No Man's Sky Spoiler Thread

Pop in is the limitation of the PS4 and is necessary for the world they have created.
I'll bitch and moan too, if the steam version is just as bad of a port
.

Did we know about Radnox? (Exotic material)

You might wanna be on alert to bitch and moan then. It's procedural, so the limitation could be within the engine not the hardware. Still can't bruteforce the pop in out of Minecraft due to being procedural.

You would hope that they found a way to take advantage of CPUs that are 3 years old and more powerful than the PS4.

This isn't true about Minecraft. It generates chunks as you get close to them, then stores those chunks in memory. Based on your draw distance. There's no pop in in Minecraft. Chunks are rendered in their entirety.

I stand corrected on that front then since I've just gone by what I've seen of others playing, I tried it very briefly once but wasn't for me at all. I'm guessing it must just be a placebo of the way the game renders or I saw it running on a crap PC.

I mean, it really isn't that simple. For example, when changing between LOD's some things can seem rescaled a bit and it appears as a pop due to the minor scale or positional change. It's pretty common within procedural stuff. In general I can't think of anything like that which doesn't have a level of pop or LOD fade looking off, with Elite Dangerous being one of the better candidates for it, yet it's still evident.

That's just one aspect that will just look the way it is. There's even a few standard open world games that suffer with this like JC3 with it's magically shrinking trees as you reach the higher LOD.

Then like I said, the engine may be a limitation in itself when it comes to drawing all this stuff in. I expect my 4790k to blow the game apart, but I expect pop in too.

It really isn't. Not statistically. Not when 1% means 10,000,000,000,000,000 planets, and 9% means 1,620,000,000,000,000,000 planets

If the different planet types are randomly distributed, then it doesn't matter how big your total population is. In that case in a sample of 100 planets, it would be virtually impossible for none of the barren planets to show up, assuming the 90% figure is accurate.

Well even from that one stream of the guy just shooting everything and barely exploring at all all the hype has returned.

If you're on a surface, you lose your carried inventory and must go back to where you died to recover it (I think. I saw the prompt pop up telling a streamer that after he died).

If you're in space, you spawn at the nearest station with the most basic ship.

From what' I've seen so far, you respawn with your ship but a random part is severely damaged, and still get to go and reclaim your stuff from your grave.
I haven't noticed yet if you also lose some Units in the process.
They completely changed the death mechanic.

YOU LOSE YOUR SHIP IF IT IS DESTROYED???

What if it has upgrades / etc? Does your new most-basic ship have all upgrades lost as well?

Yes you can? Or at least, you can definitely mitigate it. Just up the LoD/draw distance in the settings menu. You can't do that on the console versions. 'Brute force' isn't the right term but the devs can definitely compensate for it.

Edit: Oh cool you responded as such elsewhere. All good.

Same.

Maybe I'm wrong but...

Wasn't there an early trailer a couple years ago where they showed a player rising up from underwater inside a ship, landing the ship on a shore and then exiting the ship and walking around looking at Dinosaurs?

I thought you could use your ship as a boat or submarine, but I guess not. Unless they changed their minds along the way.

/Shrug

The player themself walks out of the ocean, not the ship itself.

Oh? That's probably better. I remember them talking about respawning with the most basic ship if you died in space, and that'd be fucking rough once you've got high end stuff.

Stream here

But there's actually a couple on Twitch if you want to go choose.

This game is gonna be beast.

Watched 2 minutes. I've now watched 8 minutes of NMS footage in total (naughty me) and it's clearly the perfect after a hard day chill out fodder. The atmosphere is sublime.
Also, second video I clicked reminded me why I don't use Twitch. It was a HULU ad with the guy still in the corner rabbiting about getting the game next week and the ad ends and it's a Youtube video about NMS. Dafuq click.

Wow dude is underwater, the sea creatures are freaky.

Those things flying in the air look like thin whales, awesome.

These kinds of planets with cliffs and water will have me looking for waterfalls.

There are most likely no waterfalls. All water so far has been on the same level, and digging down anywhere you hit water at that level.

Don't think we have seen waterfalls yet, would be amazing I bet. Niagra falls type stuff.

One of you guys should watch the 4 'explore/fight/trade/survive' trailers.

I'm 80% certain there is a funny brown planet in there which has lots of high plateaus and a waterfall somewhere. Could be wrong.

Though you guys who have watched lots of streams are probably right.

Just watched to check and I couldn't find any. There's quite a few with plateaus and higher land masses but couldn't find any waterfalls or something that looked like them. Guess I could have missed it if it was one of the fast cuts.

I watched as well and didn't see any waterfalls.

I have seen this more times that I can count. It's completely standard.

Yeah, I also don't think it's a thing with the dev. I can't remember what game it was not too long ago that kept getting taken down but it was talked about that Twitch usually does it by self policing to avoid any headache that could occur.

Also if it was the dev worrying about it they'd probably do something on the end of Playstation, don't they publish it? The streamer last night I thought specifically mentioned trying to contact Playstation to make sure he wouldn't get banned or something.

The devs have said that the light/dark cycle on planets is determined by their rotation period, but IIRC from everything we've seen on streams they all appear to follow the same 24-hour cycle.

Supposedly you can fly to each system's star, but we haven't seen it happen yet. One streamer flew straight toward a star at top speed for quite a while and didn't even get close.

Ok,......quite a little bummer,.....

Kind of immersion breaker,....same time length? Are the planets really rotating? Because the stars in the sky are not "moving"?

that's the last thing I heard too, on one of the official streams. that sounded unnecessarily savage and grindy (and discouraging towards trying different playstyles). this new one sounds much better.

nobody is going to get banned or punished for playing a legitimate copy of a game early. Twitch's terms doesn't allow streaming of unreleased games, so I'm not sure whose side the streams getting shut down is on

Yeah, and that we would have lost everything in our inventory/cargo, and any discovery not uploaded via beacons.
Apparently they changed it (just like beacons are not used for uploading discoveries)

Honestly, it would be a cool mechanic to add for hardcore mode.

It's hard to tell exactly what is and isn't happening just from watching streams. I don't know if anyone has set out specifically to test it.

We will have answers in due time.

Yeah, that was kind of what I was getting at. Dumb to think a stream getting shut down is the dev worrying.

watched that two hours video on youtube...
i swear man its like its in every game thats deep down an item collecting game...
is fucking small ass inventory space.
im sure you can make it bigger way down the road but i swear 30+ min of that vid was inventory managment and having to go off world just to sale shit. plus the gun looses recharge way to fast.

and even though the game looks good i don't particularly like the graphics style. why is all of the stream blurry as fuck?

Scrub streamers with bad streaming settings / bad streaming setup / bad connection speeds. BigTiggles stream is one of the better ones out there, from quality of stream to quality of gameplay; http://www.hitbox.tv/BigTiggles

Game needs a 'Make temperatures make sense' mod. They seem to be completely meaningless for the generation of the planet. Watching that stream and it's -70C, but it looks like you're walking around a generic temperate location. Gives the impression the temperatures are just on a random scale and given no logic based on planet location, atmosphere, etc. and have no meaningful impact.
