No Man's Sky Spoiler Thread

So you have seen all the planets and what not? What is "everything"?

Don't be obtuse. You know exactly what I meant.

Starbound was the game that sobered me on all the possibilities that come with huge procedurally generated universes. Skeptical exactly describes where I've been with No Man's Sky for a good while. Gonna be interested in reading not only reviews but the general reception for the title 3-4 months down the line.

I think the randomly generated fauna mostly just walking around doing nothing in the footage is what brought me down to earth (no pun intended) on the whole "oh, right, procedurally generated" aspect. FWIW I am expecting this game to still be a pretty good time, just not particularly deep, y'know?

Ah, that makes more sense. At this point I'm just wondering if players are actually playing together or not.

It'd be impossible to actually populate everyone in real time so the way you'd come across another player would probably go the same as for another planet. As soon as you get near another person, they'd be instanced into your game properly and not just as you would by seeing their's and others discoveries. The real trick, besides somehow getting near them, is to figure out what they look like in the first place!

This reminds me about the leaked length of The Order 1886 being sub 7 or 8 hours. Defenders were losing there minds and accusing the player "did not do enough exploration" or "did not carefully examine the collectibles" etc. Hilarious.

"ITS THEIR FAULT! I HAVE NO POWER OVER HOW I FEEL ABOUT SOMETHING"

Why can't people just get over the fact that the devs DON'T WANT TO SHOW YOU CERTAIN THINGS and let people figure it out for themselves. There has been plenty of game play footage.

"BUT I NEED JUSTIFICATION TO SPEND MY MONEY"

Wait for a sale.

But if what the developer shows is lacking or too basic or not meaty enough for the potential buyer, that buyer is not wrong for wanting to seek out information.

Take metal gear solid 2 : the developer didn't want to show you a LOT of that game before release. But what they did show was absolutely stunning and more than satisfied almost all potential buyers.

I'm loving how this dude's experience playing the game is basically acting as an ink blot test for people who have already decided they love or hate this god damn game.

I've been looking forward to this game a long time. I pre-ordered it for full price a month ago. I've defended it against the "but what do you actually do?" crowd. But everything this leaker is talking about is really deflating my anticipation.

Haha so true man. This game seems to have got people SO carried away with the hype that there will be a shitstorm when everyone realises it isnt what they wanted. I feel for the team who made this game, either way they are fucked as expectations are beyond what any dev could manage, let alone a small team like this one. Shit most of what people in this thread are expecting has never been done by ANYONE, and for some reason it is thought possible by a small team who have been stretched to the limit by this game. Realistic expectations have gone out the window for most and its a thread of pipedreams, this Reddit dude has just said it like it is, nothing more nothing less, and probably what most reasonable gamers expected from an enormous randomly generated space epic built from the ground up by 30 people.

"Lets project what I wont be doing in the game on everyone else"

Again, some of the statements from people are like

"You don't have to complete the main quest in Ocarina of Time if you don't want to! If you like, you can just stay in Hyrule Castle town forever, explore the city streets and talk to the public, go around collecting rupees and buying stuff as long as you like!"

"I don't intend to play Super Mario Bros. like everybody else, I'm going to go down that first pipe and live down there like a hermit, collect the coins, see the sights, never come out :D :D"

There's a huge difference between NMS and The Order though - One is a sandbox game and the other is a linear game. Sandbox playtimes almost always vary wildly among different people.

It's indicative of the era that we live in. This spoiler filled inofficial preview of the final game eschews forced talking points and gets to the core of the game. It's quite impressive that 40 hours in this player has gone to less than 100 planets. He could hours on a planet further increasing the play time. His experiences have sold me on the game as I love lengthy games with long replay value.

HG needs to further expand on this concept with updates that include guilds, base building, factions, favorite planets quick travel, and other mechanics.

This game might turn out to be disappointing but it is the game Hello Games have shown us and you can't judge it based on one persons experience.

I personally think it's going to be fantastic and everything I thought it would be.

Maybe there will be something epic in the day 1 patch because those spoilers make this game sound like everything that was feared.

Super disappointing its seems like every single planet has a lot of stuff on it. I ever expected that old 9:1 ratio of lifeless rocks to life but a decent chunk would have been welcome

The more I read of that guys posts the more I think he may have done something wrong. He says things like:

It just doesn't make sense that everything is the complete reverse of what you would expect. I can imagine a couple of oddities but not across the board. I don't think he's fully grasped how to upgrade and he's not balancing things out properly.

In the first video, where hes picking which beam upgrade to pick, he doesnt seem to know which one each means, as he keeps hovering over each pick. I imagine theres trade offs to each upgrade- and I imagine that picking a beam to mine faster/more would increase how fast it overheats.

