(no technical analysis) Infamous: Second Son seemingly "well above 30FPS"

Hahahaha

Variable framerates that frequently run on the high end help image quality for certain AA sloutions like TMAA and TXAA, especially while in motion since those techniques blend frames.

infamous 1 and 2 suffered from bad framerate drops when the action got really intense, so this is music to my ears. it wasn't often enough to be frustrating, but it is still nice to know that this game will perform much better. getting so excited!

are you not being serious or something
no, i'm not, not being serious.

two decades of gaming with unlocked framerates, and relatively recently, "some people" can't stand fluctuations in frame rate and would rather have a game locked at its lowest possible framerate than have it run higher than that most of the time?

everyone has their own opinion, which is great. i'm of the opinion that unlocked > than locked.

I hope they offer the option to lock the frame rate, like that recent K:ZF patch did, if it's variable.

I prefer variable to locked 30 but there are people who don't and they should have the option to play at 30.

Hopefully they'll give an option for it like Killzone.

I have my doubts. They could have done it with the PS3, but they didn't. I guess if people complain a lot about it, they might do it.
Actually, how many games besides KZ SF allow you to lock framerate on consoles?

If it's not in the 40-60's, they need to lock it. A 30-50 is far more noticeable (like KZ:SF) than TR:DE. So locking it would be good. Or turn up more affects and drop it and lock it at 30.

Bioshock series allow you to unlock framerate, but that results in some serious screen tearing.

There are two words youÂ’re going to hear a lot of when it comes to PS4 and together, they change the game:

1080p
Unlocked frame rate

I just finished tomb raider on ps4 and had zero issues with the unlocked framerate.
Tomb Raider mostly hits 60 fps (or just below). It's basically on par with last gen Call of Duty titles in terms of performance.

Killzone SF, however, was generally much lower and felt terrible unlocked as a result. If inFamous is the same they should lock it at 30 fps.

That was, because it dropped to the low 20s. That's of course noticable.

But variable FR over 30 FPS is much better than locked 30. At least if it never drops under 30 of course or jumps between 35 and 50 every few seconds.

That's true. But every so often you can tell the game just spiked to 60fps before slowing down again. It's very noticeable- when you go from 30fps to 60fps in a blink of the eye. I guess if they can keep it to at least 50 fps it should be okay.

Aren't there already games with variable, above 30FPS games that don't judder? I haven't seen anything to suggest InFamous will have framerate problems on this hardware that it will need to be locked...

Tomb Raider and Battlefield 4 work very well. I've heard mixed things about Killzone Shadowfall though.

Infamous has never been a gave that has required a "locked" framerate, so I don't see any point in making it locked now. I'd always take a higher framerate in open world games, and as long it remains above 30 fps there will be next to no impact on gameplay with the variable framerate.

I'm all for putting in a lock option for the sensitive types, but I'm perfectly fine with variable framerate for myself, as long as the variation isn't huge.

I'm all for an option too. Would something like that be difficult for the devs to put in?

Me neither. I always prefer more frames where I can get them. Definitely keep the variable framerate as default and offer an option to lock it if possible.

I would perfer this in every game. It only looks bad if it's dropping below 30 which always looks bad even you are locked.

I didn't have an issue with the framerate in Tomb Raider PS4 so this is good news for me. They should have a lock at 30fps option for those who want it though.

Personally I didnt notice any judder in Killzone or Tomb Raider, both pretty smooth for me so I suppose I prefer unlocked.

I agree with this. Tomb Raider-esque performance should stay unlocked but KZSF Campaign performance should probably just be locked. If not, just give an option. I'm not too bothered by fluctuations but it can be a problem for some and I was surprised at how much better KZSF felt locked.
