No Optical Audio on PS5?

The article mentions they will be seeling and HDMI splitter ($40) that will have optical out on it that the older headsets will be able to used.

Newer headsets will use the better HDMI for a wired connection.

" If your headset typically connects to the console via optical audio, you'll be able to connect the base station to the XSX's USB port to get the same features — no optical audio needed (though the console will still have the port) "

I didnt see that, there was much hubris a few months ago that series X had no optical port.

hdmi does it, beside only a small percentage of gamers use a proper reciever and speakers. the majority will use shitty headphones or overpriced earbuds. Its a f*cking shame, i play Ghots of Tsushima with a denon reciever and a teufel system and its soooo good. i can hear the arrows flying at me and can tell the direction where there coming from crystal clear.

Will be interesting to see what Astro do, I have gen 4 A50's which obviously connect to my one x via optical out and when it was announced the Series X wouldn't have an optical port Astro said they would be doing something (firmware update I believe) which would sort it out (to presumably make it work via HDMI).

HDMI is the best, but I'm using a Sonos beam + ones for surround, using arc HDMI, the TV adds 0.3 sec delay to the audio and it's unbearable. So I'm having to use an audio splitter to get the sound from it straight into the beam.

Did it this way because the ps5 won't have optical to go direct. Just need to find a TV that can process Dolby 5.1 without adding delays to Sonos if anyone is currently using this set up.

The source is full of mistakes and assumptions. I wouldn't take it seriously my green warrior 👀😂
Its a headphone maker explaining how they will work next gen.

Show your work.

I showed you how you were wrong on that embarrassing 800k Series X thread you made.

I hope you could do the same.

It assumes ps5 has hdmi in for audio. Which has never been hinted or mentioned which is an amazing news but its an assumption non the less

I know this was a bone of contention when series X was announced.

How will audiophiles get their next hen audio now?

Joke is on you, the highest quality audio DOESN'T passthrough optical-out. Lossless Dolby True-HD or DTS-MA is HDMI (also (e)ARC) only.

Get your facts straight before trying to be edgy.

I've said for months earc is the only way to go. Want me to quote myself saying it?

I got a bunch of pushback on the subject.

So thanks for confirming what I've already said.

Sony went full audio and obliviates the optical audio port? Guatdafak SOny??

Should they also have scart and RCA out because some use too old equipment?

Just have a damn a/v-receiver with digital output if having it is so important.

Sometimes it is time to move on, and optical havent been a thing in years

That is what I said, ppl got pissed.

I just wanted aux out on consoles... always.... With ps4 I have to route audio jack through my monitor and it kinda sucks.
I have ps4 slim without optical. So this is my ONLY option to run audio from ps4 aside from controller (which is surprisingly fine)

The only company that has been giving optical for decades says it's not longer needed, because audio via HDMI 2.1 is the future and everybody will have access to that. Now all of a sudden, we need optical or else, I don't remember 360 having an optical out port, neither did OG XBOX.

It's just like Sony says they did not need UHD bluray for games, which they didn't. Now with their Tempest audio chip, they will need an advanced port to harness it and what it brings with HRTF and feedback, so a hardware company which is the pioneer for these things, audio, camera's etc says you don't need optical next gen. Then I'm inclined to believe them, they are trying to synthesize surround off your basic tv speakers via HDMI, they know what they are doing when it comes ports, as they've always been pioneers in giving us the best ports and features that made sense for use on a games' console...

Playstation really needs a deep dive into their Tempest audio tech. For a while I though I needed a new headset to harness the tech. So if I was confused, I'm sure less informed gamers might be too.

That's a shame, I switched from Astro TR mixamp to USB but would still like the option.

Is that true? The prototype had it but...

It's gone from this.

Optical audio was introduced in 1983. Audiophiles loved it when it was the best way to get a digital signal from your CD to a digital stero receiver, it was great for DVDs. But it's useless for HD digital audio formats created for Blu-Ray. It's ancient, outdated tech today.

If you have a one X, play some game in Dolby atmos , it's just amazing.

360 had the optical out connection on the included cable.

Praise the sun, Astro have put up this blog post which explains compatibility with the new consoles.

My A50's will not be worthless.

The A10 and A40 headsets can receive PS5 3D Audio via the PS5 controller.

Optical audio is limited. It's old tech that makes no benefits over USB 3.1 Gen2 nor HDMI 2.1.

And, in our experience, compared to optical, a coaxial connection does tend to sound better. That's because it has greater bandwidth available, meaning it can support higher quality audio up to 24-bit/192kHz. Optical is usually restricted to 96kHz.

If you want good audio, you need a receiver or at least soundbar anyway and will use HDMI.

Optical output is too old now. Just let it die already.

Well obviously optical audio is antiquated rubbish that no one needs and Sony is just forward thinking by removing it.

Cries of FUD and secret discords in 3... 2... 1...

Beside trying to stir shit and baiting other posters or trying to get "revenge" for criticism some people made about removing optical from XSX, what is your point here?

Well this seems a good a place as any, some surround sound system recommendation if anyone has the time.

depends on how much money you got^^
but in general, get a decent reciever like denon, yamaha or sony and get a real sorround system. no soundbar can emulate a sorround feeling like a speaker behind you. i would go for a 7.1.4 dolby atmos. Im pretty pleased with my teufel speakers (they are 10+ years old). this way u can get a really good thx dolby atmos system for under 2k euros. if thats to much money u can always go 5.1 which is still very nice and u can upgrade later.
