Nobody wants a black cat.

Mom has a black cat, he's great. He's like the opposite of any cat I've ever met.

That whole saying that you can't make a cat do what they don't do themselves, he's not like that. Go to him and pick him up, and he'll purr like he's the most loyal and lovestrung cat ever.

Love black cats and I think they look awesome. They actually do look cool and like scary mini panthers when it's dark.
When I grew up we had a bulky muscular black cat (older than me!), always looked like no shits given and it ruled the neighborhood. Yet he still was cool with baby-me.

Must be superstition and average people preferring bright colors for stuff.
I don't think the photography argument can be true, no way is the general public suddenly tech savvy and can predict how difficult things are in photography.

However, I'm more annoyed at black cats suddenly getting popular in the US (and UK?) during Halloween, with the intention of doing fucked up shit to them.

People think black cats are innately spooky and supernatural.

Such people really shouldn't have children. Like, can you ever call such people intelligent? You can only imagine the other bullshit views in their lives.

That said, I'll post my cats.

Black cat owner here. Rescued Evie in 2011 - she was found in a woods on her own. It is believed she was born to strays or dumped there as a kitten. One of the best things I have ever done is take her in, absolutely love her and she is very important to me.

I've been owned by many cats in my life but I agree with people in thread saying that for some reason, the full black/yellow eyes American short hair seems to be the most cuddly and lovable cat. The one I posted a pic of in my lap? She likes to be held like a baby and rocked. Licks my chin when I pick her up. It's so freaking weird. I've never had such an affectionate cat.

To play devil's advocate, not all black cats are cuddly and nice though lol.
My cousin's black cat is quite literally the devil incarnate. I call him El Diablo because he loves to bite the fuck outta every single person once and only once they let their guard down. I love that cat to bits and wouldn't have him any other way though, he is fucking mental to the core hahaha.

People are stupid.

Where I live, Portugal, the shelters have the same problem. My girlfriend and I adopted a black cat 2 years ago and from time to time we get messages from the shelter keepers asking if we know someone who would like to adopt a black cat because they are always left behind and most of them end up living in the shelter forever.

It's sad when you see cage after cage with nothing but black cats.

Here's Guenhwyvar, my sleepy panther.

I would love to have another black cat. When I was a little kid my family got a black cat with a little spot of white on his chest. Aside from being a little wild when he was younger he was a great cat who lived 20 years, which is by far the oldest cat I've ever had.

My fiancé and I just adopted an old sweetheart of a black cat about two weeks ago. She was one of ten in a very bad situation. She has two teeth, her "fangs", and nothing else. I love black cats, and she is no exception. Will try to do pics later when I get home.

My black cat, Lily. I also call her monster. She's coming up on 9 years old and I took her in after finding her as a kitten in the back garden hiding under some stuff we were clearing out. She recently had to have all her teeth out due to an infection caused by the roots which is quite common in cats her age. She eats just fine. On occasion she does like to play fetch and as with all cats she tries to get into any box no matter the size. Oh and she lets me hold her like you would cradle a baby.

She loves Amazon parcel day just as much as I do.

I will drop kick any fuck who hurts my cat.

I've had a black cat for most of my life... i also have a cute other cat and that is the one the guests give all the attention too even though the black one actually is willing to get attention.

I'd love to adopt a cat but I really hate hair on my floor which are unfortunately all carpet :( Also, all of my friends who own cats have had their furnitures heavily destroyed at some point. If only I can find a cat that doesn't shed much and won't scratch up furnitures... I'm totally cool with black cats too.

GAF will crucify me, but there are declawed kitties who need homes. Don't declaw one yourself, but there's nothing wrong with adopting an older kitty with no claws in my book.

As for hair...carpet is actually better because it's easier to vacuum. My hardwood floors basically make it so I have cat hair tumbleweeds if I don't keep up my cleaning. You get used to it.

Black cats are my favorite. My sweetest cats have been black cats. And they're rather regal and sleek looking. They're hard to take pictures of, but I manage to get some good photos of Soot through line camera filtering techniques lol

Regular brushings and vacuuming will cut down on hair, and there's all sorts of things you can do to curb scratching (citrus spray, double-sided tape, draping a towel over prime scratching areas) beyond just giving them lots of scratching posts.

Hell, you could adopt a cat that has been declawed (which is a barbaric practice you should never ever ever do to an animal, but if it's already been done they're still in need a good home).

The worst part of having a cat is scooping litter boxes, in my opinion. Well, that, and our black cat meows at the side of the bed until I roll over and give her room to snuggle.

Not at all, you're giving good advice! Animals that have been declawed are in special need of adoption, as they have no defenses to fight off all the other animals they have to share space with.

I've known of the bias against black cats for a while, and I love black cats, so I planned to adopt a black cat after my old black cat died.

