I went the Ebay route to get my LE.

The still are no LEs showing up at the online stores. It must have truly sold out.

Usually, you have some pop up at the last minute.

I'm worried that there will be no planets like the super colorful ones they showed early in development due to the ps4's lack of power.

Just picture this, buying on PS4, being offered the LE option from a friend, having Sony tell me to eat shit when I ask for a psn refund, and then a few days later my wife buys me a gtx 1070 so I stop whining about rx480 vs gtx 1060....

I will die inside if it's much nicer on PC lol

What does color have to do with power?

Edit: Also, the spoiler thread is full of screenshots of planets with tons of color and plantlife.

suppose it's easy to interpret this as selfish, but I actually wish all copies were locked until Sean Murray pushed a big shiny red button. the most interesting phase of the game for me is the community working things out together

Similarly selfishly, I wish that didn't happen 'til the UK PC release date on the 12.

Having Sean opine about not wanting the pre-release copies to ruin people's experiences with spoilers rings damn hollow given the staggered release.

And why exactly would that be because of the PS4's lack of power?

If it would be the case that those lush planets are not present, it is because those scenes were in trailers 2 years before the initial release.

A lot can happen in one's development cycle especially if you only have a handful of men on your team to work on the game.

Always throwing it on the PS4 "holding it back" is straight up PC elitism and that stuff needs to stay out of this thread.

Does each region have their own galaxy?

I'm still super looking forward to it on PC, thought I can't afford it until the end of this month anyway. Luckily by then it'll have lots of Neogaf user impressions on what it's like, although from everything I've seen so far I really like the look of it a lot.

And if it ends up being disappointing for whatever reason, I've still got the fantastic Elite Dangerous for my planetary and universe exploration needs. It's less artistic though.

Cancelled my physical Amazon preorder and did a digital on PSN. You guys are probably right about it being better digital, since its more or less the kind of game you play in bits.

I don't think the PS4's tepid-ass hardware really has an effect on stuff like that though. This game is mathematically very interesting but it's not doing anything hardware intensive AFAIK.

I doubt PC version has staggered release and all regions / countries have same release date for it. It most likely being 12th :(

I'm thinking about driving around Seattle looking for a store who will sell it.

I know it's only a few days but I'm dying knowing that other people are playing right now.

Yeah it really sucks.

Just a headsup- I emailed GameStop to see if their digital pre-order included the bonuses, and this is the response I got:

GameStop said:
Thank you for contacting GameStop. I apologize for any doubt regarding our pre-order extra bonus content. I would love take care about your concern.
However; if you order a physical copy or a download one you will receive the bonus code. Please keep in mind those codes are until supplies last.

With that being said by them, I feel confident in ordering their digital copy for the bonuses.

i dont want to click on the spoiler thread, but is the general consensus positive now or still as divisive as before

After watching five minutes of footage (performance spoiler... Yes that's right, just in case)
holy shit, I heard pop in was bad, but fuck is it BAD! I really hope you can improve it on PC as the way it is right now will just irritate me enough to not want to fly around a planet.

It's been years since I paid full price for a game. I always wait for a price drop, but this is one game I've been dying to play.

Agreed. In the same selfish vein, I kinda hope they do wipes on day 1. If I spawn on a planet and I don't get credit for naming shit, I'll be a bit pissy about it.

Literally every person who ever plays this game will spawn on a unique planet. I feel like you guys still don't grasp the scale of this game. Even if they don't wipe anything, the chances of us ever seeing any of the places people with early copies went are miniscule.

I didn't notice it until I read comments like yours and now I cannot stop looking at it.

Let me be the one to say I've rather enjoyed the [somewhat wild] ride that's been the build-up to the game's inevitable release over the past, maybe, twelve to eighteen months. Fan outcry, quote-unquote "controversy", death threats. An interesting period in games and one I will look back on with equal-amounts intrigue and equal-amounts hilarity in this "post-social media" era of ours.

I think most of gripes come from that early copy players get to use up "cool names" and pop culture reference names for planets, plants and animals.

That's not a spoiler. In fact, people need to know this because it ain't changing, and people should decide if it is a deal breaker for themselves beforehand.

NO MAN'S SKY renders the world around you in real time from a series of math equations. Again, in real time, ALL the time. How fast it can crunch that math to render all the terrain, buildings and the flora/fawna around you depends largely on how fast of a processor you have. Ideally, if you have a fast processor it should be able to crunch that math quicker, which would mean terrain can be generated at a higher detail farther away, leading to less noticeable "pop-in".

We have no guarantees we'll be able to push this rendering distance out farther on PC, though that is many of our hopes. But what is more or less guaranteed is that the PS4 version of the game will never be rid of this "issue", because you can only do so much with its low-power mobile CPU. But also this type of generation is the only reason No Man's Sky exists. It would have been literally impossible for this team, or almost any team, to develop such a game even with a tiny fraction of the planets and content on offer here, using more traditional rendering methods.

The PS4 has the power. It is not that old.

You be surprised how often people downplay the PS4 simply because no console will ever compare to the most recent PC hardware.

Then I always thought the comparisons between console and PC hardware was pointless posturing to begin with.

I mean when you have some folks calling the PS4 port of NMS gimped, or the "tepid-ass" comment above by diaspora, it just seems entirely pointless and serves little else other than to incite platform specific bullshit.

Well, thanks for making my PS4 vs PC version more difficult.

Still, even though I prefer an Xbox controller I'll probably go with the PS4 version due to the guaranteed midnight August 9th release compared to the PC version still being in flux concerning the release date even if Steam says August 9th for NA.

I am probably going to pick one name for my planet and do like Planet Name 1, Planet Name 2, Planet Name 3, Planet Name 4....ect. That way I can see my progression through the galaxy.

Yep. NMS assets aren't loaded in advance or are they just waiting on queue to be pulled from the disc when necessary.

That is the crux of procedural generation in that the world is generated constantly based on your draw distance in that terrain isn't created until you actually approach it.

It's not a matter of loading areas in advance to diminish the effect of "pop-in" because the terrain doesn't exist until it's created in real time by the procedural generation. I've said this before. What people are perceiving as "pop-in" is actually the procedural generation creating new assets right it front you on the fly.

In fact you can see this in other games that use procedural generation such as Minecraft or Starbound when new cells or chunks are loaded.

If you want to be a bit more likely no one has thought of this, try PN-1, PN-2, PN-3... Etc. :)

How close have you been able to travel to a star?

I've been going with the puls engines at full speed towards the star for about 16-17 minutes now, and it seems like I'm not getting any closer. So it doesn't look like you can get that close. Or it might just take a really long time. Is there an easy way to share a screenshot from the PS4? If so I could send you a screenshot so you can see have close I am

How much did you pay yours?

I'm paying 52.99 for it

Yep, the same. It was £69.99 less 10% when I ordered, then they dropped the base price by £10 a week or so ago while retaining the £7 discount. Decent price for the LE I reckon; it's just about whether the game itself is worthwhile.

So with that, what are the chances of running into a planet or flora/fauna someone else named?
