Once in a while you get these threads on GAF where the OP does something crazy or holds some insane opinion, and without fail, you will get someone posting the question "Is this an American thing?"
No, taking a shit while doing a handstand or putting shards of glass in your cereal or whatever are not an American thing. 99% of the time, common sense will tell you that not all Americans are raving lunatics, yet somehow you will always get someone asking the question.
What do you guys even think America is like, exactly? If even a fraction of the stuff that elicits that question were true, America would be a festering cesspool of maniacs running around the streets burning down buildings. America has a serious PR issue if this is how the rest of the world perceives it.
Then there's the opposite end of the spectrum, where someone will ask that question about something completely mundane that is actually prevalent in many other places around the world, revealing the person that asked the question to be completely clueless.
Of course there's the infamous "Do Americans clap after a meal?", but a Google search of "Is this an American thing" site:neogaf.com will turn up pages upon pages of this shit. Here are a few choice selections:
