it's juvenile at best, and hurtful at worst. So they choose to omit it altogether.

"Pre order cancelled!!!!!!!!!!! Arrghgg!"

Aw, that's sad. I've always loved all the funny images of Donut Drake. It seems a lot of people loved him, too.

Like uncharted 3 didnt have that many unlockable cheats or filters either. They slowly backed away from having alot of fun stuff like that.

The MP of UC3 not only had Doughnut Drake, but a Doughnut version of every character.

Uncharted 3 didn't have them originally because they didn't have the time to add extras like that before launch.

That's legitimately disappointing.

Doughnut Drake was awesome, there was something mesmerising about seeing an overweight dude performing all these heroic feats and I was hoping for even more whacky skins like that. Uncharted isn't meant to be taken seriously it's a fun adventure. Was kinda afraid of this sorta nonsense with Neil and Bruce at the wheel.

I mean, by their reasoning they should be taking out half the taunts from MP....
