Nomura Interview on FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII [Development Clarification]

You people sure do get hung up on the most trivial aspect of games. Funny how I hardly ever hear discussions on issues of gameplay mechanics amid the tumult of Square-Enix internet discussions. It is always character model this, voice acting that, belts this, emo kids that.

If I was a SE employee I'd count my blessing for the language barrier filtering the blunt of such rubbish away from my ears. That is, of course, unless the Japanese fans are equally insufferable.

By the by, how about that battle system in FFXII and XIII, amazing stuff, eh? A fresh change of pace from ye old Dragon Quest template "Fight/Magic/Item/Run" chestnut, wouldn't you say? Well, I certainly would.

No, Vaan isn't as bad as any of the FFX or FFX-2 characters at all. Also Yoshida's original design has nothing to do with the CG abomination.

Is pretty damn decent and well designed young thief.

Fucking terrible.

Not seeing much difference there aside from the mediums.

Then again I never had any particular issues w/ Vaan's design.

I see your point, but what do you expect when Nomura is the subject?

Also I found The Last Remnant better than both(and its design is more like a pure evolution of the JRPG than anything else). FFXII would have been cooler if it was FFXI's combat system with gambits and 6-12 sized parties.

At many places:

alpha = feature complete
beta = first build with zero open bugs in database
I've been in some projects where the time between Alpha and Beta is like a few days. And if I recall, Assassin's Creed 2 pretty much didn't have any time between Alpha and Beta.

Actually, there was an entire thread talking about how gameplay is a meaningless word.

I'm not sure how you got the idea that the Japanese fans were somehow any more sane or less petty than anyone else. Just this cursory discussion conjures up all those things I've read about people with $5000+ worth of collectibles for a game series and then when an unpopular decision is made in the series they take a scissors to their whole room, game discs included, and then post it on 2chan.

Never said the Japanese were better, just that I do not know any better because of the language barrier. I am sure fan behaviour is a part of human nature and a constant across all cultures.

Wow, 6 to 12 sounds a bit chaotic, especially since in boss encounters I constantly found myself having to micromanage the character actions instead of relying on the gambit scripts that I wrote for them.

Vaan really is the worst.
He stopped bothering me once the plot actually started (i.e. once you got Ashe). The real main character in the game was Basch anyways, Vaan was just there for plot exposition.

When you think about it, Vaan really had very little to do with the game's plot other than his actual presence.

Yoshida brought us Vaan...easily the worst designed FF character in the history of the series...
He brought us Balthier...easily the best designed FF character in the history of the series. Or any game period.
