Nomura wanted to turn Versus into a musical!?

This is when he revealed to us that he was so moved by Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway’s lyrical take on Victor Hugo's novel, that he charged into the Square offices the next morning intent on transforming FFXV into a musical of Les Miserables’s caliber.
I would love to know how his team reacted to that.

Maybe it's just the musical theatre actor in me, but I kind of want to see this happen.

Make it DLC, Nomura! Do it!

Going beyond the writing.

Going beyond the challenges composing for the voice brings.

Square Enix usually doesn't hire top level talent to voice the Final Fantasy series, do they? Now imagine their choices for musical talent...

That's... innovative at least?

Epic Mickey 2 was a musical or had musical elements. But a full scale, multi-hour RPG? Whoo, sweet Jesus. Nobody could stand that for more than an hour.

He should have as little game design input as possible i think, bad enough he has so much when it comes to character design. -__-
His growing creative influence & design input is the best thing to happen to Square Enix. You absolutely know nothing of him or his work at Square Enix when muttering such ignorant words.

I'm pretty sure Nomura was joking, especially since it was just a few months ago.

As absurd as this idea might sound, I actually love it.

I don't necessarily know if it would work for FFXV, seeing as I've yet to play the game, but I definitely would like to play a video game opera. Hire an actual opera composer, librettist, and singers, have the music adapt to the events in the game (something akin to the narration in Bastion), and design the game specifically in such a way that, for example, battles could sensibly play out with songs as well (arias, duets, and ensembles), and I'd be in for it day one. A $60 entry fee is significantly less than actual tickets to a show.

Nomura is trolling GAF while he's at E3, and has a translator.

I really want to see this done.

God that would be hilarious, I can see it now:

Dude.

I'd be fine with this. At least it'd be something no one's ever really tried to do.

Maybe not for FFXV at least, after all that waiting it surely would have pissed some people off.

Is he saying he wanted to turn the game into a musical, or that he wanted to make a musical based on the game?

We sat down with Nomura at this year’s E3 for a solid hour and talked about all things FFXV, Kingdom Hearts III, and life. This is when he revealed to us that he was so moved by Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway’s lyrical take on Victor Hugo's novel, that he charged into the Square offices the next morning intent on transforming FFXV into a musical of Les Miserables’s caliber.

Nomura pls.

This was Kitase's expression when Nomura told him this:

I like this idea. Developers need to try ripping off other forms of media, rather than turning every game into a Michael Bay movie.

Okay, I really want someone to make a game that's a musical now.

EDIT: I mean a game that is a musical. A game that contains musical numbers within it. You get to, I dunno, control the singing and dancing of your character or something.

Supposedly Nomura watched Les Miserables and wanted to turn Versus into a musical. So glad it didn't happen. But I think he should make a whole opera show in Final Fantasy XV game, in a building you can visit, based in a town or city. You can go inside, pay the tickets and watch Nomura's opera! That would be glorious.

Nomura seems to watch a lot of movies, looks like another thing he has in common with Kojima.

Close if old.

Man, how cool would that have been?!

Did he mean he wanted to turn the game from an RPG into a musical or a musical based off the game? Pretty sure one exists for Persona 4 and Bleach of all things, so the latter would be kind of likely to happen...

That sounds like it would've been amazing. Not sure how well it'd work of people's length expectations of an AAA title, but I hope he gets to work an hour or two segment into something someday.

Shame, I would love to see a full blown video game musical. As long as the player doesn't have to sing then I welcome the first developer to have the balls to make such a game.

Y'know what, I would be totally ok with this. A high-brow, bleeding-edge, massive dark RPG that's also a dramatic musical? Sounds so ridiculous and wacky that it would have been awesome.

Honestly, get the music team from Kingdom Hearts and Utada Hikaru on it and I'd be down. Maybe not for a mainline Final Fantasy but I'd be down.

Which is exactly why FF is on a critical and creative decline right? your desire to supplant reality with your delusions are admirable. I and many others stopped caring for Final fantasy where fashion became more important than actual character development and story, i have no doubt he had a straight face when he made those comments.

Wouldn't work. Your average musical is simply playing it much too seriously for the levels of schmaltz in Final Fantasy's writing.

And suddenly it becomes clear why it took half a decade to be in a state that makes a somewhat finished impression.
