Nokia WP8 Event |OT| “Not every smartphone needs to look like an iPhone"

I'll make a choice after the Apple announcement on the 12th, but at this point in time, it very much looks like Nokia has won me over and i'll go from my 4S to the 920.

I'll be going the 4 to this. The only problem is music management, since I'm on a Mac.

Yeah, that will take some adjusting i'd imagine.
Im on a Mac too, but I still use an iPod classic for music as i like to carry everything, so I dont think ive got too much to worry about.

So no one aside from Nokia and Microsoft employees has had actual hands on on the device yet. Either the hardware isn't ready or the software isn't and it's screwing their PR because no one can actually use the device themselves. Someone is screwing up here and preventing the other company from going full out disclosure. It seems like Microsoft may be responsible because they haven't unveiled everything and using the device will let you find new features, but it could be both of them screwing up in their own ways.

Just posted this article in the WP OT (since it's more general WP talk than stuff concerning the Nokia event) http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2012/09/where-oh-where-is-windows-phone-8/

Looks much, much better than the glossy versions, imo.

Thats pretty damn sexy. Its definitely between this and red, but im loving the matte finish here.

if the white was matte i'd be all over that one. WHY NOKIA WHY?!

edit: they're making a big fuss regarding being able to use your nails on the touchscreen but i can already do that on my samsung omnia 7. are my nails magic? am i magic?

I think I heard them say "ceramic backplate" about the camera in the 920 in one of the vids. What does that mean? Will it not scratch as fast as the one on the 800/900? Or did I just hear it wrong?

They don't mean the plastic shell, though. It's the dark element around the camera. On older Lumia devices it had a chrome look, but the paint could be easily scratched off. Now it's a durable material that will keep it's color.

Yeah, that's what I meant. The chrome on my Lumia 800 is scratched pretty badly, and I still wonder who ever thought it was a good idea to put chrome on the spot where it usually lies.

That looks amazing, way better than the condiment-colored glossy stuff they've been shoving down our throats. Honestly, I like everything I've seen about this phone. Love, even. Problem is, I have an iPhone 4. It's old and sluggish, I'm out of contract, and I want a new phone NOW. Apple is going to announce their new phone and it'll be in my hands in a week or so... and they'll win by default. Again. I NEED price and launch details; I don't want to wait months after an announcement for something when the leader in the space has shown time and time again we don't need to. At least issue a press release after Apple's conference to tell people like me there's an alternative if you can hold out a little longer. Do something. It's so frustrating!

I never got this sentiment. We're not talking about Android phones here, the Lumia and iPhone couldn't be more different. Whatever makes the iPhone so appealing to you, the Lumia won't have it and vice versa. If you really want the 920, you can wait until November. Price is going to be similar or lower. I don't see how an iPhone that's coming out earlier, is going to change that.

If you love it, why can't you wait for 2 months or 3? Just buy the iPhone for the sake of it? I will never get this.

November 2nd seems to be the date. Less than 2 months!

Price: 30% cheaper than the iPhone 5.
Availability: late October/early November?

I'm trying, but using my iPhone 4 is agonizing right now. Seriously. I don't know how much longer I can put up with it. That's the main issue.

I hope you guys are right, but for me that's an awfully long wait.

I'm pretty locked in on the Surface (which is another thing that was announced foolishly) so I may just get my fix on that end.

You could always buy a Galaxy S3 that is available right now in your nearest store, it will still be a huge leap forwarx from you iPhone 4

I have an iPhone 4 as well. Bought September 2010 and contract ends tomorrow. I plan to get a new phone as well but how exactly is the iPhone 4 old and sluggish?

It's simple

Get iPhone5 with on contract price $200 16GB $300 32GB
Sell iPhone5 on eBay $650+
Get Lumia 920 for off contract price $???($450-$650)

Love the screen, hate everything else. Not a fan of constant babysitting and tinkering in the mobile space (though I love it on desktops!).

Thousands of songs, hundreds of apps, less than a gig of free space = a stuttery, buggy mess of a phone. Have tried restores, it's just built up with cruft that won't go away at this point and not very fun to use. Mine is a bit older than yours too. Almost all of the zip that was there for 18 months or so is gone. Had the exact same experience with the 3G.

Actually not a bad plan! Bit more effort than I'm used to as far as this type of thing goes (for example I'm selling my 4 to Gazelle as opposed to eBay where I could get double given it's sim unlocked), but not bad at all.

This sounds bizarre to me. How can a smartphone, if you say Apple is as good as it is, be agonizing to keep hold of?

I mean, I would like to update my HTC Trophy, but it works spledidly. The phone isn't laggy, and performs all the daily tasks I need. If I had no slowdown on the phone for IMs, browsing, etc, the new hardware upgrade should only be for new perks and maybe better hardware (camera, screen). No need to 'agonize' over it.

I had a samsung Omnia that I agonized for an upgrade after 4 months. My Trophy upgrade this winter will only be because I want to develop apps and because my screen is cracked (though still fully functional).

EDIT: Ahh, it's stuttory/buggy. Maybe you should not buy Apple anymore and switch to WP. Our updates [disclosure, work on WP] seem to make our devices faster :)

I just hope T-Mobile doesn't get shafted with the 820, but it's looking likely. And I'd have no problem buying it unlocked/international, except in very rare circumstances do those variants support AWS bands ;___;

I never said anything about Apple being good, I said they were the market leader and release their products soon after their announcements! I'm a PC guy through and through to be quite honest! I've enjoyed the majority of time I've spent in the iPhone ecosystem, but I'm out of contract, not super-excited for the iPhone 5 (which has seemingly completely leaked at this point), and seriously considering alternatives. It may sound crazy that I can't wait a few months for a Lumia, and I haven't decided one way or the other yet, but I'm at the point where I'm beyond ready NOW.
That wait is going to kill the hype.
Exactly. I mean, just look at the exchange happening in this thread.

That's how I did the iPhone4. I sold it on ebay before the announced the 4s got a good chunk of change for it. WP7.5 won me over with the focus and i was disappointed in the advancements of the 4s over the 4. I just decided to pocket the money.

I just flip technology thats how I stay with the latest.

Well, at least we know the tech works. It's a shame the sensor is the same or not much better than the competition though.

edit:looking at the full gallery, it's a shame that there's still so much noise in the night photos. Seems like you really do need a steady hand even with the IS tech.
