Nobuo Uematsu: What's his greatest music?

Gonna have to agree that ff6 was probably his best. I still whistle some of the music from that game to this day. LO also has a great soundtrack though.

What a difficult question to answer, the man has inspired so many emotions and thoughts over the years with his many soundtracks. There is no wrong answer here, but the first one that pops into my head is his work with Final Fantasy VI with Final Fantasy IV being his very first work to WOW me.

The Serpent Trench is a particular favorite of mine.

No one ever talks about how awesome The Decisive Battle from Final Fantasy V is.

Dat percussion.

Yeah, I always thought that it was pretty awesome how the wove that theme into the game in older installments. Quite inspirational.

Despite the hate that FFV gets, I honestly think it has the best battle themes in the entire series. It has my favorite final boss battle theme in the entire series:

It might not be as "epic" as the other more well known ones, but this one makes it feel like an actual battle, which I love.

I always felt like FF6 was far and away his best work. It sounds so different from his other stuff, too, so sometimes I secretly wonder if he all wrote it himself. (._. )

I agree and have always wanted the whole thing re-arranged but it's very good.

My favourite single song is tough...maybe Compression of Time? Auron's Theme? Liberi Fatali? Advent One-Winged Angel (or do I like Orchestral more...)?

I think Compression of Time is my favourite. It's just...amazing. For some altogether unconnected reason, it also reminds of Majora's Mask's Song of Healing <3

No one ever talks about how awesome The Decisive Battle from Final Fantasy V is.

Whilst my favourite soundtracks from Uematsu are easily FFVIII & FFVI, I really enjoy some tunes from the earlier FFs too:

FFI - Chaos Temple (Original/Origins)
FFII - Castle Pandemonium (Original/Origins)

FFIV - World Map
FFIV - Boss Battle (<3 Culex)
FFIV - Dreadful Fight
FFIV - Zeromus

FFV - Ancient Library
FFV - Clash on the Big Bridge
FFV - Cursed Earths

I see your mediocre song and raise you one of his worst songs ever:

I'll be the first to admit I didn't like this song when I heard the whole FFVIII OST. The MIDI just doesn't work. However, the song is awesome when played in a different context (especially 2:25 onwards!). It's easily one of my favourite Black Mages songs.

Oh, I can't say no to the Brawl theme, either.

Not this thread again. T_T

There are so many answers I don't even know where to begin. I'll have to think long and hard before I return to this thread.

and that's exactly why I say this, threads like this automatically interest me, but then when it comes to posting my favorite music it becomes such an arduous trial to do so. Having said all this, i'll do what I usually do after saying all this, in threads like this, as I do, and post one (1) random song that is not necessarily my favorite but adds to the topic in some sort of way!

BOOM

It started with this, a true classic.

FF1 Prelude

Really love the vibe I get from this one.

FF7 Jenova's Theme

One of the best, if not best, normal boss music in the FF series.

FF7 Boss Theme

My favorite random battle song.

FF7 Battle Theme

Possibly my favorite song in the FF series.

One Winged Angel

There's a lot more i'm forgetting right now, but these are some of the ones I like a lot.
I was surprised to find out a lot of FFXI's music wasn't by him though.

I would say that Lost Odyssey has some of the best music of what I would call Uematsu's mature stage as a composer.

Especially Roar of the Departed Souls.

That piece is holy shit awesome.

I agree. The live performances of the Lost Odyssey music are a real treat:

I'm also partial to FFVII Opening and Mako Reactor:

Both pieces did an excellent job of setting the tone for the rest of the game.

So much of it is good. Uematsu's music is like porn or wikipedia. You listen to one piece and bam you've started listening to 10 tracks. He's just very damn good. A lot of the music can stand by itself.

Personally I enjoyed these the most overall:
FF6
FF7
Lost Odyssey

But lots of great tracks in his other scores.

World map theme orchestra, FF7. Too good.

As for a battle theme. The extreme FF8

Simply perfect balance of a calmed, classic tune inbetween with synthetized music style.

And as a bonus for genuine thematic music:

Hate to be that guy, but Selbina's music was Naoshi Mizuta. Nobuo only wrote a few songs for ff11 (the intros I think?)

I really wish there was a remix or orchestrated version of this song, it's one of my faves. Esp love how it was reused in that underground castle.

Final Fantasy VI, as a collective work, is his magnum opus. His later work varies in quality. For example, while Final Fantasy VII may contain genius work like the Main Theme, it also contains crap like this and this. And the inspired/uninspired ratio just gets worse as we progress through the series.

You can pull some good tracks from VIII and IX, too. But, as a whole, those soundtracks are not nearly as unified thematically and artistically as VI is.

I think he definitely rebounded with XIV, though. Especially when I heard Twilight over Thanalan. Really amazing.

YOU THINK HONEYBEE INN IS CRAP?!?!

Here is where the lights go off and you wake up feeling VIOLATED

Don't Be Afraid/Force Your Way take wicked shits on the battle music in FFVI.

Continue to scare the crap out of me even today.

FF7's "anxiety" themes are really amazing. On That Day, Anxious Heart, Who Am I, Forested Temple, Cid's Theme, Northern Crater, etc.
it's why the game has aged so well. Good graphics aren't even needed because the music is so immersive in that whole world.
