Nobuo Uematsu Best Soundtrack?

Really, it's like picking your favorite child. All of the Uematsu Final Fantasy soundtracks are at the very least good and several are excellent.

(Except maybe FFXIV, which I haven't heard enough of to judge.)

His work on other series is less appealing to me but even the scores I don't care much for (like Blue Dragon) have highlights.

Uematsu composed 8 tracks in Chrono Trigger: Silent Light, People Without Hope, Bike Chase, Underground Sewer, Primitive Mountain, Burn! Bobonga!, Tyran Castle, and Sealed Door. That's it (but certainly some nice tracks).

Never been a huge fan of him, but I liked his tracks on Front Mission: Gun Hazard (a late SFC platforming spin-off) a lot.

Best song from CT!

I'm not sure why people rate the Lost Odyssey soundtrack so highly. It's certainly a good solid soundtrack by Uematsu, but there isn't anything specifically that I remember from the game. FFVII on the other hand, I can remember a few.
There's plenty of stuff I remember from Lost Odyssey.

Also the main battle themes are so good that I didn't mind listening to them a million times during the game:

Chrono Trigger's OST wasn't much of a collaborative effort. It really was Mitsuda's work. Uematsu filled in to do 8 tracks when Mitsuda contracted stomach ulcers due to overwork. Uematsu did those based on notes left by Mitsuda and he doesn't even remember them anymore (which *might* explain why one of the tracks from FF9 coincidently sounds like Tyran Castle).

Of course, Mitsuda was unknown at the time so they touted Uematsu's name instead of his. TOSE even removed Mitsuda's name from the credits of the PS1 port.

Wow. Here I thought Chrono Trigger was all Mitsuda. Poor man, but that's sadly typical. Noriyuki Iwadare mentioned that the stress from doing Lunar 2's OST made half his hair gray. :(

Chrono Trigger sure rocketed Mitsuda into the top tiers of composers, an honor he definitely deserves. And that credit striking move in the PS1 port is just....WTF Bogus.

People also tend to forget that Noriko Matsueda stepped in to write the main boss theme.

FFVI on top, there's no question about it, I love pretty much every single track from it. Lost Odyssey is not far behind though, the several battle and boss themes were rad as hell.

toss up between VI and VII for me. Both are fantastic.

I hate how people love VIII and IX because i think they are both thoroughly terribad. There is one or two good songs in each but otherwise.

To me it's interesting to see the musical themes that go through Uematsu's work through his middle period

FFIII: The structures lend themselves very easily to a woodwind instrument with a simple accompaniment
FFIV: Playing with motifs (E.G.: the main theme is sprinkled everywhere)
FFV: Celtic/Late Renaissance
FFVI: Leitmotiv x 10. The whole thing is an opera.
FFVII/FFVIII: Sort of a hodge podge and delving into more 70s rock influences
FFIX: Almost all of it is very reminiscent of the vihuela repetoire of the 16th century. Some of it is a little uncanny how well it fits in

After that he sorta just went and abandoned a prominent musical theme and just did what he wanted.

Good post (although I'd argue that this happened both earlier and later).

Hence, IX is my favorite! And while I usually only talk about soundtracks separated from how they're used, I'd argue that IX is used the best in-game, too. He had so many good tracks that he could afford to blow stuff like Betting On This Sword on 1 scene.

Guess this is as good a thread as any to say that iTunes has downloads of all the big soundtracks for cheap prices. Haven't been on iTunes in months but don't recall all the classic soundtracks being on there for download. Secret of Mana(Kikuta, not Uematsu) is $7.99!!!! Steal! FFIV is that price too.

FFVI is 17.99. FFX is 24.99. Holy shit. Glad these are up on iTunes for awesome prices.

I'm partial to FFIV, FFVI,FFIX, The Last Story, and Lost Odyssey

FFIV - When I think of classic FF tracks I always instinctively think of the FFIV arrangements.

FFVI - Perfection

FFIX - I honestly didn't pay much attention to the score when I played it originally but now that I'm replaying it I absolutely adore it.

The Last Story- There is this raw immediacy to it that I just love. You don't get to hear much of the score since they seem to reuse the same tracks again and again(a problem I had with Xenoblade as well) but I personally find it to be a really underrated score.

Lost Odyssey- Probably my second favorite score from him. Just brilliant.
