No Man's Sky gets released like, soon, I guess ¯\_()_/¯

Two questions.

1. How often do you expect to run into other players? The universe is a big place... I mean... aren't the odds of running into anyone exceptionally - almost microscopically - low?

2. The goal is to get to the center of the universe/galaxy, right? That's the point. Is that a realistic target? Will anyone ever accomplish that? Is there a reward if you do?

1. Given the size of universe , it's virtually impossible to meet someone. But, since the game is selling and will be selling well, there's a very, very, very, very slim chance xD

2. Yes. It's an end goal most people won't achieve, I think. But solving the mistery behind this universe requires you to do so. The game, for all we know, will incourage the player to do so (beacons and so on).

As for a reward...we don't know. It's very possible that from the center you could travel to other galaxies (since we know there are multiple).

I remember that Sean said "Each Star System has one thing you can do that can change the system forever" IIRC. I wonder if that's it? Like every time you warp to a new star, you're given a procedural objective to accomplish?
Wow, really? I never heard that. That sounds awesome

I rather liked it so /RASPBERRIES
I explored the hell out of all the planets in ME1. It didn't bother me at all that the planets, bases, and random ships out there were pretty much copy & paste. For me, the game accomplished enough of the feeling of exploring space and exploring distant alien worlds that the execution became more than the sum of its parts. The Mako exploration had a very Mars rover feeling about it, and at the time it was just something I'd never seen or done in a game before, certainly not a mainstream one. That's what I think the tragedy of ME2 and 3 are: They may have done a better job executing what they set out to do, but mechanically I found both to be far less interesting games because they just did what all the other games were doing.
This. This is the exact thing why I'm excited for NMS. I didn't even bother playing through the whole of ME1 or any of the sequels, but I sure as hell explored every inch of every planet. So my bar for NMS succeeding is it matching ME1 exploration with maybe a bit more variety to the planets and a Terraria-like progression system. That's all I'm expecting, everything else is gravy.

fake-edit:I really really really wish there is a Mako equivalent in the game, even on just one planet.

1: Dont' expect it

2: Sean says it'll take you around 40-100 hours of regular play to get there if you're pressing for it. And he says there's a means of "closure and new beginnings at the center"

Cool. Thank you for the replies!

I'm admittedly in the camp of folks that doesn't *get it.* Yes, I understand the concept and the goals - but from everything I see, the gameplay just seems very light and very repetitive. HOWEVER, I have it preordered and am very hopeful it blows me away. Always willing to give a game like this a fair shot.

Never played of Elite. Never heard of it until I started following the NMS threads here. If it's a PC game, my pc can't even run Minecraft on the lowest settings according to one of those can I run it sites. I had wanted to get Stardew Valley when it came out but was wary of getting a PC game since I know my PC is less than adequate. Talk about obnoxious though, can't even run Minecraft. My PC is bordering on four years old now so that might factor in to it. Apparently my dedicated video RAM is absolute crap.

However, as far as I can tell, the ships in view never change. Though it's possible it's just the video quality that's making me not see anything else come into view.
Minecraft isn't a good benchmark. It can even make a powerful rig chug

I have a mediocre non-gaming laptop and can play most indie games. Don't be afraid to try them out, especially since Steam has a refund policy now

And while Elite: Dangerous is recent, the original Elite that inspired Sean Murray came out in 1984

I'll have to keep that in mind in the future. Stardew Valley is coming to the PS4 after all so I may just end up getting it there.

But as far as Elite being an inspiration for this game since I know nothing of it, from the perspective of someone/anyone who has played it, is it a good choice of inspiration for NMS?

I think NMS could benefit from a behind the scenes making of game series that goes in-depth after the release of the game. I also think it would be fascinating.

But which is it? Maybe both? If it's a universe then it's kinda spoiling the endgame.
I know. Talk about the slightly contradicting messages. Oye. :) No matter how many times people say Sean said this or that, I can't help but remember that he said there weren't going to be NPC's in the game and that clearly changed down the line. So from my own personal perspective, I want to stick by what he said during most recent IGN 21 minutes video: you start at the edge of the universe, everyone starts at a different point on the edge, and the goal is to get to the bright light at the center. At this point, I also want to say it's a safe bet no one really knows. :D That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :)

I don't remember that specific statement, but I do remember him talking about blowing up space stations (or possibly a trade outpost) as irrevocably changing a particular system. It'd be a little odd if we only get one "mission" per system. If the mission structure exists, why not make more use of it?

Also yay new trailer! Can't wait for the not-potato-cam version.

