No Man's Sky gets released like, soon, I guess ¯\_()_/¯

IMO, its a fair tradeoff to have an infinite universe to explore.

Sure, I will probably agree when playing it - it's just interesting to see. It's honestly really bad. I went back and checked the Sony announcement ("real time") and other trailers and it's not there.

The lack of confirmation on the PC release date feels like its taking the piss. It also feels odd paying sixty quid for a digital PC title.

Yup. Super annoying. I took some time off for release but I have no idea if I requested the correct days! I originally got Tuesday and Wednesday off, but I decided to play it safe and got Friday and Monday off. Can't complain too much about a 4 day weekend, but Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday will be hard to endure if it's released on Tuesday.

Probably because it was actually being played on a PC. I know they spent a lot of time working on the pop-in, it just comes with the territory with a game almost completely procedurally generated, coupled with a really weak PS4 CPU.

I had a feeling this would happen with people who haven't been following this thread, or Sean on Twitter XD
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Honestly, on the other hand I can't wait to listen to some 90s hip hop.
Oh, yes. Space mining + Biggie Smalls :D

Or C.R.E.A.M comes on in the middle of a space battle.
Lol yeah I've got a playlist like that I plan to imagine is on a cassette tape I can play in my ship a la Peter Quill

Btw, did you play Watch_Dogs by any chance? The soundtrack sucks on the whole, but there's that one moment...
Pop in is something I assume will be reduced with the first couple patches.
Unfortunately, while I hope so too, this isn't "pop-in" in the traditional sense at all and the way things look may be a limitation of the procedural tech they're using in its current form. It's very unusual for a game to be continuously spawning elements on the scale we are seeing here and I'm sure they've had to put in a lot of effort to get it even to the point we're seeing it at now. I'm very curious mostly as to how much a powerful PC can mitigate it with faster calculations.

Everyone else sharing playlist's inspired me to start making my own. Although, mine is one without synth and music of that sort (barring Elegia) It's more of a playlist for flying through space with your windows down (if that was possible of course) some picks are a little different, some are obvious. Hope it inspires someone to make their own too!

Followed. More spotify music for No man's sky the better lol.

The pop in on the PS4 version is the worst I've ever seen in a video game. Flying around, things appear right in front of you - constantly.
For thr kind of game that this is, there's really no other choice. Games with landscapes a fraction of the size have pop in too. Now increase the on screen scale exponentially, and the game can only handle but so much. The price of building fully sized worlds.

And from what I've seen and heard it's only really an issue if you are flying in-atmosphere. On foot or in space it's negligible.
This is also true from my observations. On foot, the generation is minimal. But when moving at faster speeds, its starts to need to catch up.

All good stuff on there. Followed.

Here's 2 for ya.

You like the synthy stuff that's been posted? boom. https://open.spotify.com/user/theworthyedge/playlist/3RLoRqZwQKjHlPUJyotQLG

You want a playlist full of literally everything? boom.

You are a true hero!

Okay, I've been back and forth on this game, but there's enough out there now that I went all-in and pre-ordered off the PSN store. Even if it's mediocre, I will have spent $60 on a LOT worse. And I think it will be very enjoyable for me.

See ya out there in the galaxy GAFfers
I know very very unlikely
, I'm now abandoning all NMS threads to prevent any unwanted spoilers.

Yea didn't think so. Meh take that trade-off no problem.

We're almost there

Yup! Don't get me wrong though! I feel that PC might even have the possibility of reducing it to where it's just like any other open world game. All that needs to be done is generate everything at farther and farther distances. How much power that'd require is up in the air (or space) so we'll have to wait and see of course!

Can they in the traditional sense really"fix" the issue because of how the world's are created right? Can that be fixed
Not in the traditional sense- increasing draw distance at the potential cost of performance/framerate.

Based on my understanding of the tech there are two ways it could be "fixed"/improved for the specific experience of playing this game:

-Improve calculation speed, so that getting the output values of what needs to be generated at any given point happens faster; the faster it happens the less likely you are to notice. Theoretically possible with optimizations or CPU brute force
-Increase the size of the generated "box" around your x,y,z coordintes, so that more of a scene is generated and rendered around you, making it less likely for you to witness something being spawned in your view. It's possible that the only tradeoff for this is a performance hit, but it's also possible that it screws up the equations somehow and this is the "sweet spot" they've settled on.

But conceptually, outside of the limited speeds of walking on a planet/flying in a ship, you could always reach a speed at which you would be able to outrun the generation of the world around you and it would take a second to "catch up," if you could move fast enough. In the debug demo video Sean noclips super-fast over the surface of a planet and eventually even the basic terrain geometry disappears until he slows down.

Not to go off topic but does anyone know that song he had playing when they showed he stealth mission at e3 and the hack everything trailer music? Watch dogs 2 is going to be great

Run The Jewels - Blockbuster Night Part 1

Might be that one IIRC.

edit: Karspankey has right song name below :)

Looking forward to next week, I think the game is going to be really good.

I'm a fan of this type of game. Elite 1 & 2 were games I played a lot back in the day and Elite: Dangerous was a decent reboot too. NMS looks to add more to the space sim formula, with its on foot planet exploration, resources gathering and survival elements and I can't wait to get lost in this universe.

Hoping for PSVR support down the road too, as this would be awesome in VR.

Well that sure is a mix of fight or flight 😉

Asimov from the soundtrack is so fucking good.

As a massive 65dos fan I just got a boner.

Yea, it's a bit annoying actually.

We get instant responses about leaks or superformulas or funny photoshops from Reddit, but when you ask for some factual release date info, it's crickets chirping.

We don't have any recommended PC specs yet either. Just minimum ones.

That must be a hard life. ;(

The OST for this game is out of this world.

Again, if you want some more 80's/synthwave, check our own thread in community about it

I had missed this due to my (almost) complete NMS blackout in the last week or so, thank you for sharing!

I'm making a NMS playlist with lots of 65dos, Boards of Canada, Explosions in the Sky, pg.lost etc... we're so close!

I dont really work in the industry. Would love to.

I have a Youtube channel where I regularly discuss No Man's Sky and the industry. I reached out to Sony and requested a review copy in hopes of having my review done at embargo with the rest of the reviews to hopefully get some traction.

And they responded :D

Can you give me the link to your channel? I swear I saw it somewhere, but I can't find it in my youtube subscriptions.

The first point is probably what is going on, but is worth to keep in mind that the jaguars in the PS4 are not known to be that good, so in theory it's very possible that a modern i7 processor could generate everything much earlier. We will know for sure in a week.

I manage a walmart and we just received nms. Bought the digital version, but it is very cool to hold the ps4 case. I am so stoked for this game.

I can't enjoy music if it's not in a greater context. Just listening to it does nothing for me.

that's... really sad..

because most of the music I hear have that context even if the creators don't give it themselves, why? because I give it that meaning, that grater context related to myself or the things I find important.

What's with all the music spam? LOL If it doesn't have Devin Townsend of Sevendust in it, it's a failed list already :P

blame the awesome music 65daysofstatic made for this game
