No Man's Sky - 18 minute uninterrupted gameplay demo

Exactly. True planet-sized planets wouldn't necessarily add anything to the gameplay at all. Maybe if each planet had a larger variety of resources, biomes, life forms and points of interests, then maybe something a bit larger might be nice. But as it is, it definitely seems as though you probably wont need to scour every inch of a planet to basically discover where there is to discover there. Which is ok. There's a lot of shit to explore out there and no need to spend too much time in one spot.

Won't the planets have "points of interest" spread all over their surfaces?

Does anybody else wish another outlet besides IGN had the exclusive month-long coverage?

Game Informer did a great job covering the game last December.

Hell, I think even Polygon could do a better job than IGN.

Pretty lazy video. Going over 5 planets in only two minutes shows me they just needed something to post today. Planets looked cool at least.

I bet IGN guys are feeling frustrated... dev is likely keeping things way too tight lipped and refusing to give too much away... forcing IGN to pretty much show the same level of content day after day...

I should watch that GameInformer 70 yes/no questions answered about No Man's Sky video... I actually stopped watching it pretty quickly cause I was worried they were saying TOO much...

here it is in case anyone is curious:

IGN is kind of at the mercy of what Hello Games provides them. I'm sure they'd love to show us 10 minutes of the game every day.

I agree. They might want to show off some of those to highlight that.

Or they could have just mentioned that lush planets would be more rare in the full game and said what the actual ratio was gonna be.

to recreate our universe but there are black holes, there are dead planets. Sometimes for demos we'll crank up the number of lush planets because we're trying to quickly show people. But actually in our universe, this one... most things are a little bit barren. Finding life is a big deal, a cool moment, and we want that in our game."

Murray admits that this has consistently been ramped up to show off the world, and that in the final game dead planets will be fairly common. Indeed, to enhance the feeling of discovery,

Its not necessarily about the video content shown, I just feel like they are not putting much effort in how they present the information.

To call there latest video a "tour" of 5 "new" planets is lazy and disingenuous.

Also, I find it strange that the video of IGN playing the game has not been released on the US site but was released on the Italian and Brazilian sites.

In early interviews they mentioned that about 10% of planets would potentially host life, but most of the recent footage makes the game seem like every solar system will have an exoplanet with life. If this reflects what the final game is like, the gaming community can piss the heck off for being closeminded and ruining what could have been an amazing and realistic space exploration game that gives you lots of incentive to explore.

This month's Game Informer lists NMS for release in 2015.

I've had December 4th as my guess with my friend. It's early enough before Christmas to get into the Christmas rush, and not too late to have been wasted in that period for other games. Athough Black Friday is just before it, marketing hype, pre-orders and limited editions will definitely feed from it.

Still going with December. I don't see why they'd be so cagey about release year at E3 unless they were planning for 2015 but faced a development hurdle that made them unsure, or had a deal with IGN to reveal it at the end of this whole thing.

Speaking of IGN, I hope there's more depth to the wanted level than shown or talked about do far. Would be kind of frustrating to be on a planet like that "tour" showed off when suddenly a large territorial beast attacks you, and you get a wanted level from these all seeing robots because of a defensive kill on a remote planet.

Some people have speculated that a release date for something big dropped (MGS maybe? I don't remember) which conflicted with their date, so they were backing off to reschedule or whatever.

Did I heard right ? On the GI interview videos, Sean said there will be no dlc ? I'm not a fan of dlc but I got a feeling this game would benefit from dlc/expansion ?

I'm expecting the game to be pretty basic at launch (which I don't mind) but it would be great if they add over the next few months/years following release some features and new stuff .

At the same time, he started that as long as people purchased the game and enjoyed it, that they would continue to support it by adding content and improvements

I think he means paid DLC. Horse armor or ship skins or whatnot.

August 4th is my crazy guess. Sean Murray had said in the past he was thinking about an " interesting release" and would give IGN an opportunity to finish their coverage with something huge.

If there are only a few bugs left and all the footage we're seeing is from his E3 build, the rest of the team has had some time to finish up.

99.9% chance it won't happen but I can dream.

That's reassuring because this game got so much potential to become something even greater if they keep supporting it and add features .

the game informer article specifically says:

"A solid release date is still unknown, but I'm hoping it's still on track for 2015."

so not confirming anything really.

lol and then wake up in a cold sweat

I dont get this "theory" that they are presenting us with a limited build so they dont spoil us.

I mean... If the procedural generation is as varied as they were saying (almost infinity) then they should not worry about limiting it during demos, cause we, while playing, would most certainly not even experience the same as they are while showing the game at a less then an hour presentation.

I really hope to be wrong, but I believe the game will be a huge dissappointment in that regard. Every planet they have shown is very similar to one another, from the vegetation to the creatures.

Well landing on a barren planet with basically nothing to do or see would make for a pretty poor 3 minute demonstration in front of millions of people. 90% of planets are devoid of life and I assume many devoid of interesting things like crashed freighters, ruins etc.

They've stated that there will be times when you're bored. Showing that off proudly might be something Sean Murray would love to do, but he no doubt realizes that many don't share his exact vision, or can't see the benefit having not played it, and has been advised against doing so.

Edit: I thought you were talking about life being present on everything they show and it being similar.

What's not to get? They've made it clear multiple times that they don't want to show off too much of the game before launch. That's very important to Sean.

It's already been confirmed that the build was edited in other ways

So it's far from inconceivable that they would cap off the type of creatures we'd see so we don't accidentally see something he'd want to be discovered when the game comes out. We're seeing the exact same creatures on complete different planets, and the hostile goat trend. If you want to be reeeallllyyy pessimistic about it, then you could assume that's an accurate representation of the variation we'll see in the full game I guess.

This is for sure the case. People are saying that Sean is being "tight-lipped" or he is censoring content. But this is the game and this is what your going to see in the full release.

It is mind-boggling to see people thinking that this game is going to generate different types of creatures for every planet. These creatures are going to look the same on each planet but maybe with a different set of horns or a different color. Same will go with plant life.

People are going to be very dissappointed if they think otherwise. I am not talking bad about this game. I know there will be gamers that will still love exploring the planets and fighting in space combat but I still think a lot of gamers are hyping of the "procedural generated" aspect of the game.

Except we already know this is bullshit. We've seen varied creatures, as have the press. The giant sand snake and the big dinosaur creatures to name a few.

Wow... thats what I call a defensive response.

I dont think I want to be "reeeallllyyy pessimistic", but I do prefer to keep my expectations in check so I do not end up swallowed by unrealistic hype, like I've seen here dozens of time.

I'm not saying the game WILL not be as varied as they've stated. I just dont think that "they dont want to spoil the game / surprises" for a game that is all about infinity possibilities and top notch procedural generation system is a logical explanation for what we've been observing.

I'm not saying the game is going to be super duper complex, but seeing the exact same group of creatures on completely different planets and hearing about them all in this E3 build clearly indicates that he capped it to some extent. We've seen much more variety presented to us in previous demos/trailers. This demo build is centered around the same creatures even when they're jumping to random planets that are star systems apart from each other. The cap is real.

Call it defensive if you like, but going from what we know and the evidence makes it pretty clear. Especially the hostile goat thing.

There's infinite variation, but still a finite number of base animals.

A small purple horse with spikes on it's back is a different species from a giant yellow horse with hair all over its body. They're both based off of the "horse" animation model, but they'll have different parts stuck on them, possibly different heads, and may act differently based on whether they're pack animals or based on their size.

We don't know how many different "base" animals there are, we just know that they're holding a bunch of the weirder types back until people see them in-game.

Edit: also what GribbleGrunger posted ^