Sean talks about Elite here. It's one of those games that made his childhood
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjKTJblJpw0&feature=youtu.be&t=580

Elite set the template for the space sim. Realistic scale of space, freeform gameplay, be a trader, pirate, fighter, etc.
Within the ‘80s space simulator is a comprehensive space explorer where you worked as a freelancer, taking on piracy and military jobs alike to get credits and upgrade your ship so you can keep flying. Sound familiar?
https://www.inverse.com/article/7327-the-movies-books-and-video-games-that-influenced-no-man-s-sky

Sean's basically making his dream game in No Man's Sky, finally being able to land on the planets he used to fly past in Elite

Not seen a single let down since this game got revealed. Now this leaked FIGHT trailer comes out and it just feels "off". If the first of the four trailers was a 5 this is a 2.

Yes, it is. Ran on a 32k PC made for the BBC, and basically invented the space combat/trading genre, using true 3D occluded vector graphics.

Did they say in a separate thread that it won't be an MMO but more like a servers type of things? I really don't expect meeting anyone beside friends on my friends list.

I want my first planet to either be a lush jungle with beautiful scenery or a hazardous dangerous wasteland where I have to venture and survive until i can get off the planet lol

The game is officially listed as single player everywhere that lists such a thing. You should not count on ever encountering another player, unless there is something major they've deliberately not told us.

Not right away anyway. Sean has said numerous times they plan on implementing a more traditional style of MP sometime post launch.

Who knows when tho really.

"There is this thing, which I'm not going to talk about now; that is a plan for multiplayer, and for people to have a more traditional multiplayer experience within the game. That's something that we'll deal with further down the line, that is exciting. But that is not what's core to the game right now. We have a laser-sharp focus on what we're going to ship with, basically."
-Sean Murray

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/no-mans-sky-will-have-traditional-multiplayer-but-/1100-6420982/.

I've also heard it said in interviews in my travels but I cant pinpoint which ones because I have watched too many.

Its just not something he has talked about much because its not their focus.

I have four friends buying this game and come hell or high supernovas we are gonna freakin find each other!

I'm really looking forward to a day a few months from now when I send the group text that names the most recent star I've found and the reply comes back from one of them "hey wait... how do you spell that again? Is there a lava planet on the edge of the system???"

This game has some incredible potential that I can't wait to get into.

I look forward to seeing this game grow and evolve over time. I'm there day one to play the game how they made it to be played, which is pretty much single player only. But if things he is saying about adding features down the road like MP components and who knows whatever else they have planned. Its going to be reason for me to keep on coming back to the game.

I really hope the community for the game is good here on GAF. If not I'll find one because I think I'm into this one for the long run.

I hope it has legs too. I'm even thinking of starting a meetme group in my city. Discuss some NMS.

The people you see in these threads constantly? We'll definitely be in the thread as much as possible lol. Community should be fine

That would be cool.

Yeah thats what I'm hoping for. It would be so cool to figure out all the secrets with all of you. Showing off our ships and discoveries and stuff. It should be good fun.

I'll look forward to posting snippets of my nms diary with you all for example..

Pirate chronicles
Diary entry #127: I took on a space station today I waited months, flying to different planets and building up my ship to take up the task..I was ready.... or so I thought, yes I lost badly!

Lol or something like that

I'll be there Day 0. And the screenshot thread

Think there should be a spoiler thread too? Like for if/when people start uncovering lore or features/mechanics that hadn't been revealed?

I think it would be a good idea at first but I imagine eventually we will all end up in the OT by the time OT2 starts... or way before depending on how active it is lol

Definitely. There's going to be people that play it for 72 hours straight to get to the center first. Blackout everywhere but GAF come launch day.

Even before launch day since people will no doubt get it early physical.

The whole 'running into other players' thing is confusing. Obviously it's extremely unlikely, but are they actually tracking every player's location on a server and sending it back to every player 'just in case' two people meet? I don't think they've explicitly said if the game has a multiplayer backend that allows two players to meet in-game. They've sort of dodged the question by just repeating how unlikely it is.

If you wanna try your hand at playing old school Elite to pass these last couple weeks here are the links:

You can get Elite 1 officially in two places. You can get it from Frontier's official store for both PC and Mac but I'm not sure how it works (the original game is pre-Windows).
https://www.frontierstore.net/usd/games.html

The second place is at the homepage of one of the original programmers where he has free ROMs of pretty much every official version. http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/index.htm The site looks like a mid 90's website but was updated as recently as 2014 when ED came out. After some research I think the most advanced and feature-rich official version of the original Elite is the Archimedes version, but emulating it was beyond me. As far as the 8-bit versions go, Bell himself actually recommends the NES version over the BBC Micro original. I also recommend it because it has the simplest and most accessible controls. You can't just run it in any NES emulator though. You gotta have special settings for it to display properly. At the anniversary page there is a link where you can play the BBC Micro original right in the Chrome browser. Finally there's Elite: The New Kind -- a faithful port of Elite (I'm not sure which version but it seems to have Archimedes graphics) that runs natively on Windows without any emulation fuss. Controls are old school though. You can even get incomplete demo versions for platforms like the Game Boy and Genesis/Mega Drive. There was actually going to be a Super NES version but it never materialized. Maybe it would have changed things for the space game genre had it gotten more exposure (the NES version was Europe-only).

