My family back in Malaysia are pretty big Christians so this makes me pretty sad.
Now that I think about it Malaysia is pretty fucked up. Malays get so many advantages from the government while the Chinese get screwed over, i'm glad my parents left there.

that's the clearest form of propaganda I've ever seen. Even communist Russia ain't got shit on that!
A professor of mine always said it's best to refer to these kind of bombings with "Jihadi terrorists" instead of "Islamist terrorists", because that way you prevent putting the blame on the people who're most likely the victim of these attacks. I agree.

However, I don't think it's "the clearest form of propaganda" to call it an Islamist attack. More like ignorance and a lack of political correctness. After all, these terrorists justify their actions with a distorted or radical Islam reading, and they're part of the fundamentalist political Islam: islamism.

I prefer Jihadi terrorism though, it just better defines the borders of who the terrorists really are.

Mohammed didn't ban non-Muslims from saying "Allah".
It's always funny to see how extremists are so ignorant of their own religions, or of much common sense (ban the only word for god, yay! :| ).

Edit: scratch that, they aren't ignorant, they're just corrupt people spreading lies to corrupt the other members of their faith, especially those that are less active and therefore more ignorant to what is truly their religion or not, to achieve their own means. They just want to stir up shit so they can get an excuse for everyone to go to war, and get the non-extremists to ally with them (Venezuela's dictator's tactic. Keep reminding the people of the impending US invasion to rile them up and keep em in control!).

But the Malaysian government says "Allah" is exclusive to Islam and its use by others would mislead Muslims and tempt them to convert to Christianity.

Oh the humanity, we can't have that now can we...

You had it right the first time. They are just plain ignorant.

This just in: the Arabic language is now apparently exclusive to Islam.

Exactly! My god people grow up. The actually word "Allah" isn't even the name of your god.

Doesn't just mean one god?

It means The God. and the Biblical Aramaic use the same word. ܐܰܠܳܗܳܐ ʼAlâhâ

it's the same. the same.the same.

Still a few hundred years to go (optimistically) to catch up with Christianity. Sad that these extremists continue to reinforce stereotypes for the rest of Muslims.

Ho-hum. Love that religion of peace.

I predict 'anti-islamic extremist' will be a buzzword in five years and the bombs will be flying in both directions. I'm moving to a little atheist village at the top of a mountain.

I will join you, gladly.

No.fucking.words.

Rednecks of the Muslim world. Hopefully people have finally realized this.

It really seems more and more obvious that decent Islamists are the actual minority.

What do you mean Bibical Aramaic uses the same word?

Don't worry. The countries who practice this sort of Islam are just being dragged kicking and screaming with the rest of the secular world like Christianity was over the past couple hundred years. Hopefully if they want to thrive in a global market or get help they will lighten up.

That's funny last summer a cab driver that drove me to the airport from Kuala Lumpur complained all the way that Chinese and Indian people got all the advantages, and that the government should do more for Malays.

Beautiful country if you visit it as a tourist but it wouldn't want to live there. I'm mean they even have some special police unit that checks if Muslim kids try to go clubbing.

This just in, because it's Islam related, another idiot thinks the actions of few somehow represent those of many!

No issue at all with non-Muslims using the word "Allah", which is literally Arabic for God anyway. It certainly is not un-Islamic in any way shape or form. Just a few rotten Apples (probably poor ignorant folk) spoiling it for the masses again. You know, as occurs in all religions, groups and non groups alike.

The.Government.of.Malaysia.

I'm a Christian from Iraq, and we always refer to God as Allah. It's just the Arabic word for God, it's not exclusive to any religion. Every Arab Christian I know uses it.

Yeah but the original writings didn't use the Allah word in the Bible did it?

Jewish guy explains the word Allah http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65zyICBKBPI and how jews still use it today.

pretty unfair reaction from GAF(or joke?)

-Most Muslims/organizations in the country thought the ruling was cool

-few bandits on motorcycles fire bomb 3 Churches in the Capital, after the ruling

Its fucked up reaction to the ruling by a fucked up few, its nothing like the "Cartoon reaction".

I am not a Muslim and only know a little bit about the faith. So if I speak out of turn forgive me. Isn't one of the most basic tenets of the faith is enlightenment? Cause most of the followers i see in the news are not getting it.

Check out this website: www.christianitymeme.org . While it doesn't go into the specifics of Islam, it does a good job explaining how religions, using Christianity as an example, have different rules for dealing with in-group and out-group interactions.

Guess what: This is idolatry! These Muslims fail at their religion!

Allah is not a name, at least in the sense that "Bob" is a name. It is more like a term. It means "The God".. A term used specifically to de-personify God, because he is supposed to be everything. A name for god, like "Bob", tends to isolate him as an entity distinct from all that is... Better to have a name which implies a non-division from the universe. "The God", "The Everything", Allah.

Of course, repeat a term like "The God" over and over again, and the terminology of it becomes obscured.. It starts to sound like a name again. "Thegod". "Did you know that my lord Thegod could beat Jesus or Hercules in an arm wrestle? It's true!"

Muslims who treat Allah like the name of their personal god, denying its use by other monotheists, have turned the term for "all that is" into another lousy idol.. Its just their own personal trinket of a "lowercase g" god. Like a lucky rabbits foot. Make no mistake, Muhammad would have smashed this idol version of god just the same as any other idol. The correct "Allah" refers to everything for everyone.

It's a reference to a Malaysian tourist commercial that has shattered (at least) European eardrums for quite some time now. The slogan is Malaysia Truly Asia, and truth be said that jingle popped into my head the first time I read the thread title and every time Malaysia was mentioned.

This is one of the commercials:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-HahCHPX6w

Cheesier than a tanker full of camembert. I guess these commercials will continue to air for quite a long time.

pussy politicians, scared Muslims wont vote for them for that, which from my admittedly limited knowledge of Malays, wont be the cast

This happens when progress arrives in every country

No seriously, apart from FOX "News", I can hardly imagine any Western anti-muslim propaganda.

Oh, good, I've been waiting for another FOX jab on NeoGaf!

Do you even watch the channel? I do, and I never see any "anti-muslim propaganda" on it.

Anyway, this news story is crazy.

As a Muslim, I'll say that this is utter bullshit. Complete ignorance by the people who attacked the Christians. Being pissed off at others saying "Allah" is complete stupidity as Allah is just the name of God. You can call him The Almighty, The Everliving, and whatnot. It's just a translation and being pissed at it is beyond my acceptance level.

This is funny, actually, because Malaysians like to present themselves as being superior to Indonesians simply because their economy is more developed. The reality is quite different, however.

You cannot say that prohibiting Christians from using "Allah" is a minority opinion in the country, though the violence is clearly only supported by a small minority. The elected government of Malaysia made it illegal for Christians to use the word "Allah." It was a court decision that overruled the unconstitutional law, and the government is appealing this ruling. The Malaysian government has also banned Bibles from Indonesia because they use the word "Allah" for God.

In Malaysia, it is also illegal for a Muslim to change his/her religion. If you are born a Muslim, you will be subject to shariah law for the rest of your life, regardless of your actual faith (or lack of faith), which means that you are forbidden to change your religion. As you might suspect, however, non-Muslims are allowed to convert to Islam.

There is no compulsion in relgion.

Ergo the mandate to remain a Muslim is un-Islamic.

So when did we decide to abolish religion guys? Can we move it forward a couple of weeks, I need to take my car in for a service soon.