But I ended up with a black/brown calico instead. I don't know if she counts, but she was the longest stay at the shelter at the time I looked, I guess because people have no taste.

The best thing about black cats is how pretty their eyes are when they get curious or playful.

Haha I've just seen GAF wage that particular war. My Booster is completely declawed (which is truly abominable--my vet was shocked that any licensed vet would do that to a cat) and was in bad shape because the family that found him kept him outside until I came to adopt him. Declawed kitties need extra love and care, and if my Boost is any example, they're extra loyal and loving in return.

Wut... is this superstition crap really still a thing? What is this, the middle ages?

I have a black cat. Had her since 2007. Her name is Arya. She is beyond adorable, and she doesn't like other humans much but she can be really cuddly with us.

Her as a kitten (yes, we still had CRT monitors back then xD):

More recent pics:

In islamic nations black cats are thought to possibly be djinns in desguise. So that's another stupid thing against these beautiful felines.
I refuse to believe this is true. That's an urban legend right?

Nope.
Unless they are time travellers from the Middle Ages where their ignorance could be excused.

Go hug your pet GAF
No thank you, I prefer my flesh to remain attached to my skin. And not in ribbons.

I'd say cleaning up vomit is right up there, too.

And so as to not make this post completely redundant:

Spooky in her favourite spot. Always fun to lightly touch the blanket and wait for the muffled "reowr".

Spooky under our her nanna blanket.

I am forever on team black cat. I've had two (still have the one), and they're just full of personality. Plus goddamn I've never met a cat with softer fur than this bugger:

His name is Coal :3

My friend has a black cat and it is unbelievably high strung.

It's alright with me since I met it as a kitten, but it'll hide and quake from any strangers approaching.

Oh yeah, I have at least two friends who have black cats (one has one male, my other friend has two females). I seriously never heard of black cats being less popular or anything about old superstitions still existing until this thread. Baffles me.

Yeah, I've seen it too, but you're advocating taking in declawed cats who need homes, not the actual declawing. I don't know how anyone could say you're in the wrong.

I'd say cleaning up vomit is right up there, too.

Switch to hairball control food, there'll be less puke. There's nothing you can do about the litter boxes, cats gotta eat and shit, but the vomit is just one of those little surprises every now and then.

It is true that people don't want black cats it is weird there just like every cat. I see lots of stories people neglecting black cats at shelters or even kittens and all they need is love, there just as cute.

It's not hairballs though, it's purely overeating. Little bastards sometimes just gorge until they can't gorge no more. The other day most of the food hadn't even been broken up, was still whole.

It's just a thing, and I can tolerate it :) Small price to pay.

I want to get another cat, and if I do it will be a black cat. I'm just worried about my current cat. When I adopted her, it specifically said that she didn't get along with other animals.

I've adhered to that recommendation, but I think she needs a friend/partner. The thing that's holding me back from going to the shelter is the idea that the warning sign is right and I would have to take my newly adopted baby back. Just the thought makes me adverse to the whole thing.

But if I do, it's going to be a black kitty!

I don't mind the scooping, but my cats just spread the litter like crazy. I'm switching to wood pellets for that reason, should spread less and even if it does it's not as annoying.

Probably not a reason that black cats are neglected but one thing I noticed immediately after getting mine is I have to be super careful when walking around at night. She likes to sit out in the open and, although part of her neck and stomach are white, none of that is visible when she's laying on her stomach. Might be something that influences my decision next time I adopt a cat. At least want some kind of pattern on the back or face even if it's a small white spot.

I stepped on my black cat's tail once at night. Felt terrible about it but I think she knew it was an accident.

Tuxedo cats are my favorite breed, I want to own one sometime in the future. I wonder if they also have problems being adopted since they are mostly black but I guess that'll make it easier for me to find a new buddy. :)

The first pet I ever had when I was four was a jet black cat who followed my mom and I home from the school bus stop one day when I came home from kindergarten. This is a photo of him a couple years after that (wooo, 1985!). He's the reason I am a cat person despite both of my parents being dog people.

After he passed from hepatitis in my sophomore year of high school, I didn't get another cat until adulthood. When I went to the local SPCA, they actually didn't have any black cats. Turned out there had been a huge rush of people looking for black cats around that time. I ended up with wonderful Tortie with White who I wouldn't have traded for any other black cat. She passed due to cancer earlier this year.

I keep tabs on the local SPCA to see what cats they have and black cats seem to go out for adoption really fast.

Get a bright color or glow-in-the-dark collar.

The missus' and my cat, Isaac, adopted us a couple of years ago. He's a fairly big cat compared to most (not overweight) and is a total boss, settled in pretty quickly with our lifestyles, and is a great member of the family.
