Hard to believe considering this has an extra lens and ois, which the 808 does not. So if this is true, Nokia screwed up the software big time.

From the samples it looks like the phone is using the same terrible post processing that the lumia 920 uses. It really messes up the pictures.

I dunno guys, looking at the pictures from my iPad gen 4 they aren't really that impressive. Sure it's alot better than Samsung G S4 but its still far away from my previous point and shoot camera Canon G12

Of course its not better than your point and shoot, its a phone with a camera for god sakes. This shits all over current phones in terms of picture quality, it is actually insane that they could pack all this stuff into such a small interior.

I'll wait to see the camera blogs say.

having a different OS has nothing to do with being let down by the pictures., but yes, they look great for a phone... and thats the goal, but i, like tino, think the 808 looks better. I was expecting some more rival quality with a P&S, but i am still impressed to how well they pacakged the lens' and slimmed down the hump. I would have absolutely no problem carrying something like that around (as opposed to the 808, which I would never buy and use as a phone)... i applaud nokia for making the first phone with a fantastic camera that I would actually want to use

Dat thickness...can't see anyone walking with one of these in their pockets.

It's like they tried to tack a phone onto a camera rather than the opposite.

It's impressive for what it is, but it's also impractical.

Edit:oh wait nevermind, it's just an accsssory. My bad.

Why is the camera hump so big? I mean... the actual optics are off to the right... is there a reason for all that volume to the left of it?

It's a big sensor. Plus the xenon flash and led flash is over there. Plus they probably wanted it to look even.

Exactly. A sharp hump IMO is terrible. You have to have the hump for the features, spend your time designing a way to minimize both the look and size of the actual hump.

Sample shots...pretty big, so not posting all:

Let's start a GAF fund so we can buy this lady new sandals. At least a new right sandal.

The sensor is surely directly behind the optics? You can put the flashes anywhere. It still doesn't explain the volume to the left.

I don't really know what you mean by "volume to the left". The lens is in the middle of the circle in the middle of the phone. The flash is to the left on my Lumia 920, too.

it would look worse if they had a tiny raised sensor. the size of the bump is also a marketing point, it a design that gives the appearance of awesome. it says to consumers "look at DAT CAMERA BUMP, THIS SHIT TAKES GREAT FUCKING PICTURES!!!"

So 1020 is not as awesome as the galaxy camera. Samsung wins again.

Maybe Nokia should just raise whatever part needs to be raised only and leave it at whatever awkward shape it produces. At least pazuzu will be happy.

Doubt Samsung is better but even if, Who the hell wants to use the Samsung camera as a phone? No one.

Quite a few people I know are looking forward to the Samsung Zoom; they think its an awesome idea.

Nokia basically killed itself when they took in Windows.
Im not impressed with the pictures on 1020; even when their viewed smaller their full of weird graininess (dots).

Only Sony can save us Android fans now. :)

The Lumia 1020 vs. Honami will be quite interesting in the camera department. Same size sensor, but Honamis sensor will be a Jr. version of the one Sony is using on the new RX100 II meaning it is a BSI sensor. That alone should help it quite a bit for low light shots. Factor in the BIONZ processor, new JPEG compression algorithm, the G-lens, the image stabilization (unknown if it's digital or optical) and quite likely also having xenon and LED flash, and I think these two phones will be by far the leaders in the camera phone world.

As a phone though, Honami should obliterate this... OS preferences aside.

I must say I do like the grip accessory they've got going on with this phone.

How so? The 920 has won multiple design and function awards.

Well of course all we know about Honami are rumors from insiders, but it seems to be the overall more advanced device when we drop the cameras out of the battle:

Lumia 1020 vs. Honami

SCREEN 4.5" 1280x768 AMOLED vs. 5" 1920x1080 LCD - If Honamis screen is anything like the Z Ultra, the image quality should be class leading. I suppose we'll have to wait for more direct comparisons
RAM The same at 2 GB
PROCESSOR Dual Core Snapdragn S4 at 1.5 GHz vs. Quad core Snapdragon 800 at 2.3 GHz - Sure the different OS's make a difference in how they perform, but Honami will have the latest and greatest running under its hood
GRAPHICSAdreno 225 vs. Adreno 330
INTERNAL STORAGE32/64 GB internal memory vs. 16/32? GB internal memory - No one seems sure how much storage Honami will have but this is the best guess based on other Sony phones
EXTERNAL STORAGENo expandable memory vs. Micro SD up to 64 GB
BATTERYNon-Removable 2000 mAh battery vs. Non-Removable 3000 mAh battery - Again, the OS will make a difference here. Either way, Honami will have the battery capacity of the 1020 AND its optional grip combined.
RUGGEDNESSNo elemental resistance vs. Waterproof, Dustproof (IP55/58) and Shockproof
CLOUD STORAGE7GB free on SkyDrive vs. 50GB free on Box

Of course there's a lot more to a phone than just the hardware like the OS and the overall user experience. There is more to talk about for hardware and design, but I figured I'd just mention the stuff that the insiders seem more certain about. The cameras could be an entire comparison on their own, but best to leave that out until we get facts about Honamis camera to compare against the 1020.

It seems like Nokia can't get good camera algorithms on WP. Some shots look pretty bad at 100%

Yeah, still looks like a phone pic. Showed the pics to colleagues and all they laughed. "as bad as HTC or Sony, S4 makes better pictures" No idea if true but...