Then you've got Frontier: Elite 2. It's out there for free also but I'm not sure if it's official or whatever. As far as I know there's the original DOS version which you need to run in DOSBOX, and then an OpenGL version somebody made that runs natively in Windows but has some glitches like the planet textures not showing up and the autopilot freaking out unless you set the time acceleration to max.

Anyway, Elite 2 is simulation as fuck. You have to deal with Newtonian physics, but feature-wise it's actually remarkably close to what we're seeing in Elite Dangerous and No Man's Sky... except it came out in 1993. You can land on the planets seamlessly but you can't get out of your ship. It's got the same type of galaxy map and system map as ED and everything. A pretty full-featured role playing experience if you can get past the controls and the Star Fox 1 graphics.

I was looking at the Reddit info thread on No Man's Sky, and reading this has me hoping they'll figure out a way to let us build stuff and add that feature into the game at some point.

No Man’s Sky however throws this information in the trash when it’s not needed – the planet is simply regenerated from the same seed, if you will, when you return.

How does it handle your information? Anything you do is saved forever to your machine, that bird you killed, that terrain you destroyed, that blueprint you found, etc. but for everyone else, that planet is as untouched as the day you found it.

So how does the game handle two players being in the same area?

When you and another player are in the same area, unlikely as it is given the scale of a universe, with planets that can be the size of Earth or bigger, you’ll be placed in the same lobby – in this lobby data is shared. The terrain one player blows up is visible on the other players machine, and so on and so forth.

I'm like, "Come oonnn!" As long as more than one person is on a planet ... and we're sharing data ... let us build stuff and share that data!! Just wipe it clean when we leave! Or leave it for when we return since it'll be saved on all of our machines!! Cooommmeee ooonnn! lol

Nope, they have said it is possible multiple times. And they could have an online system that are always aware of the general position of each player (which planet they are on, etc.), but only starts tracking their specific movements and sending them to the server once two players are in the same vicinity.

What about sharing blueprints / products.

Sean's talked about combining elements to make products you can sell, the team aren't telling you the combinations straight away and he hopes people will share that info online. And I'd assume you can make something without the physical blueprint if you have the elements and know the combinations?

You'll still have to find those blueprints. It's the combinations of the materials you use with those blueprints that are going to be shared online.

They have talked about a "matchmaking bubble" that follows the player and if 2 players come into each others bubble they will matchmake. The sheer scale makes this near impossible outside of the very very center of the same galaxy. Even then its highly unlikely. They dodge the question because of how unlikely it is. Its so unlikely it may never happen. They dont want to give players the wrong idea about what the initial experience will be like.

My theories are that the MP components are in place
1. Just incase it happens it would be really special.
2. They plan on implementing MP in the future so the basic features were included earlier on??
3. The only way you can see what you look like is to see another player so they included it because it will have something to do with the end game.

I hate to be critical of the game, but I don't understand why Hello bothered putting in ground combat when it still looks so basic, and when the Sentinels system seems specifically designed to deter us from firing our weapon in the first place. Wasn't Sean's mantra that everything that's in the game should be fun? Space combat looks promising, but I think I'll be avoiding ground combat as much as possible.

FUCK I was gonna pre-order the Deluxe edition from Best Buy because it's on their damn website and you're able to put it in your cart but as soon as I went to check out, SORRY SOLD OUT.

;_____;

Guess I'm going digital.

Edit: DOUBLE dammit! Digital version doesn't work with GCU and there's no preorder bonus ship. Blergh!

It would be real dumb if you were able to create your own cave by shooting huge holes in the ground, but couldn't actually harm anyone. And besides killing does gives you the chance to get resources (and maybe other things in regard to NPC's) and doesn't necessarily lead to being hunted if you aren't seen or there isn't Sentinels on the planet you are on.

Definitely looks like it leaves something to be desired but I imagine its there just for survival purposes. It will give you a sense of danger in the game and not just weather conditions? Like against predatory wildlife and shit.
I mean, the shooting looked worse in that trailer then it has in hands on gameplay demos we have seen. That part of the trailer was poorly put together. In the one part he is shooting at nothing. The other scene he is shooting at a giant crab thing with zero impact from the weapon. Not exactly a flattering showcase.

Weapons are procedurally generated too, if memory serves me right. We don't what kind of weapons we'll be getting/using further in the game.

But yes, combat feels pretty basic on foot.
