Nobody wants a black cat.

That's really sad. I've never had a cat as a pet before, but if I ever adopt one in the future, I'm going to pick a black cat now.

I had a black cat once. Coolest cat I've ever had...
...

Too bad he got digested by a python...

I have one too named Oreo.

Someone left him in a box in front of my grandma's house so we took him.

He can't really meow (it sounds more like a cheetah) and he'll bite you for no reason sometimes but he's great and he's my sunbathing partner :)

Here he is with is brother Aslan (yeah room is a mess)

Bear, who was part of a litter of five. We found her mother, days away from giving birth, in a storm drain. She's called "Bear" because...well, in that last picture, you can see she looks sort of like a bear cub.

Funny, I also have a cat called Bear...my 2 year old and 3 year old children are very confused by this and call all cats "Bear Bear".

He's the most affectionate cat who is very patient and loving with the kids...(my other 4 cats, stay away from them but they are my cats anyway).

I have a black cat and is the sweetest thing. At the shelter I picked him up and he snuggle purred straight away; I knew I was leaving with him. Can't imagine not having him around now.

When I was adopting I specifically picked only black cats because nobody wanted them. This is Chloe II and Fleet Admiral Arbus von Dunkenthrax Tinkerton IV.

My god is it hard to take a good picture of them.

I also have a black cat

she's beaaaaautiful

okay, she's sylvester too but she also had the same problem; no one wanted to adopt her because she is black (and white)

I don't believe in the superstition either but black cats just look too plain for me.

Give me any fur pattern over monochrome furs.

Anyway, long story short, all the ads online, desperately trying to unload the black kittens, they are giving them away for $20 where their none-black siblings from the same litter are going for 140-150 bucks! What gives!! They even explain in the ad "Black kittens are free or cost less since they are less popular for adoption."

Every time I contacted a Craigslist ad selling 5-6 cute kittens, and one of those five cats happens to be a black cat...The most common response I've been getting, "They are all gone, but the black kitten is still available"
Checked the online auctions here in my city out of curiosity.

While the situation there wasn't as ridiculous, there was a very clear trend of black and black&white cats being the cheapest ones listed. Looks like I know which color to pick if I choose to get a cat.

i have a black cat. I also had a black cat before him. They're the best. Miniature black panthers at home, super stylish.

I love our black cat. She's sweet, affectionate, and talkative. And a ninja who will claw you to death if you find her hiding spot with your foot, of course.

Our other cat tries to murder her on a daily basis.

Two female cats with years separating their adoptions was not a good idea in retrospect. I've had the best luck with brothers. Cat bros are so chill and awesome.

Do any other black cat owners here start taking extra precautions around this time of year? I swear, I'm paranoid about her getting out between September to November. Lot of sickos in this world, most of the shelters around here also stop adopting them out during October. :(

My wife begged me into accepting a cat, one important rule I set forward was: It must be a black british short hair. Now we have one. Why don't people like black cats? I think they look elegant.

I adopted a black kitten from the pound 3 weeks ago. She's named Elvira. It was actually pretty hard to get a black kitten. I prefer them over other kitties just because of how much I like horror / halloween / supernatural :)

People pay to adopt kittens?

We just had 3 and gave 2 of them away like we've always done free of charge.

Did you give them their shots or spay/neuter them before you found them homes?

That's why people pay to adopt. Most adoptions include that in the fee. Plus you're supporting the shelter that uses mostly volunteer work to help animals. Their often times non-profit.

People think black cats and other dark colored cats are boring. Or they're being superstitious for stupid reasons.

I have a dark gray cat and he's great.

well, if it's from the shelter, but even if it's from another person, i would (and did) pay the cost of:
* the shots the cat needs during its infancy
* the food and kitty litter the cat consumed / used
* and a little bit extra for whoever took care of the litterbox :P

When we adopted our 2 cats from that friendly lady (not a breeder, but ... well, kitten happened) that my girlfriend's aunt knew, that ended up being like € 50 per cat.

Both my cats are Torties, OP:

Though not fully black, I'd say that's close enough to not matter. Let me tell you though, logistically, it's not the most convenient color of cat. First off, when you're looking for them and they hide under the bed, good luck finding them. Also, any low- or no-light situation plus the inherent need of a cat to walk right in front of your path will cause you to accidentally kick your cat more than once in their lifetime.

I also may or may not have almost sat down on one of my cats once. Stealthy motherfuckers.

I have a tortie and a rag doll that came from the same litter. My tortie is awesome and the most dog-like cat I've ever had. I can call her when she's outside and she'll come running towards me to come inside. She's the most talkative cat I've ever had too. Always trying to tell me something.

Not sure right now, too young to neuter but I think they got shots.
I get it with shelters, the craigslist stuff I understand less.

When our tuxedo cat passed away a few years ago my dad went to adopt a solid black cat a couple weeks before Halloween, a month or so after she died. They were hesitant to but when the lady came to assess where the cat would be living (this must've been some weird agency) I guess they saw the pictures we had up of her and decided the odds this near 70 year old man was gonna sacrifice the cat were pretty low :P

Both my torties are completely different. The older (much bigger) one loves to cuddle. Will constantly snuggle up to me or lay near me when I'm home. The little one won't ever do this. She'll come up to me in bed at night for some belly rubs (Her sister hates belly rubs), but she won't ever just come lay next to me. They both talk, but the little one talks the whole day, just constantly with everything she does. She responds when I call out to her, though both readily come over when I do. Also, she plays fetch, brings me the ball and everything.

They're both completely devoted to me though, will sit by the window when I come home after work, meow through the window when they see, immediately jump down and wait right by the door and then proceed to follow me around as I do my "coming home" routine. Same thing in the morning. They will be in whatever room I am in at all times and will sit by the door for some going away cuddles when I leave. I hear that is pretty common for Torties, to get very attached to their owner.

Love 'em to death, great cats.

is it opposite day? The superstition is the other way around.

It's cultural. Not everyone believes they are bad.

OP:

It's the same with dogs.

I have a black cat. She's a mess but friendly as they come.

It's super depressing to think about, it usually doesn't occur to me. My black cat was my first (a stray kitten) and the idea that this sweetie is undesirable to someone breaks my heart

As an added bonus, come Halloween you're already halfway decorated when you have a black cat! Just add pumpkin.

I have a black and white cat and the circumstances are pretty awful at the minute.

When I moved my Nan took her in to look after her. She's 15 and my Nan just passed away 2 weekends ago with the funeral being Friday. I need to get my cat back as my landlord said she can finally live with me again but my Uncle is saying it isn't fair on my cousin (who was living with my Nan) to take her back this close to the funeral.

This sucks. I need her to help me get through this as well and I want to get her settled into her new home, but I don't want to be a dick ;_;

Never had a cat, but the one I know most is my aunt's and she has a black cat. Part of the reason for the black cat is she thought it was like a panther.

So I wouldn't say nobody wants them. Never thought that nobody wanted them until I saw this topic.
