No PS4 Oculus Rift Support, "Not Yet" - Yoshida

ATTENTION: Can we please start a campaign for a PS4/Oculus partnership (just like the #PS4NoDRM thing)?!! With the same amount of activity we can turn this little "side note" into something real big, so Sony wont even dare to ignore such a high demand for REAL next gen gaming

I can't create a thread for this so please someone help me!
#BELIEVE

I am all for that !

We need to have good #xxxxxx line.

So people make up something and roll with it !

What's happening in my mind.

Good news:
PS4 supports the Oculus Rift in firmware x.x.x.

Bad news:
It works by connecting the Oculus Rift to a synched Vita's mystery port.

Actually, if I wasn't a junior, I'd have started such a thread before E3:

"What would be the most pleasent surprise for you at E3?"

And slap "Oculus support on PS4" as my answer.

What if there's a PS4 specific version, but that also works on PC?

And with Kinect

How about this:

#PS4OculusRedefiningVirtualReality

We need a thread for this :3

When we asked whether the company's planning on offering support in the future, he only offered a "No comment" with a big smile.
WWWWAAAAHHHHHOMGOMGOMG

Please make this happen Sony! It is literally the most exciting thing they could announce about PS4 imo

I'm honestly shocked that a deal wasn't made already. Once Oculus Rift releases, playing games on a TV will be immediately obsolete. Whatever system that supports this will win.
I don't think it exactly makes sense for all game types. Also, doesn't really work for local co-op/

I'm glad to see so many people agree with this. I'm still a Junior Member though. Can you please create a thread for this?

The twitter campaign is a great idea. Despite what Sony PR is saying its sounds like #PS4noDRM did have an effect on their decision, it may even have been the deciding factor. There are a lot of people that want Rift support, if we show them that it can be an important selling point they may listen

Well said. Let's do it.

Sony should discontinue their HMZ line and buy these guys.

If they can sell these at ~$399.99 or cheaper, it'd be a killer app.

nahh, i am not a Thread starter on Neogaf :P

I will create one on Meant to be Seen Forum and reddit when the Neogaf Thread is up ^^

VR is, imo, the next big thing like motion gaming was except it's core gamer friendly. Occulus Rift is impressive though they need a lot more game support. The 1080p version sounds great too. I think getting VR as a console exclusive would be a huge get for Sony. Much easier to push than 3D since you don't need a new TV, just the headset.

EDIT: Oh yeah they should just go and buy occulus guys, they're probably super cheap in comparison to the rift's potential. By far the biggest name in gaming VR right now and seem to have the furthest along tech. Well I'd like continued PC support too though.

Is there anything the PS4 wont be able to do? I mean, it's probably going to have the EQ next on it, that alone makes me want it. Just imagine, being able to use the Rift to check out Kelethin in glorious VR. hnnnnnnnghhh

Oh dear lol.. being a Junior Member is killing me right now.

This can be a huge step to a whole new gaming experience. I don't think that Oculus is able to do this on their own. A partnership with the PlayStation brand would heavily boost Sony, Oculus and gamers all over the world.

Sony needs to buy Oculus or at least go into partnership to make this possible.

If I was Palmer I would not sell until the first model has had at least a holiday at retail to see where the company stands, doing it before that point would be crazy considering it's his baby. Any console partnerships probably don't transpire until 2015, which sounds about right for the tech and software library to fully mature.

This would really be my dream true. I think games running at 1080p and 60 FPS shouldn't be a big problem, especially as the gen progresses. Besides, not every game needs to have Rift support.

It's going to be complicated to get this to work on PS4 but I Really hope they do it.

We really should get a #PS4RIFT campaign going. Same goes for Microsoft, I'd love to see both consoles support it.

The one good thing about Oculus rift is that you really dont have to render full 1080p frame, because much of it is not visible while wearing headset.

This is the visible area that is produced by VorpX, and PS4 could render on the the smaller surface that is painted in red:
vorpxdbji1.jpg

CymaticBruce clearly stated that when using VorpX, he cannot see blackness.
Eh, I guess, that's not true.
To render for the entire FOV on the 1280x800 screen, the render target needs
to be set at 1600x1000 to produce a texture large enough for the distortion
operation to fill the Rift's screen in such a way that its FOV is fully
covered, if one doesn't want to sacrifice image quality due to scaling.
You can see how this calculates to by checking the Rifts SDK. For 1080p you
will actually need a render target > 1080p.

Is it really viable that a hardware company will buy this tech when they likely could make the same specs cheaper themselves? I have no idea if Sony is in the mobile screen business, or if that's only Samsung, though. I'm not saying Sony will be doing it themselves or something, but a hardware partnership? Should greatly benefit both parties.

But fuck this sensibility shit. HYYYPE. I NEED THIISSSS

still no Twitter Campaign :P ?

I am not that into Twitter, only have a super old account i never use. So i am not really the right person to start sth. like this :lol

If they ever get official support then Sony wins this generation.

Have you used one?
The limitations are pretty big - it is not very mass market friendly
- can't play for extended hours
- motion sickness
- unknown long term effects
- weight on your head

other
- they already have the HMZ headsets
- one more thing to setup
- audio is meh
- MS enough money to deny exclusivity

I remember an insider saying Sony is making their on VR headset but it won't be ready any time soon. I an't remember who said it but with the HMZ already out there it won't surprise me.

I think at the very least Sony should help back them. After all it wasn't long ago they were trying to cut costs on their divisions. I don't think the Rift should be PS4 centric. If they ever did buy them, I'd hope they still focus on PC, while also dabbling in consoles as well.

The possibilities would be endless if they worked with Sony R&D.

No fanboy talk here but if they could get a slimmer, chargeable, future model to run from a new iteration of Vita, it would be heaven.

small tech question. If such a thing would happen, how would they handle 30fps games, and worse, how would they handle the double information needed ? What do you think ?

30fps games just won't cut it, sadly.

60fps games are a great sign, but for the rift the PS4 will have to draw 2 seperate images for each of those 60 frames. So in essence you need to be running 960x1080 images @ 120fps to make the 1920x1080 @ 60fps image you end up with.

If a PS4 game is running 1080p 60fps, you'd need to just scale back the image quality a little bit to make up for the split frames. It's certainly possible tho. "Rift Mode" could be something similar to split screen multiplayer mode, where graphical settings are toned down to compensate.

If Sony gets behind OR to bring direct compatibility to the PS4, a dev needs to make a demo for it where the wearer simulates the eating of crow. Send a copy to Pachter.

Palmer has gone on record many times hinting that companies have offered to buy them but he maintains that he will not sell. He doesn't want this to just become another R&D project of a major company that just gets half assed or forgotten about when it isn't immediately lucrative.

Oculus VR has rounded up some of the top young talent in the field. They are ahead of the game right now and the way they have created this open platform that welcomes developers of all kinds and the entire community to help in the development of the product, it's really unlike anything we've seen before. Everything about this product is magical right now and Palmer and Co. seem dead set on making sure VR becomes a reality the way they want it to.

Bottom line, Oculus knows they have pure gold in their hands. They know the potential that other people are just slowly starting to grasp. They aren't in it for a quick buck. They are going to do this the right way.
