Is whining an American thing?

Its an internet thing and the internet is owned by America™! Fuck Yeah!

So yes.

I like the threads thats about other countries that do horrible shit then some people from said country get horribly defensive saying "no we aren't all like that!". Congratulations you know what its like to be an American!

What absolutely is an american thing is being compared to everyone else. Though there are definitely a lot of stuff that is us such as our obesity problem mentioned a few posts up. We also have like, the greatest fucking burgers of all time. Everytime we eat a burger an eagle graces our presence.

I wish more news stories from other countries would get posted so that those of us from the US could say stupid shit like, "Wow, is this normal behavior in Egypt? I can't believe every person from that country acts like this!"

You Europeans get to have all the fun pretending to understand the US with every dumb headline you barely finish reading.

I wouldn't say that, USA GAF has been getting plenty of opportunity to laugh at Europe-GAF recently

Just look at Europe-GAF's pathetic sandwiches

This is true. No universal health care, a doctor's visit can bankrupt you for life just getting routine testing if you have no health insurance.

Tbh, we have NHS here and I put off doctor visits. Think it's common worldwide.

This is some hyperbole. A doctor won't see you unless they check you for insurance. Some will take Medicaid/Medicare and some don't. They will direct you to an emergency room or a free clinic if you don't qualify for any assistance or do free work which many doctors do. Ironically most of the medical bankruptcies are from people with health insurance with out of pocket expenses.

For emergencies that is different. Doctors don't just see you and then charge you a ridiculous bill they know most people can't afford for "routine testing".

He says 78% of people that file for medical bankruptcy had insurance.

There's a great deal of ignorance or willful ignorance about americans on this forum.

It's like any character quirk or personality oddity an american has can be attributed to all americans universally.

I guess it's a joke and everyone has fun with it but sometimes it seems kind of dumb. Like, is this actually funny or does everyone just assume americans are all the same?

I guess every country has its stereotypes.

They're just stereotypes and people having fun.

It's like they do with us

"British have bad teeth"

"British always drink tea and eat scones/crumpets"

That weird British voice people think we all have

When I was teaching English in Tokyo, the kids asked me if every American had a gun so I told them that we all keep it in our thigh like Robocop, but the latch is locked when we leave the country to keep others safe.

It's really not that deep

i was at comic-con in london and i saw this 'booth' where people were lining up for pictures. i asked what the context was since it was amusing and i have a very limited awareness of british culture. nope, no context needed. it is what it is, and not for some television show or reference in a film or book or anything.

Is systematic abuse and mistreatment of people of colour by law enforcement and free passes for killers of black people an american thing?

Are daily mass shootings and following unwillingness to change an american thing?

Is the support of the state of Israel that violates laws and mistreats the palestinian people an american thing?

Is drone striking innocents for the sake of maybe hitting someone guilty an american thing?

And is shaking the head about above issues and then shrugging because it's clearly not your fault but someone elses and there is nothing you could do a american thing? Clap, clap, Mr. resident of America.

Okay, tell me how I'm supposed to fix all those things. As an individual, how do I solve those problems, and do the same expectations apply to people in other countries to fix their problems?

It's the main reason why I don't browse or post on GAF much anymore. The threads are really frustrating and ignorant, and if the same type of assumptions were made about other countries the response would not be the same.

I pictured your face while you were writing this as:

When doing things, do Americans talk to themselves, like in unchartered games and movies?

And when the task is completed, you would start clapping and gimme fives?

Sadly, Iron Man 3 at the mall in Silver Springs. I guess on the bright side they weren't clapping for Iron Man 2..that's be too much..

That's a damn shame. The only time I've heard any real response as the end credits rolled was No Country for Old Men. There was a lot of people sighing because it didn't end the way I think they wanted it to.

That's funny. And nope. Folks just up and walked away for that one.

Never heard anyone clap at the end of a movie or when a plane landed.

I have literally only heard of this on NeoGAF. Lived in and visited numerous states. I think it's an inside joke we're just not getting. It started with someone saying they were visiting America and everyone at their table started clapping when a meal was finished - which almost sounds like an absurd part of a 4chan >me story.