Holy shit people are already in the bargaining phase a week before the game releases, hopefully we can all reach acceptance and enjoy the game for what it is or not.

Yall goin at it in here. Sucks the guy spent so much for the game to play it early. I would think the fun was to be had when you already have thousands of folks discovering planets and running around.

Has the guy with the game said something about combat?

Skyrim with space.

Did people on here have some expectations that I didn't know about? Isn't the crux of the game just exploring a procedural galaxy and just exploring planets, trading, encountering alien lifeforms etc..?

Some people really have weird ideas about the meaning of 'procedural planets'.

It doesn't mean that in some planets there can be cities, and quests, and people to talk to, and princess to save, and rebels to join, and aliens to establish diplomatic relations with, etc etc.

I expected a challenging game. They showcased how many dangers there were. They had a trailer dedicated to the survival aspect of the game. Dude played 30 hours and didn't die once. I die in Minecraft MUCH easier than that. My expectations based on trailers and interviews were shattered by that revelation. Game is a pretty walk in the park. Still buying it.

I'm expecting to enjoy the game, but I fully understand the limitations of what they're attempting.

That said, I have the LE version preordered because I'm in the mindset of supporting devs who take risky projects, and this whole thing feels like an artistic/passionate endeavor.

At the same time, I'm not opposed to critiquing the surfacing shortcomings, because the exposure for this game felt calculated in a way to not address those things.

I don't know if we're quite at those levels yet. The game still has yet to be released! Anyway, bringing up the backlash to The Order 1886 gives me an excuse to link what I think is the best example of laughing man: Interview with a "Ready at Dawn" Developer

The amount of dissecting thats gone into one persons personal experience of the game is funny at this point.

I think it is due to the sharp contrast between this guy's "first impression" and people's expectation from trailers and dev's words so far. There are points the leak has brought up that were unexpected, such as "didn't even die once" considering there is a specific trailer focusing on "survival", and "unbalanced in game economy brings time to beat (reach center) about 10 hours".

that's something they easily could patch if they wanted though. "Oh, monsters do more damage, atmosheric effects are more deadly etc"

Some of you can't except that this game might not live up to the insane expectations. There's nothing invalid about the guys experience or criticism of the game.

I'm glad to see you are keeping your expectations in check.

Is gribbs wrong? The guys playthrough doesn't sound any different from the tons of media we have. Nothing that has come out has changed what has been shown to us.

Can't comment on bugs since he doesn't have the patch.

Just caught up with a spoiler free summary.

Some of those things are actually pretty disappointing to hear.

Do we know if the press are playing it now as well?

Would explain Jeff's little jab at the game.

The game is what every gamer in his sane mind thought it would be.

And of course there's more to it: we still don't fully know how crafting works (hopefully the economy isn't really that broken or can/will be fixed), how ship upgrading works (since our hero and saviour the leaker seems to have problems understanding that), etc.

But at the end, it's exactly like the first gameplay we were shown. And the strenghts or weaknesses of the procedural algorithms can't be fully tested in a single playthrough.

That's what I'm thinking. He's also said he's upgraded his suit and his suit can now carries more inventory than his starship and that all starships are more or less the same. Again, that doesn't ring true. Ironically, again, that's the complete opposite of what you would expect. I have a feeling he's missing something because we know there are three basic models of starship and one of them is for carrying more cargo. What would be the point if your suit could carry more?

It's also lucky that the guy uses Reddit and immediately alerted them to his purchase.

This doesn't in any way discredit his view of the experience overall though, it's just that some of the things he's saying sounds odd. It's almost impossible to have a balanced conversation at the moment. You've got some on one side suggesting it's an alpha build and some on the other side taking one stranger as the only proof they need to say the game is bad.

Rings true for me. Always thought this game looked like fun, and I still do. Was cautiously optimistic about it, and still am.

Has a day 1 patch been confirmed or is that just a hope people are hanging on to? If it has been confirmed, I bet it will fix the big bugs like the sea creatures being broken, and the upgrades making you worse. I highly doubt it will be changing the core of the game like how each space station and building looks the same, or how easy, quick and safe it is to get atlas stone which then sell for ten times other rare materials.

Jeff Giantbomb Jeff?

Link to the little jab?

Again, I'm not sure if he was just fucking around or not. Not sure if press even have the game.

I think it was from a mail bag video. He kinda makes a witty remark on the amount of things to do in the game or something. Just a small jab at the game but I wonder if he's actually been playing it.

I think it was on the most recent Bombcast. He did say something to the affect that, 'Starbound is like No Man's Sky where you actually do things'.

It was this week's bombcast when they were talking about starbound.

I think deciding a game is "everything I thought it would be" before playing it, is setting yourself up for disappointment.

Jeff is ambivalent and snarky toward 90% of games though, not sure he'd be the proper press litmus test for NMS regardless.
