Nokia WP8 Event |OT| “Not every smartphone needs to look like an iPhone"

I was already leaning Lumia but nothing that Apple did today really stuck out so I guess I just got a confirmation on my future purchase.

Yeah, I'm pretty much the same way I reckon. I just need to make sure the battery life is better than the Lumia 800, which is frustratingly poor.

Okay, so it's going to be the 920 for sure.

Just hope it'll be available on O2, otherwise I'll just have to cold x it unlocked.

I'll check out the EE thing too and see if that's worth it.

What are Everything Everywhere likely to be like? Will there definitely be a large premium on 4G devices like the 920?

Another ex-iPhone user seeking a port in the storm of underwhelming news. :(

"4G will launch in 16 major UK cities by the end of the year, covering about 33% of the UK population"

I don't get what's happening though, really. So EE are Orange and T-Mobile, and they're renaming the merged company? So if I get a 920 on EE will I get Orange Wednesdays? Or will Orange and T-Mobile continue to be separate entities?

Ideally I'd like to not pay any more for my phone per month than I currently do for my iPhone. Double-ideally I'd like to get it on O2, I wonder how long the exclusivity window is.

The only thing holding me back from a 920 is the lack of SD Card.
I don't own an MP3 player and want to have a large collection of music on my next phone. 32GB just won't be enough :(

Well, if you have Xbox Music you can just stream what you don't put on the phone.

Yeah pretty nonplussed by the iPhone, im going to wait for reviews. on the cameras mainly

Nokia and MS' biggest problem is launching a month too late. Which I guess is a huge step up from where they were last year.

What about cloud/streaming? I know it depends on the carrier and data plan, but it's an option. I don't have any music on my phone right know because of Spotify.

Nobody really knows about Orange Wednesdays etc.

Their site says they will have 4G specific plans, though, which would indicate there will be a premium over standard plans.

Hmm, I wonder if that means there'll be a non-LTE 920 plan. I somehow doubt it but I'd like to avoid the premium if possible.

After the ip5 announcement, i'm leaning toward the Lumia. I currently use a 4 as my daily driver. I never thought I'd be considering a Nokia over an iPhone.

Seems like there are quite a few converts from the Haus of Jobs.

Not that I expect that to extend beyond the Internet, tbh

I was on the fence between this and the iPhone 5, deciding which would be my first smart phone, but after seeing the Apple event, I'm going with this.

The camera technology looks to be clearly better, the screen is better, I like the design more, and there are other factors. I have a Macbook Air right now, but plan on returning it (2nd defective unit I got in a row) and buying a new PC laptop or build a gaming PC for the first time ever, and either way I'm putting Windows 8 on it, so it'll be nice to have integration with WP8.

I cant believe this but nokia has created the most innovative phone of the year. They have my money.

After seeing the tall 4S, it's time to go all the way back.

To Nokia.

After 4 years with an iPhone, the Lumia 920 it is. I'm nervous. I've been entwined in Apples web of proprietary shit for so long I'm not sure how I'm gonna break free.

Thank god Microsoft made an app for Mac. Will ease the transition.

Edit. Lol at the nano looking like a Lumia.

Not impressed with new iPhone. I wouldn't have believed it, if I said it 3 months ago, but it is true. I'm buying a Nokia phone.

That red lumia looks so good. If wp8 succeeds in gaining traction in a big way, i will greatly consider the lumia.

Clearly the competition has caught with apple. Had every iPhone since the 3G but now I’m considering switching to the Lumina or the S3.

Haha I'm following all the sheeple here and I'm also considering the new Nokia, it's just too good.
Has a lot of innovative features, but I wish it would come out earlier... Also I have to read a review before it comes out. And the lack of instagram is quite sad.

Yeah was thinking about either this or Spotify. Think I'll give Xbox music (I'm guessing this is what used to be called Zune?) a go and see how well that works.

Not having Instagram would have been one of the few things Id miss if I end up moving to a Windows Phone next. Glad to hear its in the works...

If Microsoft and Nokia has any chances to grab attention, it's pretty much this period of time...

Probably watch them screw it up instead though. :/

I can't really see it not happening though. It should already be a reality, but hopefully its not too far off in the future.

I actually like Balmer, or at least I used to. DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS Balmer had some damn charisma!

Seems to be November in EU and USA. Some shops have the 920 for 600€
Retail dates indicate an early November release in key markets (North America, UK, Germany, France, etc.) and a week or two later in smaller European countries like Scandinavia and stuff.

Okay, I've decided to get the 820 or 920 next year. I'll have to buy it and unlock it from Rogers/Telus, so how would it work updates-wise? Would I be waiting for Rogers/Telus to allow the update despite me not using their services or would I never get the update?

No wait, there will be an option to bypass the carrier release and update your phone day 1. Microsoft says that it's for "enthusiasts."

Actually Paul Therrot is saying that a Music tagged category for Skydive folders is imminent.

Think Google Music, and cloud streaming via Skydive. Likely be before WP8 launch soon :)

That sounds damn good.

Being on Android right now, loving iOS on my other devices (iTouch 2 and iPad 3)...well, I tend to like what I've seen of the new Lumias and WP8 more than what has been shown for the iPhone 5.

Could it be that...I'd buy a Nokia phone again (last one was a...3310 :p )?

Sure, it could be. Why not? It has the best hardware this Holiday season, sexy as hell too. If you like the OS then it's a no brainer.

Hope Nokia doesn't fuck this up with their exclusivity deals.

In the UK on EE there'll be the S3, the iPhone 5, and the Lumia 920. If the carrier through ads and salespeople doesn't want to push the Lumia, it's not going to get get sold.

can someone make a war-thread?

I feel comparing the flagship phones of each OS without shitting on the iPhone 5 thread. The iPhone 5 conference made me more hyped for 920 than the 920 conference

I'm interested in this device now. I just switched from 4S to S3 and prefer Android. IOS just seems a bit archaic now, but how does Windows OS compare to Android in features and speed?

Also, how does the camera, DAC and apps compare from the L920 to the S3?

Heard someone say the S3's screen is mediocre earlier, which boggles the mind as I think it's absolutely amazing. Pentile is just a dumb thing that's been overblown. I can't see any pixels and the black levels in this thing compared to my 4S, insane.

Change your avatar into a Blackberry or WebOS logo and everyone will calm down.

Apps: 100.000k apps in the windows phone store. some are missing, but the most important stuff can be found. But not at the same level as iOS or Android

Screen: apparently lumia 920 has the screen with the highest DPI, best sunlight readability, highest refresh rate. so i imnagine it is one of the best screens .

Camera: According to Nokia this will be the best camera for videos because it uses modern image stabilization sensors. Which also help to get much more light in at dark locations. So it could become the best phone camera

Speed: Even 2010 launch single core windows phone 7 devices run smoother than any android phone pre-project butter. The OS is fast and effective and beautiful.

Features: Windows Phone is about integration. Everything somehow connects, for example in windows phone 8 developers can integrate their "lenses" directly into the camera app. for example a retro-filter from a third party app can be directly accessed in the camera.
Or your people hub integrates facebook and twitter etc and you can directly upload stuff, synch contacts etc.

and then the lumia 920 has all the current stuff like NFC, wireless charging etc. This will probably be my next phone <3
